Where <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/super-mario-64\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Super Mario 64 <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set the foundation for 3D gaming as we know it, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">codified its finer details. How games use stories, how they pace themselves, and the very nature of modern lock-on systems (think <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dark-souls\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dark Souls<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) wouldn\u2019t be possible had <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/legend-of-zelda\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not transitioned its series so masterfully into 3D. At the same time, <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/nintendo\">Shigeru Miyamoto<\/a> wasn\u2019t entirely finished with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-of-zelda-reasons-why-zelda-better-protagonist-than-link\/\">The Legend of Zelda: 10 Reasons Why Zelda Would Be A Better Protagonist Than Link<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OoT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s release, the game plan was to develop an add-on called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ocarina-of-time-glitches-escaping-kokiri-forest-early\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ura Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which would eventually release as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/gamecube\">Nintendo GameCube<\/a>. A remix akin to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda 1<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s 2nd Quest, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flips <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s dungeons on their head to offer franchise fans an even greater challenge\u2013 but does it actually improve on the original?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>OoT: Dungeon Design<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Water-Temple-OoT.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Shigeru Miyamoto first approached Eiji Aonuma with the idea of remixing dungeons for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ura Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Aonuma expressed disappointment at the prospect. In his mind, the development staff had already done their best work imaginable on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, rendering such an endeavor redundant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the final dungeons in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are unique enough where they make for a solid set in their own right, Aonuma\u2019s words ultimately ring true: the staff really did do their best work on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Not a single one of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MQ<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s dungeons outdoes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OoT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s in terms of sheer puzzle &amp; level design. They aren\u2019t bad, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s dungeons are in a league of their own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>MQ: Challenges Familiarity\u00a0<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Ocarina-of-Time.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Playing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a recipe for disaster. The game very intimately builds off of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OoT<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and outright challenges any familiarity players might feel playing through the revamped dungeons. Once simple puzzles are made considerably more complex, entire layouts are rearranged, and a few key puzzles require a level of out of the box thinking rarely seen in 3D <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a daunting challenge, but one genuinely meant for franchise masters. Jabu-Jabu is an especially odd experience in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MQ<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>OoT: Perfect Pacing<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Ganondorfs-Castle-From-Ocarina-Of-Time.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s greatest strength is pacing. Above all else, this is a game that knows how to use its time wisely. Exploration isn\u2019t directionless but players never have their hand held\u2013 even by Navi. The hardest puzzles are legitimate brainteasers, but they don\u2019t halt gameplay in its tracks like in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While this does mean <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t as challenging as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it moves at a brisker pace that makes the game\u2019s best qualities shine without ever lingering on any over negatives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>MQ: Mirror Mode<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Master-Quest.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is little more than a 2nd Quest. Which, to be fair, is more than most <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">games end up getting. This made it all the more surprising when <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s inclusion on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time 3D <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">came with some changes. The most obvious was the implementation of MIrror Mode, a reference to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twilight Princess<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 mirrored state in the game\u2019s Wii release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time-other-games-need-switch-ports\/\">Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time &amp; 9 Other Games In The Series That Need Switch Ports<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By mirroring the game, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest 3D <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">makes it so players can\u2019t rely on muscle memory anymore. While this can be disorienting at first, it helps in making <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feel more than just an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reskin, if only because of its mirrored geography.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>OoT: Sensical Puzzles<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Forest-Temple.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s puzzles are fun to solve, but quite a few are pure nonsense. Cows in Jabu-Jabu? Cute but dumb. The eye switch hidden in the Forest Temple\u2019s well? Genuinely clever, but completely unintuitive. It makes sense why <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opts to get as strange as it does\u2013 the expectation is that you\u2019ve played <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">beforehand\u2013\u00a0but it just doesn\u2019t compare to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s puzzles. Not only do most puzzles make sense with their settings, the game never asks anything of the player that doesn\u2019t make sense in context.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>MQ: Double Damage<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/The-Legend-of-Zelda-Ocarina-of-Time-Shadow-Temple.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alongside mirror mode, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest 3D <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doubles the damage of all enemies in the game. The original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is already more challenging than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">due to better enemy variety (more on that in just a bit,) but the double damage takes gameplay just that extra inch further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Double damage turns <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from a 2nd Quest into a genuine hard mode in every respect. In many respects, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the ideal rendition of Hero Mode\u2013\u00a0new dungeons, a mirrored overworld, and extra difficulty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>OoT: Gold Skulltula Quest<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Ocarina-of-Time-Spider.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are 100 Gold Skulltula hidden throughout Hyrule in both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with quite a few found within dungeons. As a result, half the Gold Skulltula questline is radically different between the two versions. Even though the quest has something of a reputation for its large Skulltula count, it\u2019s worth hunting them down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-64-longest-games\/\">10 Nintendo 64 Games That Take The Longest To Beat<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The entire point of the Gold Skulltula quest is to show players every nook &amp; cranny hidden throughout Hyrule. The reason you only need 50 for the Heart Piece is more a mercy than anything (think Korok Seeds capping out rewards in the 400s.) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s dungeon Skulltula tend to be harder to find with less the thrill of tracking them down due to comparatively worse level design.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>MQ: Better Combat\u00a0<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Iron-Knuckle.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a fantastic combat system that it unfortunately doesn\u2019t use all too well. Outside of mini-bosses, most enemies and boss fights don\u2019t require players to master the art of combat. This isn\u2019t the case for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which features far more aggressive enemy design from start to finish. Coupled with the double damage from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest 3D<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it\u2019s not unusual to Game Over inside the Deku Tree or Dodongo\u2019s Cavern. Iron Knuckles are especially dangerous, able to kill Link in just a few short strikes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>OoT: The Authentic Experience<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Like-Like-Ocarina-of-Time-Cropped-1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s just no getting around the fact that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the original and authentic experience\u2013 the way the game was always meant to be played. Every facet of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes together to create one of the most cohesive games in the medium, from the plotting to the gameplay loop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s never a dull moment, no puzzles that are out of place or too obtuse, and downright enviable pacing. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accomplishes what it needs to as a remix of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it was always being built in the shadow of one of the greatest games ever made.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>MQ: Bosses Are An Actual Threat<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Ocarina-Of-Time-Bosses-Twinrova.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s bosses are memorable, but most of them are also too easy for their own good. As the 3DS version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doubles damage, it goes without saying that boss fights are notably harder when playing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MQ3D<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The final battles against Ganondorf and Ganon are particularly dangerous this time around.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That said, even the original GameCube release of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Master Quest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offers harder bosses by virtue of featuring harder dungeons. What hurts <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s difficulty more than anything is how often Hearts or Fairies drop.
