Initially, Nintendo&#8217;s innovative handheld console struggled to catch on like its Nintendo DS predecessor or the Wii, famously causing Nintendo to initiate a massive price cut mere months after launch. But as the years went by, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/3ds\/\">3DS<\/a> sales increased, and its library grew to be rather impressive. The Nintendo 3DS eventually became yet another hit handheld for the company, with support lasting nine years.<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, Nintendo has recently announced that the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-discontinues-3ds-handheld\/\">3DS has been discontinued<\/a>. With no major new games in development for the handheld, it&#8217;s time to look back at the titles that stand out as the absolute best the system has to offer.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/3ds-games-for-switch\/\">3DS Games We Want on Switch<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here are the best Nintendo 3DS games. Please note that we stuck to one game per franchise, and also focused on original releases as opposed to remakes or remasters.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/animal-crossings-new-leaf-cover.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Animal Crossing<\/em> franchise really blew up with\u00a0<em>Wild World<\/em> on the DS, which sold over 11 million units over the course of its lifespan. Because of this, there was a considerable amount of hype for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/animal-crossing-new-leaf-harvest-festival-activities\/\"><em>Animal Crossing: New Leaf<\/em> on the Nintendo 3DS<\/a>, and it&#8217;s safe to say that it exceeded expectations for many.\u00a0<em>New Leaf<\/em> didn&#8217;t just replicate the\u00a0<em>Wild World<\/em> experience with better graphics; it made major strides forward for the series, greatly enhancing the customization options, adding the ability to swim, and giving player a more active role in their town&#8217;s development by making them the mayor.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/8-Bravely-Default.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Square Enix likes to experiment with its\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy<\/em> series, constantly switching up the characters, gameplay mechanics, and setting. However, there are those who want\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy<\/em> to return to its roots, and for those fans, Square Enix released\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bravely-default-review\/\"><em>Bravely Default<\/em><\/a> for the Nintendo 3DS.\u00a0<em>Bravely Default<\/em> boasts many features associated with classic\u00a0<em>Final Fantasy<\/em> games, like a job system and turn-based battles, but it also established an identity of its own, spawning a high-quality RPG series in its own right.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/7-Lucina-from-Fire-Emblem-Awakening.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>For decades, Nintendo kept the\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem<\/em> franchise exclusive to Japan, believing that the games wouldn&#8217;t appeal to western audiences. But then\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem<\/em> characters appeared in\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros. Melee<\/em>, sparking newfound interest in the tactical RPG series. Nintendo finally started bringing\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem<\/em> games to the west with varying degrees of success, but the franchise really broke out into the mainstream with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fire-emblem-awakening-review\/\"><em>Fire Emblem: Awakening<\/em><\/a> on the 3DS. Appealing to newcomers and fans alike,\u00a0<em>Fire Emblem: Awakening<\/em> made the franchise more accessible than it ever had been before.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Luigis-Mansion-2-Dark-Moon.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The Nintendo GameCube launched with\u00a0<em>Luigi&#8217;s Mansion<\/em>, a kid-friendly take on the survival-horror genre starring Mario&#8217;s brother Luigi. Despite\u00a0<em>Luigi&#8217;s Mansion<\/em> being a sales success, the series remained dormant for 12 years until Next Level Games and Nintendo finally released\u00a0<em>Luigi&#8217;s Mansion: Dark Moon<\/em> on the 3DS.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/luigis-mansion-dark-moon-reviews\/\"><em>Luigi&#8217;s Mansion: Dark Moon<\/em><\/a> successfully translated the original\u00a0<em>Luigi&#8217;s Mansion<\/em> gameplay to handheld form, while also adding a slew of new gameplay features, like a cooperative multiplayer mode.\u00a0<em>Luigi&#8217;s Mansion: Dark Moon<\/em> sold over 5 million units and successfully reinvigorated the series, with\u00a0<em>Luigi&#8217;s Mansion 3<\/em> launching for the Nintendo Switch just last year.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/8-Mario-Kart-7-Toad-Circuit.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>A Nintendo system just isn&#8217;t complete without its obligatory\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/home-circuit-nintendo-never-mario-kart-9\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new\u00a0<em>Mario Kart<\/em> game<\/a>, and Nintendo was quick to release a new\u00a0<em>Mario Kart<\/em> for the 3DS. Nintendo wasn&#8217;t content to just rest on its laurels with\u00a0<em>Mario Kart 7<\/em> on the 3DS, though.\u00a0<em>Mario Kart 7<\/em> features a number of major innovations for the franchise, including expanded vehicle customization, hang-gliders, first-person gameplay, and underwater driving.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mario-kart-7-reviews\/\">Mario Kart 7 Review<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Pokemon-X-Y-Xerneas-Yvetal.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Pokemon<\/em> franchise has long been one of Nintendo&#8217;s most popular franchises, especially when it comes to handhelds. Numerous\u00a0<em>Pokemon<\/em> games were released for the 3DS over the course of the handheld&#8217;s lifespan, but none had quite the same impact as\u00a0<em>Pokemon X &amp; Y<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Pokemon X &amp; Y<\/em> had a ton of new Pokemon for players to collect, plus it introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/niantic-pokemon-go-mega-evolution-complaints-response\/\">Mega Evolutions<\/a> to the franchise, giving classic fan favorite Pokemon brand new, more powerful forms.\u00a0<em>Pokemon X &amp; Y<\/em> also represented a significant leap forward for the franchise&#8217;s visuals, as they were the first main series\u00a0<em>Pokemon<\/em> games released for the 3DS.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/pushmo-gameplay.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>With its expanded online capabilities, the 3DS also featured a robust offering of digital-only titles through its <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-online-3ds-switch-wii-u-maintenance-dates\/\">eShop<\/a>. One of the best games available on the eShop is undoubtedly\u00a0<em>Pushmo\u00a0<\/em>from <em>Fire Emblem<\/em> studio Intelligent Systems, along with its sequels\u00a0<em>Crashmo<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Stretchmo<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Pushmo<\/em>&#8216;s unique puzzle-solving gameplay took advantage of the system&#8217;s 3D capabilities to create a genuinely unique experience that hasn&#8217;t really been properly replicated in any other games since.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/super-mario-3D-land-in-squirrel-suit.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Similarly to\u00a0<em>Pushmo<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-3d-land-reviews\/\"><em>Super Mario 3D Land<\/em><\/a> takes advantage of the 3DS&#8217; unique glasses-free 3D capabilities to actually enhance the gameplay experience. While it&#8217;s totally possible to play through the game in 2D mode, there are definitely some things that get lost in translation. Regardless,\u00a0<em>Super Mario 3D Land<\/em> is a high quality\u00a0<em>Super Mario<\/em> platforming experience that plays like a bite-sized\u00a0<em>Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> in many ways.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/super-smash-bros-cloud-final-fantasy-7-gameplay.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Nintendo&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em> franchise has consistently been one of its top-sellers since it debuted on the Nintendo 64. It finally made its handheld debut on the 3DS with\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS<\/em>. Virtually the same game as the Wii U version,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/smash-bros-3ds-reviews\/\"><em>Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS<\/em><\/a> successfully translated the\u00a0<em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em> fighting game experience to handheld form, with an impressive, expansive roster of characters to choose from.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/A-Link-Between-Worlds-1.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>The 3DS was a great system for\u00a0<em>Zelda<\/em> fans. Besides the remakes of\u00a0<em>Ocarina of Time<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Majora&#8217;s Mask<\/em>, the 3DS also featured\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-of-zelda-a-link-between-worlds-reviews\/\"><em>The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds<\/em><\/a>.
