Just when fans were anticipating some juicy\u00a0Breath of the Wild 2\u00a0<\/em>news, Nintendo announced a brand new prequel of the same story,\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/strong>. It wasn’t what fans were expecting, but still, many fans are getting geared up based on what the trailer has to offer.<\/p>\n

But what does this mean for\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>‘s release date? With next year being the 35th anniversary of the\u00a0Legend of Zelda\u00a0<\/em>franchise and with\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em>\u00a0coming in November<\/a>, it’ll likely be a while before any news is dropped. Fans shouldn’t expect anything out of this year, in other words.<\/p>\n

Rather than following the same gameplay style as\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>, Nintendo made the interesting decision to create\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>as a\u00a0prequel to\u00a0Hyrule Warriors.<\/em>\u00a0This will enable the players to experience the events of 100 years before\u00a0Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>not only through Link’s eyes but the four champions as well<\/a>. And what really gets some amped up for the game is the promise that Zelda will finally once again be a playable character, and based on the trailer, the story seems to revolve around the Princess and her sealing magic quite a bit.<\/p>\n

While\u00a0Breath of the Wild\u00a0<\/em>took many risks by changing up a tried and true formula seen in decades of games, perhaps\u00a0Age of Calamity\u00a0<\/em>is an even bigger one by introducing a BotW-<\/em>style Princess Zelda<\/a> as a playable character. Many fans are hoping for the opportunity to play as her in\u00a0Breath of the Wild 2\u00a0<\/em>as well, and this creates the perfect opportunity for Nintendo to experiment with her.\u00a0With\u00a0Hyrule Warriors<\/em>, the developers can gauge fan reaction to Zelda’s playstyle and mechanics and decide how to proceed. Her balance may be different from Link’s\u00a0if Nintendo\u00a0decides to diverge from her style seen in the original\u00a0Hyrule Warriors\u00a0<\/em>and focus on her magical abilities.<\/p>\n

Additionally, the events depicted in\u00a0Age of Calamity<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>will further expand on the events recounted through Link’s memories in\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em>. Again, this presents Nintendo with the opportunity to judge and calibrate aspects of\u00a0Breath of the Wild 2<\/em>\u00a0based on fan reaction,\u00a0<\/em>not only with story, but with gameplay elements as well. If fans decide they loved a certain mechanic, Nintendo could choose to reprise it in the sequel. If they hate something, Nintendo knows not to include it.<\/p>\n

Following only one year behind\u00a0Super Mario<\/em>,\u00a0The Legend of Zelda’<\/em>s 35th anniversary will be next year in 2021. Many fans have speculated that Nintendo will likely offer the same treatment of\u00a0Zelda\u00a0<\/em>games, similar to the release of\u00a0Super Mario All-Stars\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a03D All-Stars<\/em>, and unveil popular classics from the franchise into ports and packages. Word of Wii U ports like\u00a0Wind Waker\u00a0<\/em>HD\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Twilight Princess\u00a0<\/em>HD\u00a0<\/em>as well as\u00a0a\u00a0Skyward Sword<\/em>\u00a0Switch remaster<\/a> have already been around the rumor mill thanks to industry insiders.<\/p>\n

However, rumors of remasters and ports of several\u00a0Mario\u00a0<\/em>franchise titles had been circulating throughout most of 2020, and it was only in September that Nintendo decided to announce a ton of\u00a0Super Mario\u00a0<\/em>games coming to the Switch. Furthermore,\u00a0Super Mario 3D All-Stars<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was only announced about two weeks ahead of its release date. It’s possible that this is a sales tactic being used by Nintendo to create more hype off the bat, as is the idea of only having\u00a03D All-Stars<\/em>\u00a0playable until the end of March 2021. So if Nintendo decides to celebrate\u00a0Zelda<\/em>‘s 35th anniversary as well, fans shouldn’t expect the Japanese developer the announce anything this year. The 35th anniversary is in February though, so it really depends on how closely it is meant to line up.<\/p>\n

Breath of the Wild<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>was originally geared for a 2020 release but was pushed back to next year, and it’s likely that, unless Covid-19 restrictions strike, the game won’t be delayed that far back. However, because\u00a0BotW\u00a0<\/em>was such a huge success among both new and old fans, Nintendo is likely planning on playing it safe by using\u00a0Age of Calamity\u00a0<\/em>to gauge reception and will use the extra development time to make adjustments to the sequel to perfect it.<\/p>\n

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0will release on November 20, 2020, exclusively for Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n
