U.S. Representive of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota&#8217;s 5th congressional district<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ilhan Omar became the exception, earning hers when a fan artist drew her with one. She accepted the honor with a simple retweet.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memes rarely extend beyond their short shelf life as they make their rounds on social media, but Rep. Omar (D &#8211; Minn.) once again acknowledged the anime fans that tapped into her popularity during a moment of controversy. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/giant-gundam-china\/\">Omar is a favorite among progressive democrats<\/a> and when President Trump tweeted a video of her speeches interspersed with clips from the 9-11 terrorist attacks (Omar is Muslim) anime fans pitched in with a meme that stuck: \u201cDefend Ilhan and build her a Gundam.\u201d When artist Benjamin Sawyer honored the meme with a picture of Omar with a Gundam her\u00a0official Twitter account acknowledged it with a quote tweet of her own.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/life-size-gundam-testing-japan\/\">Life Size Gundam Now in Testing Mode<\/a> <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IlhanMN\/status\/1308519333145042946?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/netflix-dragons-dogma-anime-intro-trailer\/\">The quote tweet from her official account<\/a> earned more than 40,000 likes and 5,000 retweets affording the meme something it rarely gets &#8212; closure. This isn\u2019t the first time that Rep. Omar acknowledged the <em>Gundam<\/em> franchise. <em>Gundam<\/em> has recently been in the news with a 60-foot version of its\u00a0iconic mecha built in Yokohama coming to life. The large-scale model took its first steps and is now able to sit and even crouch. This accomplishment, achieved by the engineers at the Gundam Factory in Yokohama, was enough to earn the Congresswoman\u2019s praise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IlhanMN\/status\/1308185260321013762?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <em>Gundam<\/em> franchise has gone out of its way to try and inject a little bit of positivity into a year weighed down by a lot of turmoil and upheaval. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/bleach-returns-with-burn-the-witch-anime\/\">Sometimes it&#8217;s been through feats of science<\/a> like the massive Gundam being built and smaller gestures like <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/gundam-success-explained-video\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">calling upon the series&#8217; iconography<\/a> to spread a message of hope through a short video messages.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It makes sense that <em>Gundam<\/em> would be something Rep. Omar would support after taking a look at the themes that often run through the franchise. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/akira-r4k-remaster\/\">The Gundam and their pilots<\/a> are often agents of change, with the robots being at the root of political upheaval and change in a far-flung future. Rep.
