In Sony’s fantastic\u00a0God Of War<\/a>,<\/em> the player must obtain armor sets and upgrade them to strengthen and expand the character\u2019s already considerable powers. Not all armor sets are created equal though, with some sets only being useful in certain situations. That said, there are some that either rise to the top or fall to the bottom in terms of general usefulness.<\/p>\n

It should be noted that by far the most powerful armor sets in the game are found in New Game Plus, but there are plenty of sets that are more than capable of helping players to\u00a0survive the main game\u00a0as well.<\/p>\n

Updated by Thomas Bowen on September 25th, 2020:\u00a0<\/strong>After months of speculation, Sony has confirmed that a new God of War game is in development<\/a>. As\u00a0God of War: Ragnarok won’t be releasing until next year at the earliest though,\u00a0the news provides fans with a great excuse\u00a0to jump back in to the world of Midgard. It’s also a great opportunity for those who didn’t get to experience this masterpiece when it first released to find out what all of the fuss is about.<\/em><\/p>\n

With that in mind, we thought that now\u00a0would\u00a0be a great time to delve a little deeper into the game’s armor sets to help both new and old players alike to gear up for tackling the game’s hardest content.<\/em><\/p>\n

15 <\/span>Best: Traveler<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Traveler armor set might not look like much on paper, but provides a very useful ability. The\u00a0Protection of the Traveler perk allows the player to\u00a0tank one hit without taking any damage. This isn’t particularly useful in most situations, but is worth its\u00a0weight in gold at one point in the game.<\/p>\n

One of the Muspelheim impossible trials requires the player to defeat as many as 35 enemies without taking any damage. Although it’s possible to succeed without the Traveler’s armor, it provides the player with something of a ‘get out of jail free’ card and can sometimes be the difference between a gold ranking or a silver.<\/p>\n

14 <\/span>Best:\u00a0Sindri’s Royal Dwarven Set<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Unlike some of the other Legendary armor sets in God of War<\/em>, Sindri’s armor can only be upgraded to level 7 during a regular playthrough. Players should not be fooled though, as despite its level, it can hold its own against many of the game’s toughest enemies.<\/p>\n

With huge bonuses to runic and cooldown\u00a0as well as a high defense stat, this armor works great for those whose combat style relies heavily on Kratos’ runic abilities. Better still, the chest plate features the arcane protective barrier perk which can potentially block all damage while Kratos is using runic attacks. As a nice bonus, the other two pieces of the set\u00a0provide boosts to frost and burn damage.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>Worst: Wolfskin<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This armor set is the best of the common rarity, but it\u2019s still the fifth-worst armor set in the game. In the very, very early parts of the game, the Wolfskin set grants some bonuses to defense, runic and strength stats that could be worth it for a few fights.<\/p>\n

It grants 20 to strength, 17 to runic, and 34 to defense so it\u2019s pretty well rounded in the early game. If you have to pick a common set go for this one. Otherwise, sell it for the Hacksilver and stick to better armor sets, it\u2019s not worth upgrading.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>Best: Brok’s Royal Dwarven Set<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

As with Sindri’s armor, Brok’s set can only be upgraded to level 7. Where it differs from Sindri’s armor though is through its inbuilt perks.<\/p>\n

Each piece of Brock’s armor increases the rate at which Kratos’ rage meter fills by 10%, allowing players to utilize his Spartan rage a lot more often. It also has a noticeably higher defense stat, so it might just be the better choice for those who don’t use runic attacks that often.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Best: Fallen Ash<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The Fallen Ash armor set is one of the best looking sets in the game (until you get to the Zeus and Ares sets in New Game Plus, that is) and is an all-around great armor set to have. With 100 in defense and a 24 stat boost to strength, this armor will keep you alive and deal some serious damage.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s best about this armor is the perk Retaliation of Fire,\u00a0which has a chance of dealing concussive burn damage to any enemy foolish enough to deal damage to you. It\u2019s a great passive ability that can whittle down opponents as they attack and make your job a whole lot easier.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Worst: Viken<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The gold trim makes this armor set feel like a step up from the other common sets, but honestly, it\u2019s still pretty abysmal compared to almost everything else. It grants 43 defense and 10 vitality so it can keep you alive longer than a Wolfskin armor set, but is considered worse because you won’t be doing a whole lot of damage back.<\/p>\n

This somewhat spongy piece of common armor can be helpful if you have a good weapon and don\u2019t need the strength or runic boosts, but really this shouldn\u2019t be on your body very long and should only be in your inventory long enough to be carried to the store and sold.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Best: Valkyrie<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This armor set is obtained after the player takes down the nine Valkyries found in the game. The three pieces will drop as a result of these battles providing the player with a strong set of armor. The Valkyrie set gives 40 strength, 30 runic, 139 defense, and 21 vitality.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s admittedly not as durable as other armor sets, but what makes the Valkyrie set so powerful is its Arcane Runic ability. This perk gives the player a chance to decrease their cooldown by 57 when they use a runic ability, allowing players to use runic abilities more frequently in battle.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Best: Ivaldi\u2019s Cursed Mist<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Now here\u2019s a piece of armor that\u2019s a little more complicated to obtain and upgrade, but doing so gives you a tremendous advantage in the game. The Mist set of armor is obtained after farming Mist Echoes in the maze of Niflheim. This particular armor set is considered the weakest of the three variations.<\/p>\n

It grants 46 strength, 112 runic, and 136 defense, but its true value is the constant health regeneration you obtain from wearing the armor. The reason it doesn\u2019t rank higher is that it lacks a boost in vitality, which means you aren\u2019t as spongy. But make no mistake, this is a fantastic set of armor.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Worst: Reaver<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Like the Viken set, but minus the gold trim, the Reaver set offers 24 defense at full upgrade and that\u2019s it, there are no perks to strength, vitality, nothing. Spending time to upgrade this armor set is a tremendous waste of valuable Hacksilver.<\/p>\n

On the bright side, it is a set of armor you\u2019ll obtain naturally from playing the game and won\u2019t get through any special quest or extensive farming. But you\u2019ll be wanting something much better.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Best: Ivaldi\u2019s Endless Mist<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The second best variation of the Mist armor set is Ivaldi\u2019s Endless Mist. It grants 46 strength, 156 defense, and 70 to vitality. This armor is better for straightforward fighting builds and grants the incredibly useful health regeneration like the other Mist armor sets.<\/p>\n

The reason it doesn\u2019t rank higher is that it lacks any bonuses to Runic abilities. Runic powers are very strong attacks that if properly invested in can make the player nearly unstoppable, capable of delivering brutal damage towards the end of the game. Unfortunately, this armor just doesn\u2019t provide any bonus for it.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Best: Ivaldi\u2019s Deadly Mist<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

By far the best armor set in the main game is Ivaldi\u2019s Deadly Mist set. It provides 72 strength, 56 runic, 146 defense, and 40 vitality, along with the familiar Regenerating Essence perk that puts a constant healing effect on your character.<\/p>\n

The reason this is one of the best armor sets in the game is that the stats are the most balanced, meaning any build type can pick this up and do well. Sure, a case could be made for why another armor set might be more valuable to a specific build, but this works for them all.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Worst: Boar Hide<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This armor set is very, very basic. At its max upgrade, it provides 30 strength and 10 defense. Admittedly the strength bonus is very valuable and on par with stronger armor sets, but the defense stat and lack of other critical stats or perks mean you better hope your strikes drop the enemy quick or you\u2019ll feel the retaliation.<\/p>\n

Skilled players can make this armor\u2019s strength bonus work to their advantage, but most new players will die too quickly to really take full advantage of it. In the beginning of the game as a new player, it\u2019s better to stick to more durable armor types and sell this as quick as you can.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>Best: Armor Of Ares<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

For those wanting to be the real God of War, Ares’ armor provides up to 137 strength, 200 defense, 76 luck and 100 cooldown. Those stats alone should be enough to convince players to tackle the game’s new game plus mode in order to obtain it, but where it really shines is through its perk.<\/p>\n

Rage Field massively increases the speed at which rage is gained and decreases the rate\u00a0at which it drains. There is something of a trade-off though, as players will have to sacrifice a portion of their rage bar if they decide to wear this armor.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Best: Armor Of Zeus<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

The armor that once belonged to Kratos’ father is considered by many to be the best in the game. With 145 strength, defense, and runic,\u00a0as well as a perk that greatly increases the strength of Kratos’ regular attacks, this armor is no joke. It’s easy to see why the developers opted to lock the Zeus set behind the new game plus mode.<\/p>\n

Kratos is able to tear through enemies while wearing it, although the perk also increases the damage that enemies deal to Kratos making him something of a glass cannon. Depending on playstyle, players might be better off opting for a different set or combining sets to find the balance that best suits them.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Worst: Exile<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

By far the worst armor in the game belongs to the default armor set you start the game with. It offers 8 defense and nothing else. This is the worst armor rating in the game and you are unable to upgrade it beyond it\u2019s starting level one status.<\/p>\n

It is free and it\u2019s better than nothing in the opening acts of the game, but the only players who\u2019ll wear this long term are those looking to do a special challenge run or fools. Anything, absolutely anything is better than these armor pieces so swap them out as soon as you can.<\/p>\n
