2020 has thrown up a lot of surprises, but no one could have predicted Deadpool<\/em>‘s Ryan Reynolds and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia<\/em>‘s Rob McElhenney <\/a>teaming up to make a bid on an obscure soccer team based in Wales. Yet here we are. Wrexham AFC announced on Sept 23\u00a0 that “in due course, Mr. McElhenney and Mr. Reynolds will put forward their vision for Wrexham FC and proposal for members to vote on at a second Special General Meeting”, this isn’t a joke by the way<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The club, the third oldest soccer team in the world, currently sits on the fifth-tier of the National League in the U.K. and has been owned by its supporters since 2011; it is they who will vote to decide if McElhenney’s and Reynolds’ investment will go ahead. Wrexham FC trust director Spencer Harris said, “I’ve spoken to both of them several times. “They are very serious, professional and successful people, not just as actors but in the business world as well and this is a very serious endeavour for them and they’ll set out their vision in due course, but I know they are very passionate about this and have gone into a lot of depth to understand about the football club.”<\/p>\n

As well as playing the wisecracking smartass mutant Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds is also a major shareholder in\u00a0Aviation American Gin\u00a0which sold for over $600 million<\/a>,\u00a0 has an ownership stake in phone operator Mint Mobile <\/a>for whom he managed to coax Rick Moranis into his first screen appearance\u00a0in over a decade, and he currently sits on the board of internet dating giant Match Group. Reynolds referenced the news on Twitter by quoting a tweet from 2012 saying “you never know when Ryan Reynolds is going to turn up in Wrexham”, and this is all just getting way too weird.<\/p>\n
