Sony’s next-gen console comes out this November, and with it a ton of fantastic games coming both on launch as well as within a few months of the console’s release. The PS5<\/strong> finally had its big September reveal event, and with pricing and release date information, came a ton of new game announcements for the console’s near future. Alongside all of the new games came a much more surprising announcement, something probably no player was expecting: the PlayStation Plus Collection.<\/p>\n

At launch, several of the PS4’s biggest hits will be available to download and play instantly on the next-gen hardware. As an added “PlayStation Plus benefit” on the PS5<\/a>, some of the biggest first and third-party PS4 games will be free to all players. All that’s required is players have an active PlayStation Plus subscription, and then “simply download games and start playing.” Obviously this isn’t an overt competition with Xbox Game Pass, but it does at least allow players to clear some gaps in their gaming enjoyment from last generation. Here’s what’s been announced for the program, coming at launch on PS5:<\/p>\n

The beautiful reinvention of\u00a0PlayStation’s classic series makes its way to PS5.\u00a0God of War<\/em> (2018) transformed Kratos into a killing machine that was genuinely likeable, alongside his charming son Atreus. The two embark on a quest through Norse mythology that helped define the PS4’s success and the last console generation overall. Especially on the heels of\u00a0God of War<\/em>‘s sequel announcement for 2021<\/a>, players will want to revisit the adventure that started it all.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

A Soulsborne oft-missed by fans who didn’t have a PS4,\u00a0Bloodborne<\/em> marked a major shift forward for Souls-like games<\/a>. Many of the innovations made in\u00a0Bloodborne<\/em> carried on into several other successful titles like\u00a0Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice<\/em> and\u00a0Dark Souls 3<\/em>. Taking place in a distinct Victorian\/Lovecraftian universe, many were impressed by its highly unique world and properly challenging gameplay.<\/p>\n

Bringing the\u00a0Monster Hunter<\/em> series to next-gen<\/a>,\u00a0Monster Hunter: World<\/em> marked a proper return from the Capcom franchise that hadn’t released a new entry since\u00a0Monster Hunter 4<\/em> on Nintendo 3DS.\u00a0Hunters jumped into a completely modernized and highly detailed world, full of all sorts new and returning monsters to chase after. All of the signature depth of customization and progression is there in\u00a0Monster Hunter: World<\/em>, and makes its rightful return on PS5.<\/p>\n

Noctis’ long-awaited adventure makes its way to PS5<\/a> as well with\u00a0Final Fantasy 15<\/em>. The storied franchise’s long awaited entry marked a pretty significant change from previous games, eschewing the turn-based combat entirely for more action-oriented encounters. Players could also explore a fully open world, a first for\u00a0Final Fantasy<\/em>, throughout the majority of the game. While the multi-tiered media approach of\u00a0Final Fantasy 15<\/em> was controversial for some, it was still one of the more interesting stories in recent years from the franchise.<\/p>\n

Releasing after the powerhouse of\u00a0Skyrim<\/em>,\u00a0Fallout 4<\/em> was the first next-gen game from Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic adventure<\/a>. Players explored a retro-futuristic Boston after emerging from\u00a0several hundred years of cryogenic sleep inside Vault 111. Classic\u00a0Fallout<\/em> staples were bolstered by an all-new, fully voiced protagonist, alongside improved shooting mechanics and a unique base-building mechanic. While it wasn’t the most compelling\u00a0Fallout<\/em> stories, the game was still a blast to explore.<\/p>\n

For the fighting game fans out there,\u00a0Mortal Kombat X<\/em> makes its way onto PS5 as well. While it’s not the newest game in the series<\/a>,\u00a0Mortal Kombat X<\/em> was the next-gen entry for the series at the time, and brought along several gameplay additions. Character variations added competitive depth to all characters, and the game had an absolutely bonkers story on the level of\u00a0Fast and Furious<\/em>‘ insanity.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

Serving as the grand finale for Nathan Drake,\u00a0Uncharted 4<\/em>: A Thief’s End<\/em> ended the series with a huge blockbuster bang<\/a>. Many of the story innovations from\u00a0The Last of Us<\/em> served as inspiration for many of the character moments and story beats throughout\u00a0Uncharted 4<\/em>. The game felt just as good to play as it looked, as the graphical fidelity in\u00a0Uncharted 4<\/em> is some of Naughty Dog’s best work.<\/p>\n

As a proper reboot of another classic PlayStation franchise,\u00a0Ratchet & Clank<\/em>\u00a0put the series back on the map on PS4. The original game in the series was rebuilt from the ground up with modern visuals, but still felt familiar for veteran fans. While the animated film didn’t rollover so well, as with most video game movies,\u00a0Ratchet & Clank\u00a0<\/em>was received well enough to prompt a sequel with\u00a0Rift Apart<\/em> for PS5<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The PlayStation’s premier take on Zombies,\u00a0Days Gone<\/em>, also jumps on to the collection. Deacon explores the Pacific Northwest amongst the zombie apocalypse in a packed open world full of dangerous hordes of infected. While it might not be the most thrilling in terms of open world elements, the game truly shines in its tense moments of\u00a0World War Z<\/em>-like zombie groups attacking from all sides.<\/p>\n

Bringing the slasher-film horror aesthetic to games,\u00a0Until Dawn<\/em> was a campy and thrilling horror joyride<\/a> on PS4. Players attempt to survive a horror adventure through multiple perspectives, with each choice potentially being a character’s last. While it’s largely jump scares and tacky quick time events, that’s the point of\u00a0Until Dawn<\/em>‘s nature. The game never takes itself too seriously, and it’s better for it.<\/p>\n

In a similar vein to\u00a0Until Dawn<\/em>,\u00a0Detroit: Become Huma<\/em>n<\/em> is another story-driven narrative experience<\/a> making its way to PS5. Players explore a dystopian world from three different perspectives, each with their own story to tell in an android-driven futuristic society. The variety of characters in the game are generally interesting, even if the game largely follows Quantic Dream’s formula of detective-like experiences.<\/p>\n

One of the first major triple-A shooters to visit a World War One setting,\u00a0Battlefield 1<\/em> was one of the better recent entries in the series. While\u00a0Battlefield 5<\/em> suffered a lot of criticism and controversy<\/a>,\u00a0Battlefield 1<\/em> stepped into a new world of shooters with ease. The vignette-style story mode was more unique than previous\u00a0Battlefield<\/em> stories, while the multiplayer still had its signature appeal in large-scale armed conflicts.<\/p>\n

Kicking off the first of many major PlayStation exclusives,\u00a0Infamous Second Son<\/em> brought the open world superhero action to PS4 long before\u00a0Spider-Man<\/em> could. Players discovered a range of new and unique superpowers as they fought a militaristic government taking over Seattle. The particle effects and graphical enhancements displayed what the new generation of consoles was capable of, and was a solid representation of what was to come<\/a> in subsequent years.<\/p>\n

Rocksteady’s swan song of\u00a0Batman<\/em> games,\u00a0Arkham Knight<\/em>, also leaps on to the PS Plus Collection. The highly anticipated finale Batman’s struggle throughout the\u00a0Arkham<\/em> series culminated in a fight against Scarecrow and the\u00a0new character called the “Arkham Knight.” Alongside the beat em up gameplay of previous\u00a0Arkham\u00a0<\/em>games,\u00a0Arkham Knight<\/em> threw in additional mechanics<\/a> with the Batmobile and ramped up the gameplay even more.<\/p>\n

After what seemed like an eternity of development hell,\u00a0The Last Guardian<\/em> landed on PS4 in 2016. Team Ico’s follow-up to\u00a0Shadow of the Colossus<\/em> and\u00a0Ico<\/em>,\u00a0The Last Guardian<\/em> was a beautiful set piece adventure<\/a> that was whimsical and beautiful. The characterized beast Trico’s relationship with the boy grows in an endearing way that makes the adventure worthwhile, even when mired by some awkward controls.<\/p>\n

The tentpole PS3 exclusive that eventually became one of the most highly praised game of all time,\u00a0The Last of Us Remastered<\/em> comes to PS5 as part of the collection as well. Even on PS3 the game was graphically and narratively impressive, Joel and Ellie’s adventure continues to impress to this day. Even with\u00a0the divisive\u00a0The Last of Us Part Two<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0the original game still carries its emotional weight quite well.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

As the JRPG that reignited\u00a0Persona<\/em>‘s popularity in the west<\/a>,\u00a0Persona 5<\/em> returns on the PS5. While it’s a shame it’s not the superior\u00a0and expanded\u00a0Persona 5 Royal<\/em>, the base game is still fantastic. The 100-hour adventure is worth sinking plenty of time into, as players explore Tokyo under siege by the scum of society.<\/p>\n

Resident Evil<\/em>‘s renaissance all began with\u00a0Resident Evil 7<\/em>, a true departure from previous entries in the franchise. The game emulated a lot of what made games like\u00a0Outlast<\/em> and\u00a0Amnesia<\/em> horrifying, whilst also injecting the iconic tone from\u00a0Resident Evil<\/em> games. As PS5 gears up for\u00a0Resident Evil Village<\/em><\/a>, players will want to revisit Ethan Winter’s harrowing ordeal.<\/p>\n

This is a huge collection of free games for those with a PlayStation Plus subscription, ready as soon as players get their hands on PS5. Not to mention those who didn’t get a PS4 last generation, this is a massive deal for new adopters.<\/p>\n

The PlayStation Plus Collection will be available at launch on\u00a0PS5<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
