But as the popularity of open world games still continues to grow, few of them look for influence across the pond, favoring\u00a0fictional worlds or the east or west coast of North America. However, though the options are scarce, there are sandbox games that take advantage of Europe\u2019s aesthetics.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Grand Theft Auto: London<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/A02F234C-3384-4FE9-A47D-74F76A236377.jpeg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>GTA<\/i> might be the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-rockstar-arent-gta-or-red-dead\/\">most popular Rockstar series there is<\/a>, but there are some older entries that\u00a0players might not have heard of. <i>GTA<\/i> was the series\u00a0that started it all, and though the game was top down and the series hadn\u2019t reached the three dimensional worlds at this point, London was as rendered as well as it ever could. The game was based in the 1960s and though it was met with a mixed reception from\u00a0critics, the game won a BAFTA, which is almost certainly due to players\u00a0seeing new countries represented in video games.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Getaway &#8211; London<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/THE-GETAWAY.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>Getaway<\/em> was one of the few successful imitations of <i>Grand Theft Auto<\/i>, as instead of creating another American metropolitan or putting their eggs in different baskets by featuring several different cities, Team Soho decided to focus on London only and relish the cockney slang and winding streets. As far as <i>GTA<\/i> clones go, <i>Getaway<\/i> (and its sequel) was one of the best of its generation and still remains\u00a0great to this day.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Assassin\u2019s Creed: Unity &#8211;\u00a0Paris<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/assassins-creed-unity-box-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It seems like <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/assassins-creed\/\"><i>Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/i><\/a> is the only AAA series that doffs its cap to Europe, and the rest of the world, as almost every game in the entry is features a huge European city to explore. Whether it\u2019s walking over cobbled stones\u00a0in Victorian England, battling vikings in Norway, or taking down the\u00a0Byzantine\u00a0empire in Constantinople, the Ubisoft series is synonymous with open world maps in Europe. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/assassins-creed-unity\/\"><i>Assassin\u2019s Creed: Unity<\/i><\/a> is the best example of this thanks in to its dense exploration of Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Midnight Club II &#8211; Paris<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/need-for-speed-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Though EA<i>\u00a0<\/i>jumped on the popularity of <i>The Fast and the Furious<\/i>\u00a0franchise quickly by releasing <i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.es\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjuufLJ4OjrAhWLsRQKHT30AP8QFjAAegQIAxAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fgamerant.com%2Ftag%2Fneed-for-speed%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw1kkY4vghiwxSDJH1TlKmPP\">Need For Speed Underground<\/a>,<\/i>\u00a0an arcade style racer with souped up Japanese imports, <i>Midnight Club<\/i> was doing it long before that. <i>MC<\/i> could be seen as the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/pro-evolution-soccer\/\"><i>Pro Evolution Soccer<\/i><\/a> of arcade racers, as the popularity of <i>Need for Speed<\/i> dwarfed the series, just like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.es\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj0-bi-4OjrAhUJmRQKHdewCgEQFjAAegQIBRAB&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fgamerant.com%2Ftag%2Ffifa%2F&amp;usg=AOvVaw3NX8eFSMCw3JL5QVB8Z-X2\"><i>FIFA<\/i><\/a><\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0did to <i>PES<\/i>, and <i>Midnight Club<\/i>\u00a0didn\u2019t have any licensed cars, just like PES didn\u2019t have licensed kits.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-games-not-big-skyrim\/\">10 Open-World Games To Play If Skyrim Is Too Big For You<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">But despite this, <i>Midnight Club<\/i> was the ultimate game of the two racers due to having the ability to free roam and allowing players make their own route to each checkpoint. Better still, the series went oversees, with the best example of this being in Paris. Additionally, if players\u00a0had a car with good enough acceleration, they could drive up the Louvre in Paris, which has had fans <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/rockstar-games-dead-midnight-club-bully-la-noire-agent\/\">wishing the series would be brought back<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>The Italian Job &#8211; Italy<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/DAB164EF-3F37-4DC4-A7F2-CBFF7385A816.png' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There are no awards for guessing which open world <i>The Italian Job<\/i> dabbles in. <i>The Italian Job<\/i> features a fun interpretation of Turin (and London too), and though it was released over thirty years after the release of one of the most classic movies ever made, the game is surprisingly faithful to the movie and played fairly smoothly. Though the chase sequence at the end of the film has been hilariously recreated in <i>GTA V<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Wheelman &#8211; Barcelona<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/9C0411FE-B9C1-4888-B1B4-BE8C6D6F9DE5.jpeg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><em>Wheelman<\/em> may have been nothing more than a failed experiment in which Vin Diesel tried to dominate games consoles just like the box office. It\u2019s safe to say that <i>Wheelman<\/i> performed as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/movie-based-games-metacritic-worst-bad\/\">awful <i>Fast and Furious<\/i> tie in games<\/a>, but <i>Wheelman\u2019s<\/i> gameplay handled surprisingly well. Better yet, the game is based in a fully open Barcelona that was littered with destructible objects and Catalonia\u2019s<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>criminal underworld.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Tony Hawk\u2019s Underground 2 &#8211; Barcelona<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/PS2-Tony-Hawks-Underground-2-Skating.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>THUG2<\/i> was the most polarizing entry in the entire <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/tony-hawks-pro-skater\/\"><i>Tony Hawk<\/i> series<\/a>, as it was seen as jumping the shark to some fans, but also seen as expanding the brand\u2019s horizons to others, who are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-changestony-hawks-pro-skater-1-2-remake-worst\/\">begging for a remake<\/a>. But one thing that the game did best was expanding the globe trotting locations the series became known for in to gigantic maps (for the time) and making it completely interactive. Barcelona is many fans\u2019 favourite, not only of the game but of the entire series.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Div3r &#8211; Nice\/Istanbul<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Driv3r-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It\u2019s no secret that <i>Grand Theft Auto<\/i> inspired a wave, an absolute unstoppable tsunami, of knock off games created by developers who thought a bare bones open world and basic third person mechanics could compete with Rockstar. Well, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/worst-open-world-games-of-all-time-according-to-metacritic\/\">Driv3r is the epitome of that era<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/open-world-games-need-remake-mafia-definitive-edition\/\">10 Old Open-World Games That Need A Remake After Mafia: Definitive Edition<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The developer didn\u2019t realize what it was that made <i>GTA<\/i> so great. The open world of <i>GTA<\/i> wasn\u2019t fun because players could decide which lane to be in, but because the world was so interactive and full of secrets. However, as empty and uninteractive as\u00a0<i>Driv3r<\/i>\u00a0is, it has full cities of both Nice and Istanbul, and it looks beautiful just cruising around. Admiring the polygons that make up the beautiful Nice terraces is kind of quaint.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Test Drive Unlimited 2 &#8211; Ibiza<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/test-drive-unlmited-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Unfortunately, <em>Test Drive Unlimited 2<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-worst-video-game-sequels\/\">wasn\u2019t the best of sequels<\/a>, as it was plagued from the start as the developer crumbled from the pressure of trying to create a completely online racing simulator. However, the game did live up to the series\u2019 impressive visuals with a rendering of Ibiza that rivaled its predecessor\u2019s amalgam of Hawaii islands. The rendering of Ibiza still kept it exciting to roam around, despite its bugs and glitches.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Just Cause 3 &#8211; Fictional City of Medici<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/just-cause-3.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">No other game has ever embraced being an open world adventure\u00a0as much as the <i>Just Cause<\/i> series.
