Conan the Barbarian<\/em> has been the subject of multiple films, television, and video game projects<\/a> since debuting in the series of\u00a0fantasy stories by pulp fiction author\u00a0Robert E. Howard.\u00a0Decades after Arnold Schwarzenegger portrayed the\u00a0character in 1982’s Conan the Barbarian,\u00a0<\/em>the\u00a0sword and sorcery hero will return to the screen in a live-action television series being developed by Netflix<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Conan the Barbarian<\/em> series is the first project in a deal between Netflix<\/a> and Conan Properties International, the company owned by\u00a0Fredrik Malmberg’s Cabinet Entertainment. Under the terms of the deal, Netflix has the exclusive option to acquire the rights to\u00a0the library of written Conan<\/em> works to develop live-action and animated projects for film and television.<\/p>\n

Deadline reports Malmberg and\u00a0Mark Wheeler will serve as executive producers on the Conan<\/em> series through their Pathfinder Media. The search for a showrunner to pen scripts for the series and a director to helm episodes is currently underway. Netflix’s decision to put the Conan<\/em> series into the development is just the latest addition to the streaming service’s growling list of projects based on literary characters. Previously acquired IP include\u00a0Roald Dahl’s novels<\/a>, C. S. Lewis’\u00a0The Chronicles of Narnia <\/em>stories, <\/em>and Mark Millar’s\u00a0<\/em>Millarworld comics.<\/p>\n

Howard’s series of Conan the Barbarian<\/em> stories were first published in Weird Tales magazine in 1932 and followed the warrior’s exploits in the fictional time period known as the\u00a0Hyborian Age. In addition to the aforementioned\u00a0Schwarzenegger film<\/a> and its sequel,\u00a0Conan the Destroyer<\/i>, the character was the subject of a 2011 reboot in which Aquaman<\/em> star Jason Momoa portrayed the title role. The character would also be depicted on television in the animated shows\u00a0Conan the Adventurer\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Conan and the Young Warriors<\/em> while a live-action\u00a0Adventurer <\/i>series\u00a0would begin\u00a0a short-lived run in 1997.<\/p>\n

Considering the terms of Netflix’s deal with\u00a0Conan Properties International, the Conan<\/em> series could be the first\u00a0of multiple projects set in the same universe. While\u00a0Conan may not have as much of a screen presence as he did in the past, the character has proven to be popular in Marvel Comics<\/a> after the company regained the\u00a0comic publishing rights to the character.<\/p>\n

Now, the fan-casting for Conan will likely begin, setting up expectations for the role even before a showrunner has been selected. Still, it may be hard for fans of the character to imagine anyone besides Schwarzenegger in the iconic role.<\/p>\n

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s\u00a0Conan the Barbarian\u00a0<\/em>is now available on Netflix.<\/p>\n
