Even with everything going on in 2020, video games continue to be sold digitally to consumers and the latest reports for digital sales show that Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em><\/strong> sold over 700K copies for PC upon its release. So much so, that the game had\u00a0nearly reached\u00a0the records for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s<\/em> initial unit sales\u00a0for PC.<\/p>\n

These sales details for Horizon\u00a0Zero Dawn<\/em><\/a> come from reports on the digital earnings released by SuperData, a provider for data on the digital gaming marketplace. Based on SuperData\u2019s analysis, digital game earnings have seen a 13% increase in 2020, so far totaling $82.8 billion with August accumulating $10.8 billion that month from new and familiar titles. While Horizon<\/em> didn’t make it to the top ten in sales for PC, it\u00a0was\u00a0popular with PC players<\/a> and\u00a0accomplished\u00a0a noticeable\u00a0achievement in\u00a0its release month.<\/p>\n

Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em>\u00a0sold 716K units for the PC on its initial release, and it was close to reaching the records of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt\u2019s<\/em> several\u00a0million copies\u00a0at launch in May 2015. The report mentioned\u00a0the game\u00a0exceeds the sales of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey<\/em> and managed to past Death Stranding\u2019s<\/em> PC sales of 477K units. This shows that\u00a0Sony’s\u00a0exploration of adding\u00a0PS4\u00a0exclusives to PC<\/a> has some merit to it through the sales.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0isn\u2019t the first time that Sony experimented with cross-platform playability in recent years. The company tested the waters with cross-play through its subscription service PlayStation Now in 2019<\/a>, where it allowed PC players to stream major exclusives as God of War<\/em>\u00a0and several others\u00a0for a limited time until January 2, 2020. This falls in line with the company’s 2020 corporate report to explore the new opportunity this offers for increasing\u00a0player accessibility with its games.<\/p>\n

This subject is not new for PlayStation that goes back a couple of years to 2018, when\u00a0Sony dabbled in\u00a0cross-play with\u00a0Fortnite<\/em><\/a> to an extent. Earlier in 2020, Sony\u2019s Worldwide studios boss Hermen Hulst stated\u00a0that the company\u00a0will keep supporting PlayStation first-party games,\u00a0but\u00a0it is\u00a0working to bring some of its games over to PC. With Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em>\u00a0selling as many copies\u00a0as it did, Sony may\u00a0keep that door open for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n
