When it comes to space exploration games, there are a few known staples. While\u00a0No Man’s Sky<\/em> has come into its own, for many, it is still the space of\u00a0Elite: Dangerous<\/em><\/strong> that holds the most promise. One of the first prominently integrated SteamVR titles of its time<\/a>,\u00a0Elite: Dangerous<\/em>\u00a0is still growing six years later.<\/p>\n

What makes\u00a0Elite: Dangerous<\/a><\/em>\u00a0fun for so many is the freedom it gives players. Marketed somewhat less ambitiously than\u00a0No Man’s Sky<\/em>, it delivered on most of what it promised. The title sees players exploring a huge galaxy in piloted spaceships, carrying cargo from station to station and fighting both pirates and each other. Since its original launch, it has received lots of support and updates. This often takes the form of DLC, such as with\u00a0Elite: Dangerous Horizons<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Since its inception, the DLC of\u00a0Elite: Dangerous<\/em> has launched new concepts in the game. The latest added Fleet Carriers, which have already changed exploration<\/a>. One of the most important is\u00a0Horizons<\/em>. The DLC adds the first instances of multicrew co-op, fighters that are launched from ships in combat, and\u00a0planetary landing\/exploration in surface vehicles.\u00a0The planetary craft add an entirely new dimension to galactic exploration. On October 27th, everyone will get to experience that dimension when\u00a0Horizons<\/em> goes free to play.<\/p>\n

There are a few reasons behind this move. For one, it has been four years since\u00a0Horizons<\/em> released, and it has become integral to the game. The more immediate reason however is the upcoming release of the\u00a0Odyssey<\/em> DLC. In Elite: Dangerous Odyssey<\/em>, players can explore planets on foot<\/a> for the first time. This means that planetary landing is required to experience\u00a0Odyssey<\/em>, something only introduced in\u00a0Horizons<\/em>. To ensure players can get the latest DLC,\u00a0Horizons<\/em> will be made free for all\u00a0Elite: Dangerous<\/em> players.<\/p>\n

To be clear, the base game is not going free to play.\u00a0Horizons<\/em> will simply be removed as a DLC and incorporated into the base game on October 27th. Anyone who purchases the base game after this point will have all the\u00a0Horizons<\/em> features available as well. They will have plenty of time to become familiar with\u00a0Horizon<\/em>‘s ins and outs by the time Odyssey<\/em> launches in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Players who have already purchased\u00a0Horizons<\/em> for money will not receive a refund. They will, however, receive a special Azure paint job for all ships. This is the only way to get the paint job.\u00a0Whether or not it will appear in the\u00a0Warhammer<\/em> RTS game made by Dangerous<\/em>‘ developers<\/a> is hard to say, but it would certainly be a nice Easter egg.<\/p>\n

Elite: Dangerous<\/strong><\/em> is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.<\/p>\n
