Epic Games<\/strong> has said in the past that it believes the future of gaming lies in consumers rather than big name developers, and now it seems to be putting its money where its mouth is. The corporation has made a massive $15 million investment in Manticore Games<\/a>, the company behind game development tool\u00a0Core<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Core\u00a0<\/em>seeks to give everyday people the power to create, share, and even sell compelling video games, a right which is currently restricted to triple A developers or particularly talented indie devs. Epic Games<\/a> must see a lot of potential in this model, as the investment will no doubt help get\u00a0Core\u00a0<\/em>off the ground much faster.<\/p>\n

In regards to the investment, Epic President Adam Sussman reaffirmed his commitment that the gaming industry will become an open platform before long. A system in which users drive the economy of the gaming world<\/a> and are able to create multiplayer games for each other with relative ease. Sussman even goes so far as to call it a “metaverse playground where players can discover endless entertainment.”<\/p>\n

Though it may seem a long ways off, Sussman probably isn’t too far off the mark. Recent releases have shown fans time and time again the power of giving players a bit of creative license, as these games often tend to be the most long-lived and universally enjoyed of all. Take\u00a0Minecraft<\/em>, for example, this is a game built off the concept of creativity. Now\u00a0after\u00a0Minecraft<\/a><\/em>‘s eleven year anniversary<\/a>,\u00a0it is still going just as strong as ever. Fans often thirst for a chance to show their own creative prowess within a pre-established game.<\/p>\n

The creative aspects of\u00a0Animal Crossing: New Horizons<\/em><\/a> are also a driving force behind that game’s success, and serve as further proof that fans love being able to express their creative outlets. Though there have been other tools such as RPG Maker<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Dreams<\/em> that empower players to make their own games, none seemed quite as ambitious as\u00a0Core<\/em>. Epic’s decision to back this project is also influenced by its use of Unreal Engine, which of course Epic itself creates.<\/p>\n

It remains to be seen how this $15 million investment will be put to use by Manticore Games, but\u00a0Core\u00a0<\/em>is in open Alpha right now<\/a> and can be downloaded and played for free. Makers should keep in mind that as an open Alpha, a lot could change by the time the tool officially releases, but it’s a good way to get a feel for what could come in the future.<\/p>\n
