Cobra Kai<\/em>, a spin off of\u00a0The Karate Kid<\/em>, continues to be a rather popular show despite coming over thirty years after the original film. Originally released on YouTube Red, the series was acquired by Netflix, which will\u00a0release third season of the hit series in 2021. Netflix has got to be happy<\/a> with their investment too, as\u00a0Cobra Kai,\u00a0<\/em>after being put onto Netflix, dominated the streaming charts from August 31st to September 6th, taking the number one spot.<\/p>\n

Over that one week period, the show was streamed for about 2.2 billion minutes total, which was almost twice the number 2 spot, which came in at 1.4 billion minutes of\u00a0Lucifer<\/em>. Netflix wasn’t completely uncontested however<\/a>, as\u00a0Amazon’s The Boys<\/em> managed to crack the top ten for the first time since Nielsen started reporting streaming data alongside traditional television statistics. Overall\u00a0The Boys<\/em> racked up a clean 891 million streaming minutes.<\/p>\n

Interestingly,\u00a0Mulan<\/em> also barely squeaked in at the number 10 spot, tallying 525 million minutes on the charts. It’s still too early to say whether or not the film was a success, or if it lived up to Disney’s expectations however. The company has yet to release any sort of official viewing or purchase statistics, but claims it will share more insights at its next quarterly earnings call.Of course, Mulan cost an extra $30 on top of the Disney+ subscription fee, so it’s not terribly surprising it fared worse than “free” shows.\u00a0 The film will also likely get a boost when it drops to $7 on Disney+<\/a>, until it is finally made free to all subscribers in early December.<\/p>\n

It’s worth noting that these statistics don’t paint a complete picture of the streaming landscape. Currently Nielsen only tracks the stats for services in the United States, and even then, it doesn’t track every service. From the week tracked, other notable entries include shows like\u00a0The Legend of Korra<\/em> and\u00a0Shameless<\/em>, as well as a variety of evergreen shows like\u00a0The Office\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0Criminal Minds<\/em>. It’s also important to remember that some shows are available all at once, while others, like The Boys<\/em>, come out on a weekly schedule. While the data may not be perfect, it is a useful indicator of overall streaming trends, especially for a sector of media that up to this point has been painfully lacking in hard data.<\/p>\n
