In particular, the ad promotes a lootbox system where spending money does not lead to a guaranteed award, angering lootbox critics.<\/p>\n<p>EA is no stranger to criticism regarding its aggressive approach to microtransactions. The company famously defended in-game purchases in\u00a0<em>Star Wars: Battlefront 2<\/em> as promoting &#8220;a sense of pride and accomplishment.&#8221; This led to an <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/star-wars-battlefront-2-loot-box-controversy-world-record\/\">unprecedented backlash against EA from <em>Star Wars<\/em> fans<\/a>, but the issue pervades far more games the company release.\u00a0For example, purchasing all available DLC for\u00a0<em>The Sims 4<\/em> would cost well over 500 dollars.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-sims-4-star-wars-response\/\">EA Responds to Fan Criticisms of The Sims 4 Star Wars DLC<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>As shared by Twitter user @AllFifaMistakes, the advertisement appears\u00a0in the magazine of\u00a0United Kingdom retailer Smyths Toys.\u00a0The full-page ad compels children to immerse themselves in <em>FIFA 21<\/em>&#8216;s version of\u00a0the\u00a0FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) mode. Although popular, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/fifa-ea-ultimate-team-lawsuit\/\">FUT was hit with a California lawsuit<\/a>\u00a0in August 2020 for promoting gambling-like practices. The ad frames microtransactions as the second of four steps needed to enjoy the game. It&#8217;s important to note that players can still access FUT without microtransactions, so it is disingenuous to imply they are necessary.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AllFifaMistakes\/status\/1309892403994791940\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>To be fair, microtransactions are a pervasive issue across the video game industry, not just EA. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/marvels-avengers-microtransaction-costs\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Marvel&#8217;s Avengers<\/em> recently raised eyebrows<\/a>\u00a0for its expensive in-game purchases. To be fair, all purchasable content in\u00a0<em>Marvel&#8217;s Avengers<\/em>\u00a0is cosmetic, so players will not be at a disadvantage without it. This differs from\u00a0<em>FIFA 21<\/em>&#8216;s FUT mode, where the ability to use specific celebrities is locked behind a lootbox system.<\/p>\n<p>For many, the context of the industry does not exonerate EA. Even\u00a0if players can access FUT mode without microtransactions, the ad implies those purchases are necessary. This means children will think those purchases are necessary. As a new console generation arrives and children buy game consoles for the first time,\u00a0many hope the industry does not normalize in-app purchases in upcoming games. Soon-to-be-released\u00a0games marketed to children, like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/crash-bandicoot-4-its-about-time-no-microtransactions\/\">Crash Bandicoot 4: It&#8217;s About Time<\/a><\/em>, will not have microtransactions, but it remains to be seen whether this will become standard industry practice.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, some\u00a0might argue that EA serves as a scapegoat for the industry as a whole.
