These are the games that stay with fans long after they\u00a0play them once, twice, or however many times.<\/p>\n

What makes a game good though? Is it the art direction? Perhaps it is the characters or the mechanics. Different fans have different rubrics, but Metacritic has its own scoring system, too. Though the two don’t often line-up, a game with a great Metacritic score will often provide a unique gaming experience.<\/p>\n

With the market flooded with AAA, indie, and one-person-made games these days, it can be difficult for gamers to sift through to find what they really want to play. For gaming veterans, they might just have forgotten about some of the classics having made space in their brains for newer experiences like\u00a0Death Stranding<\/em>,\u00a0Horizon Zero Dawn<\/em>, or\u00a0Hades<\/em><\/a> — the latest darling of the gaming community.<\/p>\n

But these games are all but certified fried gold with scores above 95 out of 100 on Metacritic. Though no game has a perfect score yet, one game comes close with the ultimate score of 99. Read on to find out which games ranked the highest, their release dates and platforms, and why fans consistently flock to them.<\/p>\n

32 <\/span>GTA Double Pack: GTA III And Vice City – 96<\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Grand Theft Auto Double Pack<\/em> first released for Xbox on October 31, 2003. It contained a double whammy of\u00a0Grand Theft Auto III<\/em> and\u00a0Grand Theft Auto: Vice City<\/a><\/em>. Fans could flip from terrorizing the seedy streets of Liberty City to cruising palm tree-laden streets\u00a0to the sweet jams of Vice City with ease earning this title a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 8.<\/p>\n

31 <\/span>Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty – 96<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Though the timeline of the games can be confusing, the\u00a0Metal Gear<\/em> series retains many die-hard fans for good reason.\u00a0Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty<\/em> follows Solid Snake and Raiden, a dark horse character some fans love and some fans despise. Kojima’s zany, but irresistible storytelling and the series’ unique mechanics keep gamers\u00a0coming back for more.\u00a0The game released originally for PS2 on November 12, 2001, and has a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 8.8.<\/p>\n

30 <\/span>Bioshock – 96<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

This game set the tone for unique FPS experiences once it launched for PC on August 21, 2007. The iconic Art-Deco aesthetics paired with the creepiness of an abandoned paradise known as “Rapture” stalked by intimidating Big Daddys and bloodthirsty genetic slug\/human hybrids\u00a0called “Little Sisters”. Bioshock<\/em>\u00a0holds up to this day with a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 8.6. Curiously, the Xbox 360 version of the game has a lower user score of 8.2.<\/p>\n

For many gamers growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s, Gran Turismo<\/em>\u00a0was the quintessential at-home racing game next to Twisted Metal<\/em>. It originally released for PS1 on April 30, 1998. The faithful recreations of racing cars featured classics, racing, and kitted out cars for use across\u00a011 environments. It retains a user score of 8.6 with a Metascore of 96.<\/p>\n

The Resident Evil 4<\/em>\u00a0remake is still a bit up in the air, but fans of the series continue to push for it. After all, the game has a Metascore of 96 with a user score of 9 on PS2 — the same as\u00a0Wind Waker<\/em>. Pretty boy cop Leon S. Kennedy of the Raccoon City Police is no longer a rookie. The game starts 6 years after the city’s destruction and the Umbrella Corporation has been destroyed. But Leon still has to take on all-new scary zombies and monsters. The Nintendo Gamecube version of the game scores a bit higher with users with a score of 9.2 and the same Metascore.<\/p>\n

26 <\/span>Half-Life – 96<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Half-Life<\/em> was the first game for many people that truly turned them into video game fans. It, too, has a Metascore of 96 with a user score of 9. Since its original launch for PC on November 19, 1998, there have been countless mods, fan creations, and headcrab plushies created. Not only did the game introduce a unique style of intense action, but it also incorporated technology in a way that encouraged players to think more about the actions they took rather than just hack, slash, and shoot.<\/p>\n

25 <\/span>Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – 96<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It’s hard to believe that this game originally debuted on November 11, 2011, for the Xbox 360. With many re-releases, mods, and even a VR version,\u00a0The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim<\/em> remains an epic contender in the gaming community. With Microsoft having just purchased<\/a>\u00a0Bethesda and only a brief teaser for the next game in the series, fans may have to be content with\u00a0Skyrim<\/em> for the time being. It has a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 8.6.<\/p>\n

24 <\/span>The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess – 96<\/h2>\n

Released for both Nintendo Gamecube and Wii, the December 11, 2006 launch of\u00a0The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess<\/em>\u00a0created a rift regarding how much fans enjoyed the art direction, tone, and world design vs. the poor Wii motion controls. Despite that, the game maintains a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 8.9 for the Nintendo Gamecube version. For some fans of the series,\u00a0Mass Effect 2<\/em> stands out as the best one of the original trilogy. Stellar companions like Legion, Mordin Solus (cry every time), and Tali Zorah Vas Normandy (n\u00e9e nar Rayya) enrich the lively universe set up in the first game and the Paragon\/Renegade system really comes into its own as Shepard romps around space to uncover the mystery behind the Collectors. Released\u00a0for\u00a0the Xbox 360 on January 16, 2010, the game maintains a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 8.9.<\/p>\n

To fight the ancient force feeding on powerful warriors, fighters have to lure it out in a competition of their own. The night is dark and full of terrors and all of them\u00a0were imprisoned at Arkham Asylum.\u00a0Batman: Arkham City<\/em> sees our fated hero Batman battling his way through former inmates at the fabled Gotham facility in their new “home” Arkham City. Fan favorites like The Joker, Catwoman, and Robin make appearances along with Oracle, The Riddler, and more. It has a user score of 8.8 and a Metascore of 96.<\/span><\/p>\n

20 <\/span>The Orange Box – 96<\/h2>\n

Released in 2016<\/a> for Xbox One,\u00a0The Orange Box<\/em> launched concurrently for PC and Xbox 360 on October 10, 2007. But the user scores for both versions differ with the PC taking the higher 9.2 over the 360’s 8.8. The collection of games from Valve include\u00a0Team Fortress 2<\/em>,\u00a0Half-Life 2<\/em> (episodes 1 and 2), and\u00a0Portal<\/em>. Both platform versions have the same Metascore of 96.<\/p>\n

19 <\/span>Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – 96<\/h2>\n

Nathan Drake got into many, many scraps before Tom Holland<\/a> got the option to portray him in film. Though not the first in the franchise,\u00a0Uncharted 2 Among Thieves<\/em> ranks high with a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 8.8. This game sharpened the series’ knack for puzzles, exciting gunplay, and unique environments. Fans hope to see a successful film adaption, but that sadly won’t include Nathan Fillion it seems.<\/p>\n

18 <\/span>GoldenEye 007 – 96<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Though the game may seem very dated by today’s standards,\u00a0GoldenEye 007<\/em> set the bar when it initially released for the Nintendo 64 on August 25, 1997.\u00a0Featuring 12 3D interactive environments, players could look and shoot in pretty much any direction. Next to Quake<\/em>, there may not be as iconic a console shooter game out there before the year 2000. Also, who knew David Harbour was in this game?<\/p>\n

17 <\/span>Half-Life 2 – 96<\/h2>\n

Fans of the\u00a0Half-Lif<\/em>e<\/em> series will tell you: nothing beats the gravity gun. Valve’s epic hit launched for PC on November 16, 2004\u00a0and was later named Metacritic’s PC Game of the Year for 2004. The same aspects that made the first game fantastic got amped up to 11 in the sequel episodes. Though\u00a0Half-Life: Alyx<\/em><\/a> came out recently, fans yearn for a true\u00a0Half-Life 3<\/em>. The game has maintained a Metascore of 96 and a user score of 9.1 in its long life.<\/p>\n

16 <\/span>NFL 2K1 – 97<\/h2>\n

This ain’t the average\u00a0Madden<\/em> game that gets pumped out every year boys. But\u00a0NFL 2K1<\/em>, published by Sega for the Dreamcast with a release date of September 7, 2000, sought to improve on the previous year’s game all the same.\u00a0Despite its age, this game paved the way for future sports games along with the\u00a0FIFA<\/em> series. With some issues, users rated it lower with a score of 6.4, but Metacritic awarded the game a Metascore of 97 for its innovation in the genre.<\/p>\n

15 <\/span>Halo: Combat Evolved – 97<\/h2>\n

The game that started it all,\u00a0Halo: Combat Evolved<\/em> sparked a revolution in the FPS world with its RPG element and addicting gunplay. It originally debuted on the original Xbox on November 14, 2001, and fans can play the beautifully remastered version of it in the\u00a0Halo: Master Chief Collection<\/em><\/a>. The game aged remarkably well, making its Metascore of 97 and user score of 8.5 well-earned.<\/p>\n

Mario’s latest adventure dazzled fans with thoughtful puzzles, a surprisingly open world, and plenty of sweet outfits. Releasing for the Nintendo Switch on October 27, 2017,\u00a0Super Mario Odyssey<\/em> once again follows Mario on his quest to save Princess Peach from Bowser. But this time, he has the help of a magical, sentient…hat? Fans lauded its sandbox-style since the last games to have something similar were\u00a0Super Mario Sunshine<\/em> and\u00a0Super Mario 64<\/em>. The game has a Metascore of 97 and a user score of 8.9.<\/p>\n

13 <\/span>Grand Theft Auto III – 97<\/h2>\n

Those ultra baggy pants, leather jacket, and chip-on-his-shoulder countenance can only mean one thing: that’s a\u00a0GTA<\/em> protagonist. Rockstar released the third game in the series for PS2 on October 22, 2001, to much acclaim. It included 3 hours of music, more than 50 vehicles, a complete 3D city, and tons of weapons for wreaking havoc on Liberty City. Users gave it a score of 8.4 while it earned a Metascore of 97.<\/p>\n

12 <\/span>Metroid Prime – 97<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Samus Aran remains one of the most popular and oldest characters in existence.\u00a0Metroid Prime<\/em> debuted for the Nintendo Gamecube on November 17, 2002 to much excitement from fans. In it, Samus is investigating ruined walls across Tallon IV, but the player views things through her helmet display including various information bits like ammunition levels. As another solid entry in the timeless franchise, this game earned a Metascore of 97 and a user score of 9.2.<\/p>\n

11 <\/span>Grand Theft Auto V – 97<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Aside from\u00a0Final Fantasy<\/em> games and\u00a0Skyrim<\/em>,\u00a0Grand Theft Auto V<\/em> has to be one of the most re-released games in history. Moreover, it released on many platforms, only coming to PC last. In fact, the game debuted on September 17, 2013, for PS3 and Xbox 360. Feel old yet? Both of the original console releases have user scores of 8.3 while the Xbox One got a 7.8 and the PS4 has an 8.4. Oddly, the console Metascores are 97 vs. the PC version’s 96.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Red Dead Redemption 2 – 97<\/h2>\n

Nobody endeared themselves to gamers quite so quickly as did Arthur Morgan — the main character in Rockstar’s\u00a0Red Dead Redemption 2<\/em>. This pre-sequel to the original\u00a0Red Dead Redemption<\/em> debuted for Xbox One and PS4 on October 26, 2018, to rabid fans. Players could explore a lush open world in turn-of-the-20th-century America as a member of a group of outlaws. The cinematic, slow nature of the game enveloped players, forming a strong attachment to the realistic characters and beautiful scenery. Metacritic gave the game a 97 out of 100 and users gave the game a score of 8.4 on PS4 and 7.9 on Xbox One.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Perfect Dark – 97<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Though possibly considered kitschy by today’s standards,\u00a0Perfect Dark<\/em> paved the way for many similar games after is Nintendo 64 debut on May 22, 2000. The game follows Joanna Dark, an agent for the Carrington Institute, as she investigates technological breakthroughs and what they might mean for the future of mankind. The game featured a co-op mode, a deathmatch option with bots, and other multiplayer options. Developer Rare also said the game was a spiritual successor to\u00a0GoldEye 007<\/em>, another game on this list. For its the ahead-of-its-time essence, the game maintains a Metascore of 97 and a user score of 8.9.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 – 97<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Released for the PS2 on October 28, 2001,\u00a0Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3<\/em> upped the stakes from the last game with the ability to challenge up to four friends online or on LAN in competitions. Activision and Neversoft included Graffiti and Trick Attack modes for variation. It also added the trick “The Revert” which enabled players to have much longer combos than before. The game earned a Metascore of 97 with a user score of 7.6.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild – 97<\/h2>\n

Already on this list once,\u00a0Breath of the Wild<\/em> comes in again with a higher Metascore of 97 and a user score of 8.6 for the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Though the next installment is a way off, fans await\u00a0Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity<\/em> that releases on November 20, 2020, to get their\u00a0Zelda<\/em> fixes.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>Super Mario Galaxy 2 – 97<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Snubbed in the recent 3D collection release of games,\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy 2<\/em><\/a> still retains a high Metascore of 97 and a user score of 9.1 — higher than that of the previous game in the series. It picks back up with galaxy-hopping Mario, adding Yoshi to the mix as a sometimes partner who can, like in other games, use his tongue for item grabbing and then spit them at enemies, as well. It released for the Wii on May 23, 2010.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Super Mario Galaxy – 97<\/h2>\n

Metacritic named\u00a0Super Mario Galaxy<\/em> its Game of the Year in 2007 when it released for the Nintendo Wii. The game marked a rare departure for the series from its relatively land-bound nature to seeing Mario go into space. Some fans complained about the movement in the game, but it remains a fan-favorite with a user score of 9 and a Metascore of 97. Fans can also play on the Nintendo Switch now as part of the\u00a0Super Mario 3D All-Stars<\/a><\/em> collection.<\/p>\n

Deemed Metacritic’s 2008 Xbox 360 Game of the Year,\u00a0Grand Theft Auto<\/em>\u00a0IV<\/em><\/a> follows Niko Belic, a European immigrant hoping to escape his past, and his cousin Roman who wants monetary success. Unfortunately, Liberty City’s criminal world sinks their teeth into the pair and they soon find themselves entangled with the Russian mob. Originally released on April 29, 2008, for the Xbox 360, the game holds a Metascore of 98 with a user score of 7.9.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 – 98<\/h2>\n

Among only a few games that repeat in the list of video games scored over 95 on Metacritic,\u00a0Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2<\/em> remains a classic. Originally released for PS1 on September 20, 2000, the game featured a custom skate park builders complete with a real-time 3D park editor. Players could choose from single-player, free skate, or career modes playing as Tony Hawk, one of 12 other pro skaters, or their own custom person. Though the game has a lower user score of 6.1, Metacritic gave it a 98 overall.<\/p>\n

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time<\/a><\/em> is, hands down, one of the most amazing games ever created. From the character design to the world itself and the story, this game transformed many people into gamers, as well as writers, artists, and developers. The game follows Link as he travels through time to undo Ganondorf’s poisoning of Hyrule and the Triforce. It has the highest score on Metacritic of any game with 99 out of 100. Curiously, however, it only has a user score of 9.1.<\/p>\n
