Contrary to the common pushback the timeline received as Nintendo caving to audience demands, the fact of the matter is that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/legend-of-zelda\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has always been very conscious about its lore, its story, and the themes the franchise was pushing. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s manual is a dive into Hylian mythology that\u2019s still relevant to the franchise\u2019s storytelling today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/wind-waker-tower-of-gods-step-by-step-guide\/\">The Wind Waker: A Step By Step Guide To The Tower Of Gods<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also necessary to recognize that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/the-legend-of-zelda\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has a timeline in the most basic of senses, as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda II: The Adventure of Link <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was developed as a direct narrative sequel to the original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legend of Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an explicit prequel. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s timeline is very much real and it\u2019s evolved considerably since the Hyrule Fantasy originated back in 1986.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>The Triforce Of The Gods<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Triforce.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Triforce has always been an important part of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s iconography, the first two NES games make use of Christian imagery alongside the Triforce. Hyrule as originally depicted was a traditional fantasy setting with a Judeo-Christian slant. It\u2019s to be expected of the era, but it also made the transition into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more notable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Titled <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Triforce of the Gods <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Japan, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">completely redefined <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s lore. Not only were all visual references to Christianity completely removed, Hyrule was established as a polytheistic setting with multiple Gods (who would later be clarified as Goddesses.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>A Link To The Past<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/A-Link-to-the-Past-Master-Sword-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More notable than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recontextualizing the series\u2019 lore was the game taking a step backwards in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s chronology. The original <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Adventure of Link <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both star the same Link, the sequel set roughly three years after the first. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">takes place centuries early, this Link an ancestor of the eventual Hero of Hyrule. As a prequel, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">set an important precedent for the series\u2019 timeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>The Imprisoning Split<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Ocarina-of-Time-.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main events detailed in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s backstory is the Imprisoning War, which <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was originally intended to focus on. Instead of focusing on the Imprisoning War, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tells an intimate story about the passage of time that ends with Link cast out from the future, alone in a past that isn\u2019t truly his. More impactfully, it\u2019s this event that resulted in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Legend of Zelda<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s timeline splitting.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>The Legendary Hero\u2019s Adventures<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Links-Awakening-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average Link only ever stars in a maximum of two games, with quite a few relegated to a single game. This isn\u2019t the case for the Legendary Hero, the main character of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link\u2019s Awakening<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oracle <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">duology. Miyamoto famously said <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link\u2019s Awakening <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was an adventure any Link who\u2019s defeated Ganon could experience, but it explicitly references <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s imagery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, both <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oracle <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">games reference <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link\u2019s Awakening <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in subtle ways. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oracle of Seasons <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">features Marin\u2013\u00a0a potential influence on how Link interprets Marin\u2013 while <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oracle of Ages <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sets up why Link writes on all his equipment come <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link\u2019s Awakening<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. More importantly, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oracle <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">games end with Link setting sail, mirroring the intro of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Link\u2019s Awakening<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That said, the Legendary Hero is now an anomaly. It\u2019s unlikely any other Link will get four whole games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>The Saga Of The Four Sword<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/The-Legend-of-Zelda-Four-Swords-Adventures-Cropped.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There aren\u2019t many story arcs running through the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">timeline other than the mainline games featuring Link, Zelda, &amp; Ganon in tandem, but that just makes the existence of the Four Swords narrative all the more compelling. In a timeline that has so far chronicled a single epic, it\u2019s endearing that three games pivot to tell their own tales.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four Swords<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four Swords Adventures<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Minish Cap <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggle to fit into the timeline as neatly as the other titles, but they don\u2019t create any jarring continuity errors either. They\u2019re perhaps better designated as spin-off games, but it\u2019s important the Hyrule\u2019s history not solely center on Ganon or the Master Sword. Vaati and the Four Sword are a familiar, but welcome, bit of variety.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Hyrule Washed Away<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/wind-waker-link-angry.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nintendo didn\u2019t pull the split timeline out of thin air and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s ending credits showcase very clearly how the timeline works. There\u2019s the timeline Link left behind\u2013 where everyone was celebrating in\u2013 and there\u2019s the timeline Link was sent to\u2013 where the rest of the ending and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Majora\u2019s Mask <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take place.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Wind Waker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decides to put this timeline split to good use by adding some serious consequences to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s ending. With Link gone, there\u2019s no one to stop Ganon when he resurrects. The Goddesses have no choice but to flood Hyrule, washing away the kingdom and giving the Adult Timeline a dark tone in spite of its colorful aesthetic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>The Fallen Timeline<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Zelda-II.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reveal that there were actually three timelines\u2013\u00a0not two\u2013 came as something of a shock for fans of the franchise, but it was in many ways to reconcile the existence of the pre-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">games. By not adapting the Imprisoning War, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">left a narrative gap that was meant to lead into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/legend-of-zelda-ocarina-of-time-other-games-need-switch-ports\/\">Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time &amp; 9 Other Games In The Series That Need Switch Ports<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hyrule Historia rationalizes that a previously unmentioned third timeline exists where Link was killed, leading directly into <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link to the Past<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There\u2019s nothing in-game to indicate where this split happens or why, but Link\u2019s dream at the start of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocarina of Time <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does show him being killed by Ganondorf.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Reincarnation Blues<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/skyward-sword-art.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyward Sword <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">takes the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">franchise back to the very beginning in order to recontextualize the series\u2019 main players. Link and Zelda are now key players in a game of divine chess between Hylia and Demise, destined to reincarnate through time in order to confront the spirit of Malice, often Ganon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hylia herself is shaping up to be an incredibly important player in the series\u2019 lore. A matriarch of sorts for the Golden Goddess, Hylia orchestrates the main events of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/skyward-sword\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skyward Sword <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and her iconography appears quite frequently throughout <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breath of the Wild<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Hylia will likely have the role the Golden Goddesses used to play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Parallel Universes &amp; You<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/a-link-between-worlds-Princess-hilda-dress-staff-purple-eyeshadow-lipstick.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Link Between Worlds <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">might be a handheld installment, but it makes some massive revelations about the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">universe. Beyond there being alternate worlds (often conveyed through the dual world mechanic,) that are straight up parallel universes. Beneath Hyrule is Lorule, a land that looks like the Dark World but very much isn\u2019t. Not only is Lorule a direct mirror to Hyrule, it once had its own Triforce that was corrupted with time. The lore implications of there being a second Triforce at all is extremely significant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>10,000 Years Of History<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Legend-of-Zelda-Breath-of-the-Wild-Ganon.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s at least 10,000 years of history unaccounted for leading up to the events of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/breath-of-the-wild\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breath of the Wild<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While Nintendo has used this as a shield to avoid clarifying where in the timeline <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BotW <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">falls, all signs point to the game being set in the Fallen Timeline. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breath of the Wild <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shares several key similarities with the Fallen Timeline games: a Master Sword in the Lost Woods, a focus on pure gameplay, and a Hyrule that\u2019s already past its prime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More importantly, it\u2019s said in-game that both Ruto and Nabooru once challenged Ganon, which they would have done in the Fallen Timeline.
