Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order<\/em> has near-singlehandedly restored fans’ faith in the future of\u00a0Star Wars<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>video games. Now, all eyes are on Respawn as they work on the forthcoming follow-up,\u00a0Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order 2<\/em><\/strong>, where\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>hopefully, the developer will correct one of the original game’s greatest narrative mistakes: the encounter with Darth Vader.<\/p>\n

The misstep is understandable. Vader is\u00a0a central pillar of Star Wars<\/em>. The events of the Skywalker\u00a0saga revolve around his character, and he is an icon for the entire intellectual property. Anyone can\u00a0conjure an image of the Empire’s imposing, black-clad enforcer with a simple imitation of his deliberate, mechanical breathing.\u00a0Unfortunately for long-running, multifaceted franchises, pillars can be reduced to crutches\u2014or crumble altogether\u2014when they are over-relied upon. Such is the nature of Vader’s “surprise” appearance at the end of\u00a0Jedi: Fallen Order<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n

To illustrate what went wrong, one\u00a0can compare\u00a0Fallen Order<\/em>‘s treatment of\u00a0Vader to his appearance at the end of\u00a0Rogue One<\/em>. The scene where Vader’s red lightsaber illuminates the shadowy corridor, with the Sith Lord proceeding to slaughter all the Rebel troops in his way is one of the character’s finest moments in all of Star Wars<\/em>. It establishes him as an implacable, game-ending threat, reinforcing what we know about the character’s power and history.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Vader’s arrival in\u00a0Fallen Order\u00a0<\/em>is messier. It is a predictable plot point which actually works against his gravitas. His abrupt arrival provides a rushed, easy\u00a0end to Trilla’s arc\u2014Cal has no time to mourn or reflect on her death because he\u00a0must flee for his life. The\u00a0more serious flaw, however, is that Cere and Cal manage to\u00a0escape without any serious consequences.\u00a0Admittedly, Cere\u00a0must dip\u00a0back into the Dark Side to manage it, but the series’ scariest dragon is still evaded.<\/p>\n

Since Cal has already escaped Vader, the threat he poses is diminished. And if Fallen Order 2<\/em> allows Cal to continue to grow more powerful<\/a> in the Force, that threat will continue to dwindle.\u00a0The scene shows\u00a0players that Vader can be beaten,\u00a0even though they also know it will never happen. After all, Cal and co. cannot settle their score with Vader since his ultimate fate is\u00a0determined in the films. Therefore, every subsequent encounter with\u00a0Vader\u00a0will be a frustrating, foregone conclusion to this effect.\u00a0So what can Respawn do?<\/p>\n

Assuming the\u00a0Fallen Order<\/em> sequel picks up\u00a0in the same era following\u00a0the first game’s conclusion, the best possible move would be to\u00a0have Vader delegate. Cal deserves an arch nemesis of his own, who poses a unique threat to his quest. And given the game’s open-ended conclusion, that threat could manifest in a variety of different ways.<\/p>\n

A new, original enemy who shares a personal connection with Cal\u00a0similar to Trilla’s connection with Cere would be\u00a0a solid choice, provided\u00a0the Fallen Order <\/em>series\u00a0sticks with him as the protagonist<\/a>. One interesting option would be to have Cal face off against a former Padawan comrade.\u00a0Fallen Order’<\/em>s\u00a0Taron Malicos offered us a glimpse of what\u00a0an evil Jedi survivor\u00a0looks like,\u00a0but a new character would not even necessarily need to be a full-on dark-sider, so much as somebody at cross purposes with whatever Cal is trying to do.<\/p>\n

Another option would be to re-canonize the concept of a “Wound in the Force,” and feature a more monstrous dark-sider like Knights of the Old Republic 2’s\u00a0<\/em>terrifying Darth Nihilus<\/a>. This would open the door to exploring the dark side beyond the purview of the Empire. Given the ever-growing number of Jedi who are known to have escaped Order 66, it seems inevitable that there would be more dark side practitioners with their own agendas as well.<\/p>\n

Respawn could also\u00a0appease fans’ desires for more\u00a0Fallen Order<\/em> cameos<\/a>. Vader isn’t Star Wars<\/em>‘ only\u00a0great villain, and Respawn has some intriguing options, including a few\u00a0characters from the franchise’s retconned Legends\u00a0canon. There have been whispers\u00a0of reviving Mara Jade, initial Hand of the Emperor and eventual wife of Legends’ canon Luke Skywalker.\u00a0Reintroducing the firebrand as a foe for Cal would be a crowd-pleasing move that gives the universe a number of exciting options.<\/p>\n

Another potential candidate would be a re-imagining of Darth Vader’s pupil, Galen Marek, from the de-canonized\u00a0Force Unleashed<\/em> franchise.\u00a0Galen, code-named Starkiller, could be purposefully groomed to take out Cal and his friends while Vader sees to other affairs. There is even a way that Respawn could make\u00a0The Force Unleashed<\/em>\u00a0games canonical again<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is interesting to note that both of these characters eventually turn to the light side of the Force. Neither Galen nor Mara would necessarily need to be redeemed or reformed at the end of their fight against Cal, however. Simply knowing that\u00a0their legacy portrayals\u00a0have the capacity to serve the light side of the Force could introduce more nuance and tension in their struggle against the crew of the Mantis.<\/p>\n

Other potential tempting options for an antagonist include Darth Maul, and Grand Admiral Thrawn, though these characters are beholden to the same drawbacks as Vader, and by extension, Palpatine. One day, Maul will presumably meet his end fighting his greatest rival, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Thrawn is busy contending with the Star Wars Rebels<\/em> crew for most of the Galactic Civil War. Cameos would be fine, but featuring\u00a0characters whose\u00a0fates are already tied to films or television as primary antagonists severely limit\u00a0Respawn’s\u00a0ability to provide\u00a0players with closure.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, falling back on Vader\u00a0or Sidious\u00a0would be the least adventurous moves that\u00a0Fallen Order 2<\/em> could make. Though almost nothing is known about Fallen Order 2 <\/em>to date, and\u00a0with no word on a release date for Fallen Order 2<\/em>, there is plenty of time to speculate.<\/p>\n

Eager players looking for clues may want to take the opportunity\u00a0to comb Fallen Order<\/em> for secrets and details players may have overlooked<\/a>. Respawn may have tricks up their sleeves that fans will never see coming.<\/p>\n

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Outcast 2<\/strong><\/em> is currently in development. A release date has yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
