That said, both games are so high in quality it\u2019s hard to believe they weren\u2019t made by the same genius dev team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>SMW: Perfect Launch Title<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/super-mario-world-Top-Secret-Area.png' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No company knows how to perfect a launch title quite like Nintendo. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a simply outstanding display of what the Super Nintendo is capable of and the scope of the home console\u2019s potential. While <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMW <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is comparatively quite simple compared to other Super Nintendo games, it\u2019s a massive step up in terms of design sophistication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is there an overworld Mario can traverse, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actively saves your progress, keeps track of how many exits players have completed, and features copious amounts of hidden levels to find.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>DKC: Incredible Use Of SNES\u2019 Hardware<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/9-Donkey-Kong-Country.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the drawback of any launch title is that it won\u2019t realistically be using the hardware to the fullest. It tends to be only later in a console\u2019s life cycle that the more technologically impressive titles come out and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is no exception in this regard. If <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the potential of the SNES, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is its actualization. Between the Block Palaces, Star Road, all the hidden shortcuts scattered throughout the game, and the Special World, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">completely outdoes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when it comes to pure secrets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>DKC: Better Multiplayer<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Tree-Top-Town-from-Donkey-Kong-Country-for-Super-Nintendo.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to remember that multiplayer in 16-bit platformers usually amounted to players swapping the controller between each other. In the case of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one player would control Mario while the other would control Luigi, both players alternating between levels. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is comparatively far more ambitious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since both Donkey Kong and Diddy can be on-screen at the same time, multiplayer is now seamless &amp; actually cooperative. When the player controlling Donkey dies, the player controlling Diddy takes the reins. It\u2019s an incredibly creative approach to multiplayer and makes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DKC <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one of the best co-op games on the SNES.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>SMW: Level Design<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/super-mario-world-Special-World.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s level design is arguably the apex of 2D platformers. Every stage is meticulously designed, the main game finding an ebb &amp; flow for the difficulty curve that ensures the challenge is neither braindead nor too extreme. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMW<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only indulges in challenge when it can afford to\u2013 in optional stages. It\u2019s not that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s level design is poor (far from it,) but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is in a league of its own. A masterful blending of pacing, momentum, and thoughtful stage design.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>DKC: Boss Design<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/5-Donkey-Kong-Country.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t have bad boss design, but they\u2019re as simple as they are underwhelming compared to other bosses in the genre. Bowser himself is a fine final boss, but virtually every boss in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outdoes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMW<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s roster. Not only are bosses considerably harder with harder AI to keep track of, their attack patterns change over the course of battle and there\u2019s a larger than life quality to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DKC<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s sprite work that makes each boss fight an imposing challenge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>SMW: Air Tight Controls<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Super-Mario-World-Big-Bullet-Bill-SNES.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No other platformer franchise\u2013 2D or 3D\u2013 nails player control as masterfully, consistently, and near-effortlessly as Nintendo. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s controls are simply splendid. Of course, it should be kept in mind that Mario controls are designed for a much faster paced game whereas Donkey Kong\u2019s are suited for a slower gameplay loop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>DKC: Sound Design<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/7-Donkey-Kong-Country.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musically, atmospherically, and just artistically, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trilogy might very well have the best sound design on the Super Nintendo. For as silly as the franchise\u2019s image has become, the original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sought to set a specific mood with each level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stages are somber, almost melancholic, while settling on a style of sound that\u2019s true to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">jungle aesthetic.\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s sound design can almost be called cinematic, with direction whose main priority is to bolster gameplay. Several tracks are repeated, but never to the point where they lose their charm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>SMW: Pacing<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Super-Mario-World.png' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Above all else, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s key to success is pacing. There are little to no interruption to gameplay, each stage seamlessly transitions into the next, and players are almost always guaranteed to make some semblance of progress\u2013 either through the main game or by uncovering secrets. Even the levels themselves are perfectly paced, always giving players a generous timer that\u2019s never <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">too <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">generous when hunting for secrets. More importantly, levels prioritize non-stop gameplay &amp; movement, leading to a frenetic gameplay loop that can carry players all the way to Bowser\u2019s Castle in the flash of an eye.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>DKC: Art Direction<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Coral-Capers-from-Donkey-Kong-Country-for-Super-Nintendo-.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s art direction is downright gorgeous. While <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DKC2 &amp; 3 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are logical improvements in terms of graphical fidelity, the first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Donkey Kong Country <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is aesthetically quite mature. It never gets too outlandish, sticking to settings that are grounded in some degree of reality. As a result, the game\u2019s color palette isn\u2019t as bold or whimsical as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario World<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it\u2019s still quite vibrant.
