In an interview with The Gamer, Cyberpunk 2077<\/strong><\/em> quest director\u00a0Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz went in-depth regarding the motivations and lifestyles of a few specific Night City gangs. Specifically,\u00a0Tomaszkiewicz provided\u00a0more details on the Mox and the Voodoo Boys, both of which rely on cybernetic augmentations to do their work.<\/p>\n

Cyberpunk 2077<\/em><\/a> features a large number of rival gangs, which clash both in their ideals and in the ways they do their work. An action-packed trailer released on Friday<\/a> introduced a number of major gangs. Some of the gangs, such as the Maelstrom, focus on causing pain and chaos. Others exist to accomplish a goal\u00a0separate\u00a0from gang warfare.\u00a0For example, the Mox exists to protect Night City’s sex workers, while the Voodoo Boys explore what might be described as a futuristic version of the dark web.<\/p>\n

According to Tomaszkiewicz, the Mox serve as a sort of sex workers’ union. Sex workers (whether affiliated with the Mox or not) work at\u00a0Doll Houses throughout Night City. The sex workers in these facilities can use cybernetic enhancements to erase their own memories of each session with a client. Plus, these same augmentations may allow them to stimulate a client’s subconscious self. It is unclear whether this will serve as a form of mind control, a well-worn sci-fi trope<\/a>. Given that multiple gangs seem to run Dollhouses, it is possible that\u00a0Doll Houses could reflect larger story beats about gang conflict.<\/p>\n

The other gang\u00a0Tomaszkiewicz detailed was the Voodoo Boys, a Haitian gang in Pacifica, an unfinished part of Night City.\u00a0Cyberpunk 2077<\/em>‘s\u00a0twisted lore<\/a> includes the destruction of the traditional Internet by special malware known as Demons. By 2077, a newer version of the Internet exists, but the original Internet is still out there, behind a virtual barrier known as the Blackwall. The Voodoo Boys focus on determining what is on the other side of the Blackwall.\u00a0Tomaszkiewicz hinted that this\u00a0would include AI programs that evolved without any kind of supervision. As cybernetics allow users to manifest the Internet as a three-dimensional construct in their mind, exploring the secrets behind the Blackwall is extremely dangerous.<\/p>\n

The interview included a few passing details about other Night City factions.\u00a0Tomaszkiewicz stated that the gun-toting gang known as 6th Street supports the future version of the US government, even though Night City is an autonomous city-state in 2077. Another gang, The Maelstrom, experiences “cyber-psychosis” and will sometimes torture victims by installing cybernetic augmentations against their will. Finally,\u00a0Tomaszkiewicz noted that the Night City police force is largely (but not exclusively) corrupt, making it a sort of unofficial gang unto itself.<\/p>\n

Players may be disappointed that they cannot join a specific gang<\/a> to take over Night City. After all, many of the gangs have rich lore and motivations that players might want to support throughout the game. Still, having all of these gangs\u00a0will create a dynamic and exciting city.<\/p>\n

Cyberpunk 2077\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>releases on November 19th for PC, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions also in development.<\/p>\n
