Mementos is one of the most interesting areas in\u00a0Persona 5<\/em>\u2013\u00a0a randomly-generated dungeon that people who’ve played through Persona 3<\/em><\/a> and 4<\/em> will be quite familiar with. Mementos plays a central role in the game’s story, especially near the end of the tale. For the ardent fan who wishes to know everything there is to know about this game, here are\u00a0some things that most people didn’t have a clue\u00a0about regarding Mementos.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Mementos Has Many Names<\/h2>\n

Mementos has three different names. It’s called the “Prison of Sloth,” the “Prison of Regression,” and the “Prison of Acedia.” Given the fact that Mementos is nothing more than a location generated by a collective unconscious, it makes sense as to why there are so many monikers given to this area.<\/p>\n

The Reaper is one of the most infamous enemies in the Persona<\/em><\/a> series, appearing ever since the third iteration and causing no end of grief for players who were unsuspectingly caught by this enemy and subsequently pummeled to kingdom come. This enemy makes an appearance in Persona 5<\/em> as well, and\u00a0\u2014 just as one would expect\u00a0\u2014 can be encountered in Mementos if\u00a0players wait around for too long.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Persona 5 Royal Adds New Background Music<\/h2>\n

Persona 5 Royal<\/em>\u00a0makes everything bigger, better, and more fleshed out than it was in the original game. This can be seen in numerous instances across the re-release, including the fact that the background music in Mementos is significantly enhanced as well. It’s small touches like these that make Persona 5 Royal<\/em> feel like an entirely new game at times.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Weather Has A Significant Effect On Mementos<\/h2>\n

Weather can be just a small hindrance in the real world, but its effects are more palpable in Mementos. Rainstorms and the like cause treasure to be more bountiful in Mementos. Various forms of bad weather also make enemies more susceptible to status ailments, leading to them being afflicted with relevant negative conditions from the start of the battle itself, at times! It’s a useful piece of information to keep in\u00a0mind if players find their trek through Mementos a bit too grating for their own good.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Mementos Is Based On Sandro Botticelli’s Abyss Of Hell<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

One thing that keen artists would notice about Mementos’ design is the fact that it’s inspired by The Abyss of Hell painting from Sandro Botticelli. This is quite interesting, especially since Botticelli’s painting itself\u00a0is based on the three Stages of Hell, as described by\u00a0famed poet Dante Alighieri.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>The Seven Deadly Sins Are Written In\u00a0Latin By The Holy Grail’s Shrine<\/h2>\n

After figuring out the true mystery of Mementos, the Phantom Thieves<\/a> decide to head down into the lowest Depths to discover the source behind the muddying of people’s cognitions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This turns out to be a cognitive treasure known as the Holy Grail, which is housed in a shrine at the very depth of Mementos that has all the Seven Deadly Sins written on the floor in Latin.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Escalators Leading Downwards Signify Humanity’s Fall<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

All the stairs leading down the different Paths in Mementos\u00a0serve\u00a0as an allegory for humanity’s downfall with each and every heinous action that they do. There’s one sole exception to this, however, which has some pretty heavy connotations as well.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Why The Escalators To The\u00a0Path Of Da’at Lead Upward<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Maruki is a new character introduced in Persona 5 Royal<\/em>, who is hired as the school’s counselor post the incident with Kamoshida. He decides to use the protagonist as a way to further his own research.<\/p>\n

Later on, his experiments end up taking him down a rather dark path, forcing the Phantom Thieves to deal with his threat in Mementos. This\u00a0new path inside of Mementos\u00a0actually leads upward, which could signify the fact that Maruki saw his ambitions as a way for humanity to ascent, which is equal parts awesome and messed up.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Mementos’ Paths Are Named After The Qliphoth<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Players who have in-depth knowledge\u00a0on Jewish mysticism\u00a0will have\u00a0realized that the Paths of Mementos are named after the Qliphoth. It’s a nice little touch that shows that the people over at Atlus definitely did their research before developing\u00a0the absolute masterpiece that is Persona 5<\/em>.<\/p>\n
