Whilst this is fantastic for the current generation of gamers, it&#8217;s perhaps those old enough to remember the original titles who benefit the most. Some fans may have been waiting decades to see their favorite titles return and so it can often be something of a dream come true. Not all fans are so lucky though.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/highest-grossing-games-never-got-a-sequel\/\">The 10 Highest-Grossing Games That Never Got A Sequel<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Buried deep within gaming&#8217;s past lie a host of fantastic titles just waiting to resurface. Unfortunately, however, whilst the desire to see them return is often there from fans, the same is not always the case when it comes to developers and publishers. As the years pass by, it can become increasingly difficult for fans to hold on to the hope that the\u00a0sequels they so desperately crave will ever materialize.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Vagrant Story<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-vagrant-story.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Boasting a\u00a0Metacritic rating of 92, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/vagrant-story\/\"><em>Vagrant Story<\/em><\/a> is one of the highest-rated RPGs released on the PlayStation.\u00a0The game\u00a0also garnered a fairly sizeable fanbase thanks, in no small part, to its fantastic story and gameplay. Unfortunately, however, sales figures\u00a0were unable to mirror the game&#8217;s acclaim and\u00a0it was overshadowed by\u00a0larger IPs.<\/p>\n<p>Two decades later, and perhaps the biggest obstacles standing in the way of a sequel aren&#8217;t budgetary concerns or the lack of a market for such a game, but the sheer volume of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/square-enix-final-fantasy-7-remake-games\/\">huge RPG\u00a0franchises owned by\u00a0Square Enix<\/a>. With <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/final-fantasy\/\"><em>Final Fantasy<\/em><\/a>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/kingdom-hearts\/\">Kingdom Hearts<\/a>,<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dragon-quest\/\"><em>Dragon Quest<\/em><\/a>\u00a0to name just a few, the incentive to work on a sequel to <em>Vagrant Story<\/em> rather than cranking out a new <em>Final Fantasy<\/em> title likely just isn&#8217;t there.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>The Simpsons: Hit &amp; Run<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-the-simpsons-hit-and-run.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>The Simpsons: Hit &amp; Run<\/em> was developed by Radical Entertainment and was the sequel to the hugely popular <em>Road Rage<\/em>. Inspired by the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/grand-theft-auto\/\"><em>GTA<\/em><\/a> series, the titles allow fans to cause mischief as they drive their way around a virtual Springfield. Combining elements from both the most popular animated show and the most popular video game series of the time was always going to lead to a successful product. Consequently, a third game seemed somewhat inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>As it happens, a sequel to <em>Hit &amp; Run<\/em>\u00a0was actually in development at one stage. Unfortunately, though, the project was canceled\u00a0after EA obtained the exclusive rights to produce Simpsons video games in 2005. EA did release a number of games in the following years, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-simpsons-best-games-ranked\/\">none of them were able to come close<\/a> to matching the excellence delivered by Radical&#8217;s earlier Simpsons titles.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Bully<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-bully.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The team at Rockstar\u00a0doesn&#8217;t publish a lot of games. When they do though, they&#8217;re usually exceptional &#8211; and the 2006 title <em>Bully<\/em> is no exception. Unfortunately, it&#8217;s a title that the developer has failed to revisit in spite of the game&#8217;s critical and commercial success.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-rockstar-arent-gta-or-red-dead\/\">10 Best Rockstar Games That Aren&#8217;t GTA (Or Red Dead)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When creating <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/bully\/\"><em>Bully<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/rockstar-games\/\"><em>Rockstar<\/em><\/a> played around with\u00a0a lot of new ideas and the result was an experience unlike any other.\u00a0Most importantly perhaps, it showed gamers that there was more to\u00a0Rockstar than just <em>Grand Theft Auto<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Dragon&#8217;s Dogma<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-dragons-dogma.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/dragons-dogma\/\"><em>Dragon&#8217;s Dogma<\/em><\/a> didn&#8217;t sell or\u00a0review particularly well when it released back in 2012. That hasn&#8217;t stopped it from garnering a strong and vocal fanbase\u00a0though. Whilst those fans have themselves extended the lifespan of the game <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-mods-dragons-dogma\/\">through\u00a0the creation of mods<\/a>, what they really want is a sequel. Thankfully, there is some cause for optimism.<\/p>\n<p>The game&#8217;s director Hideaki Itsuno has expressed his desire to revisit the <em>Dragon&#8217;s Dogma<\/em> world on several occasions. There&#8217;s also the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/dragons-dogma-netflix-best-worst-things\/\">recently released Dragon&#8217;s Dogma Netflix show<\/a> which has helped to reignited interest in the series.\u00a0With momentum growing, there&#8217;s every possibility that fans won&#8217;t have to wait too much longer.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Skies Of Arcadia<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-skies-of-arcadia.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Skies of Arcadia<\/em> rarely features in conversations about the best RPGs of all time, but it really should. Released in the year 2000 on the <em>Sega Dreamcast<\/em>, Skies was a traditional JRPG with a heavy focus on exploration.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/role-playing-games-jrpgs-forgotten-deserve-reboot\/\">10 Forgotten JRPGs That Deserve A Reboot<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the demise of the Dreamcast, the game was ported to the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/gamecube\/\">Nintendo GameCube<\/a> where it achieved reasonable success, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ps2\/\">PS2 <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/pc\/\">PC<\/a> releases were canceled. Fans have been hoping for a sequel or remake for quite some time now and with other dormant Sega IPs like <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/tag\/shenmue\/\"><em>Shenmue<\/em><\/a>, <em>Streets of Rage,<\/em> and <em>Panzer Dragoon<\/em> all receiving attention in recent years, all hope is not yet lost for those hoping to take to the skies once more.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Escape From Monkey Island<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-escape-from-monkey-island.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/lucas-arts\/\">LucasArts<\/a> team were the undisputed kings of point and click adventure games back in the late &#8217;80s and early &#8217;90s. With games like <em>Full Throttle<\/em>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/grim-fandango\/\">Grim Fandango<\/a>,<\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/day-of-the-tentacle\/\"><em>Day of the Tentacle<\/em><\/a>, they boast a catalog of games that any developer would be envious of. The jewel in their crown however is the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-secret-of-monkey-island\/\"><em>Monkey Island<\/em><\/a> series.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0games combined humor and puzzle-solving to create some of the best adventure games ever made. Unfortunately though, with the license\u00a0to the\u00a0series currently in the hands of <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/disney\/\">Disney<\/a>, it doesn&#8217;t seem likely that fans will be getting a new <em>Monkey Island<\/em> game any time soon. Series creator Ron Gilbert did publicly offer to buy the license back in 2018, but despite his offer and a well-supported petition urging Disney to hand it over, the series seems destined to remain dormant for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Chrono\u00a0Trigger<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-chrono-trigger.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>According to producer\u00a0Hiromichi Tanaka,\u00a0<em>Chrono Cross<\/em> was never intended to serve as a direct sequel to <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/chrono-trigger\/\"><em>Chrono Trigger<\/em><\/a>. The game instead looked to explore different aspects of the larger <em>Chrono Trigger<\/em> world. This shows, as with an entirely new cast of characters and a very different story,\u00a0it&#8217;s difficult to draw too many comparisons between\u00a0the two games.<\/p>\n<p>The continuation of Chrono&#8217;s story is something that fans have been longing for quite some time now. It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-nintendo-snes-role-playing-games-rpgs-best\/\">one of the best RPGs ever made<\/a> and undoubtedly deserves the opportunity to captivate a new generation. As with other titles from Square&#8217;s past, however, it is difficult to see the developer opting to revitalize an older franchise when there are so many active and successful series for them to work on.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Banjo Kazooie 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-banjo-kazooie-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Many people regard the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/banjo-kazooie\/\"><em>Banjo Kazooie<\/em><\/a> games as being two of the best 3D platformers of the &#8217;90s. Along with games like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/super-mario-64\/\">Super Mario 64<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ocarina-of-time\/\"><em>Ocarina of Time<\/em><\/a>, they helped to set the standard for the genre. After the release of the second game in the series then, a <em>Banjo Threeie<\/em> seemed somewhat inevitable, but <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/banjo-threeie-canceled-rare-games\/\">it failed to materialize<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/rare\/\">Rare<\/a> currently owned by <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/microsoft\/\">Microsoft<\/a> and many of the original development team has left the company, a third Banjo game doesn&#8217;t seem too likely now.\u00a0Thankfully though fans have\u00a0the series&#8217; spiritual successor <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/yooka-laylee\/\"><em>Yooka-Laylee<\/em><\/a> to fill the void.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Silent Hill: Downpour<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-silent-hill-downpour.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>If one were to ask gamers to name a company that neglects its franchises, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/konami\/\">Konami<\/a> would likely be a popular answer. With the company has shifted its focus towards Japan&#8217;s lucrative Pachinko market, many of the best video game IPs from the last few decades have been left to rot.\u00a0Despite this, fans of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/silent-hill\/\"><em>Silent Hill<\/em><\/a> series haven&#8217;t given up hope.<\/p>\n<p>This hope was amplified back in 2014 when\u00a0<em>P.T.<\/em> appeared as a free download on the Playstation Network. The short game served as an interactive teaser for a new <em>Silent Hill<\/em> title and was very well received. Unfortunately, however, a final game <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/hideo-kojima-silent-hills-development\/\">never saw the light of day<\/a>. Rumors of a new <em>Silent Hill<\/em> title have been <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/silent-hill-ps5-exclusive-reveal-when\/\">popping up fairly regularly<\/a> since then, but as of the moment, there has been no official confirmation that a new\u00a0title is in development.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Half-Life 2: Episode 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/seq-half-life-2-episode-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Back before <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/steam\/\">Steam<\/a> was a thing, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/valve\/\">Valve<\/a> created some of the industry&#8217;s best games. The <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/half-life\/\"><em>Half-Life<\/em><\/a> series is seen by many as being their greatest achievement in this regard. Although the\u00a0fantastic VR title\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/half-life-alyx\/\"><em>Half-Life: Alyx<\/em><\/a> did revisit the Half-Life universe earlier this year, it didn&#8217;t continue Freeman&#8217;s story. Unfortunately for fans, there&#8217;s perhaps little incentive for Valve to\u00a0do so anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>Given the amount of hype that a <em>Half-Life 3<\/em> announcement would generate, expectations for the title would be sky-high. Anything less than perfect would likely be seen as a failure by fans.
