Marvel<\/strong><\/a> Studios has recruited a team filmmakers to direct episodes of the Ms. Marvel<\/em> series for Disney+. The roster of directors includes Meera Menon, Oscar winner\u00a0Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, and Bad Boys for Life<\/em> filmmakers\u00a0Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah.<\/p>\n

In 2018, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed plans to introduce\u00a0Kamala Khan<\/a> to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after the release of Captain Marvel<\/em>. The details of those plans were unveiled during Marvel Studios’ presentation at D23 2019\u00a0when Feige officially announced a Ms. Marvel<\/em> series was being developed for Disney+\u00a0to introduce fans to Kamala Khan before\u00a0she\u00a0is featured in future Marvel Studios films.<\/p>\n

The Direct<\/a> first reported on the involvement of Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, who will direct multiple episodes from scripts penned by writer\u00a0and showrunner Bisha K. Ali. The duo’s previous credits included\u00a0Black<\/em> and Pastor <\/em>before they sat in the director’s\u00a0chair for the third installment of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s Bad Boys<\/em> film series, which is currently the highest-grossing U.S. film of 2020 with\u00a0$425.6 million worldwide. In 2012, director\u00a0Obaid-Chinoy made history as the first\u00a0Pakistan-born filmmaker to win an Academy Award<\/a> for her documentary Saving Face<\/em> and she would earn a second Oscar in 2016 for\u00a0A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness<\/i>. Menon’s most well-known previous credits include episodes of\u00a0Walking Dead<\/em>,\u00a0The Punisher<\/em>,\u00a0Titans<\/em>,\u00a0For All Mankind,\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Outlander<\/em>, but her feature work includes the independent film\u00a0Farah Goes Bang <\/em>and the 2016 Sundance entry\u00a0Equity<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Created by\u00a0Sana Amanat,\u00a0G. Willow Wilson, and\u00a0Adrian Alphona, Kamala Khan was introduced in 2014 as the first Muslim character to frontline her own Marvel comic title. In the comic book lore, Khan is a Pakistani-American from\u00a0Jersey City, New Jersey who discovers she has inhuman genes that grant her shapeshifting abilities. After her mentor Carol Danvers relinquishes the Ms. Marvel title to become Captain Marvel<\/a>, Khan takes up the abandoned moniker to\u00a0protect her local community.<\/p>\n

Ms. Marvel<\/em> is not only one of the many projects Marvel Studios has lined up as it moves toward producing television shows alongside feature films, it also marks the latest effort on the company to include more diverse talent both onscreen and behind the camera. While the role of\u00a0Kamala Khan has yet to be cast, the character will become the first Muslim hero in any Marvel Studios’ project.<\/p>\n

While moviegoing audiences may be unfamiliar with Khan, the character has become one of the more popular newcomers to most comic book readers. In fact, the heroine has proven to be successful enough to merit being a member of the titular team in the Marvel’s Avengers<\/em> video game<\/a> that was released in early September.<\/p>\n

Ms. Marvel<\/em> is scheduled to premiere exclusively on Disney+ in 2022.<\/p>\n
