In this quick tutorial, we’ll learn how to send emails with single and multiple attachments in Java using JavaMail<\/em> API.<\/p>\n

2. Project Setup<\/h2>\n

In this article, we’re creating a simple Maven project with javax.mail<\/a><\/em> dependency:<\/p>\n

3. Sending Mail With Attachments<\/h2>\n

First, we need to configure the email service provider’s credentials<\/a>. Then, the Session <\/em>object is created by providing the email host, port, username, and password. All these details are provided by the email host service. We can use any fake SMTP testing servers for our code.<\/p>\n
Session<\/b><\/em> object will work as a connection factory to handle the configuration and authentication for <\/strong>JavaMail<\/b><\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n
Now that we have a Session<\/em> object, let’s move further and create MimeMessage<\/em> and MimeBodyPart<\/em> object. We use these objects to create the email message:<\/p>\n
Message message = new MimeMessage(session); \r\nmessage.setFrom(new InternetAddress(from)); \r\nmessage.setRecipients(Message.RecipientType.TO, InternetAddress.parse(to)); \r\nmessage.setSubject(\"Test Mail Subject\"); \r\nBodyPart messageBodyPart = new MimeBodyPart(); \r\nmessageBodyPart.setText(\"Mail Body\");\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
In the above snippet, we’ve created the MimeMessage<\/em> object with required details such as from, to, and subject. Then, we’ve got a MimeBodyPart<\/em> object with the email body.<\/p>\n
Now, we need to create another MimeBodyPart<\/em> to add an attachment in our mail:<\/p>\n
MimeBodyPart attachmentPart = new MimeBodyPart();\r\nattachmentPart.attachFile(new File(\"C:\\\\Document1.txt\"));\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
We’ve now two MimeBodyPart<\/em> objects for one mail Session. So we need to create one MimeMultipart<\/em> object and then add both the MimeBodyPart<\/em> objects into it:<\/p>\n
Multipart multipart = new MimeMultipart();\r\nmultipart.addBodyPart(messageBodyPart);\r\nmultipart.addBodyPart(attachmentPart);\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
Finally, the MimeMultiPart<\/em> is added to the MimeMessage<\/em> object as our mail content and the Transport.send()<\/em> method is invoked to send the message:<\/p>\n
message.setContent(multipart);\r\nTransport.send(message);\r\n<\/code><\/pre>\n
To summarize, the <\/strong>Message<\/b><\/em> contains <\/strong>MimeMultiPart<\/b><\/em> which further contains multiple <\/strong>MimeBodyPart(s)<\/b><\/em>. That’s how we assemble the complete email.<\/p>\n
Moreover, to send multiple attachments you can simply add another <\/strong>MimeBodyPart<\/b><\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n
