His wife of 48 years, Robin Love, broke the news that Cobb passed away on Monday, Sept 21 (his 83rd birthday) in his adopted hometown of Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Los Angeles in 1937, Ron Cobb started as an inbetweener animator for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/disney-still-made-big-money-on-mulan-box-office-disney-plus-premiere-access\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disney<\/a> at the age of 18, progressing to breakdown artist for <em>Sleeping Beauty<\/em> in 1959. In 1960, Cobb was drafted into the US Army where he served as a draughtsman for the Signal Corps in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/back-to-the-future-musical-london-release-date\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Back to the Future Musical to Open in London in 2021<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On his return to the U.S. in 1965, Cobb worked as a freelance artist contributing political cartoons to the Los Angeles Free Press underground paper and designing album covers for Jefferson Airplane before emigrating to Sydney, Australia in 1972.\u00a0Eventually Cobb was enlisted to design the alien patrons for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fortnite-star-wars-x-wing-glider\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Star Wars<\/a>&#8216;<\/em> cantina scene and soon became one of the most demanded production designers with a string of credits that included <em>Alien,<\/em> <em>Conan the Barbarian<\/em>, <em>The Last Starfighter<\/em>, <em>Total Recall<\/em> and <em>True Lies<\/em> among others.\u00a0But it was his preliminary work on the DeLorean time machine from <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/avengers-movie-back-future-doc-brown-video-joke\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Back to the Future<\/em><\/a> that remains his most recognizable work, helping shape the iconic look of one of cinema&#8217;s coolest cars ever.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mr_clark\/status\/1308068635185946630\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Along with his production design work, Ron Cobb also wrote an episode of the 1987 <em>Twilight Zone<\/em> revival and the FMV science fiction game\u00a0<em>Loadstar: The Legend of Tully Bodine<\/em>.
