They have a way of capturing the imagination and fantasy of others, which is why so many childhoods are were filled with dinosaur movies, shows, books, and of course, video games. One of the best examples of this\u00a0is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/turok\/\"><em>Turok<\/em>\u00a0series<\/a> of (mostly) gritty action games.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/forgotten-first-person-shooters-need-play\/\">10 Forgotten First Person Shooters You Need To Play<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Based on a comic book character that dates all the way back to the 1950s, the <em>Turok<\/em> games focus on the titular character(s) as he\/they battles the prehistoric creatures. Built on the basic foundation of<em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/quake\/\">Quake<\/a><\/em> meets <em>Jurassic Park<\/em>, it spawned its own franchise that lasted for years. And, thanks to recent releases of remasters of the original titles, public interest in the\u00a0<em>Turok<\/em> games seems to be on the rise for the first time in a long time.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (1997)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Switch-Turok-Remaster-Raptors.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Light on story, the first <em>Turok<\/em> game primarily consisted of running through levels and kill dinosaurs and other various enemies. <em>Turok: Dinosaur Hunter<\/em> was a healthy blend of the Id Software titles like Quake and <em>Doom<\/em>,\u00a0mixed with more open-ended <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/metroidvania-metroid-vs-castlevania-reasons\/\">Metroidvania-style<\/a> levels that feature puzzle solving.<\/p>\n<p>It was initially released for the Nintendo 64 and became one of the system&#8217;s most successful titles, warranting ports and sequels.\u00a0It was eventually remastered for PC, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Turok 2: Seeds Of Evil (1998)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turok-2-Seeds-of-Evil-Steam-version.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The first game mainly focused on the dinosaur aspect with gradual\u00a0veering into crazy enemies like aliens and robots.\u00a0Meanwhile, the\u00a0sequel drops the player right into the insanity as Turok now needs to save the universe from the evil creature known as the Primagen.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-64-longest-games\/\">10 Nintendo 64 Games That Take The Longest To Beat<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The levels are bigger, the puzzles are more\u00a0challenging, the enemies are more deadly, and there are a ton of new weapons to unlock. <em>Turok 2<\/em> is generally considered the better game, though\u00a0its\u00a0campaign is long and relentlessly difficult. This game also\u00a0saw multiple remasters.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Turok: Rage Wars (1999)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turok-Rage-Wars-Gameplay.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Taking an EA Games approach, Acclaim made <em>Rage Wars<\/em> as a non-canon multiplayer spin-off with a tacked-on single-player mode. Due to this, it wasn&#8217;t as well-received as its predecessors\u2014 though by 1999, content-starved N64 owners couldn&#8217;t afford to be quite so picky and many bought it regardless.<\/p>\n<p>However, from just a multiplayer point of view, it did have refined gameplay and impressive arenas to fight in. If one could get over the lack of a campaign, it could be a fun time for four players, provided they weren&#8217;t still playing\u00a0<em>Goldeneye<\/em> to death.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Turok 3: Shadow Of Oblivion (2000)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Turok-3-N64-Boss.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>With <em>Shadow Of Oblivion<\/em> being the fourth\u00a0entry in the series in as many years, the game&#8217;s engine was showing its age by this point, and it just couldn&#8217;t stack up to what was out there by the year 2000. While it features some neat story concepts, <em>Turok 3<\/em> more or less feels like a &#8220;been there, done that&#8221; kind of sequel.<\/p>\n<p>The game focuses on Joshua Fireseed, the latest member of the Turok bloodline dealing with the aftermath of the Primagen&#8217;s destruction. The best thing the game features is the ability to save anywhere instead of waiting 45 minutes to find a save point.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Turok: Evolution (2002)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turok-Evolution-Gameplay.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>After two sequels and a multiplayer spin-off, the <em>Turok<\/em> team decided to go with a prequel to tell the origins of Turok. This time, <em>Turok<\/em> waited a few years to get an upgrade on the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-two-games-deserve-remasters\/\">PlayStation 2<\/a> with <em>Turok: Evolution<\/em>. As a whole, <em>Turok: Evolution\u00a0<\/em>was seen as an\u00a0upgrade from <em>Shadows Of Oblivion<\/em>,\u00a0though that isn&#8217;t the highest of praise.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-online-ps2-games\/\">The 10 Best PlayStation 2 Games You Could Play Online<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The gameplay is solid but the story is very lacking, and the whole game has a rushed feeling to it. It also features Tobias Bruckner, a villain so\u00a0awful that <em>EGM<\/em> magazine named an award for bad video games after him.<em> Turok: Evolution<\/em> would be the last game to take place within the original timeline of games before being rebooted years later.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Turok (2008)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turok-2008-video-game.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Rather than try to shoehorn a new sequel into the previous confusing mess of a timeline, some new developers decided to reboot\u00a0the franchise with the simply-named\u00a0<em>Tuork<\/em>.\u00a0The game sees the titular hero as a futuristic soldier who comes to an alien planet to bring down a radical terrorist, and it becomes the ultimate warzone as\u00a0he must fend off\u00a0hordes of alien dinosaurs.<\/p>\n<p>The reboot is an ambitious game\u00a0featuring a villain played by the wonderful\u00a0Powers Boothe, a major step up from Tobias Bruckner. However, it suffers from repetitive levels and enemies with unintended weaknesses that are easily exploitable. A decent effort, but not good enough to kick off a new era for the franchise.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Turok: Escape From Lost Valley (2019)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Turok-Escape-From-Lost-Valley.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>For years, fans were under the impression that they would never see another <em>Turok<\/em> game. In 2019, the gaming\u00a0world was\u00a0shocked by the surprise drop of a brand new<em> Turok<\/em> game\u2014\u00a0but there was a twist. <em>Turok: Escape From Lost Valley<\/em> took things in a very different direction than previous titles.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of the gritty, action-packed shooters which fans were\u00a0accustomed to, the new game was a cute and cartoonish third-person\u00a0title. Meanwhile, it featured drastically different gameplay\u00a0that was a far cry from the fast-paced, violent, epic action of previous titles.
