The open world RPG has seen a wide amount of success since it launched last week, with over 21 million players downloading the game and making it the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/genshin-impact-chinese-global-launch\/\">biggest global launch of any Chinese game ever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the game got its start in China, it&#8217;s since found\u00a0a global audience. Some of these players have been dismayed to find that\u00a0<em>Genshin Impact<\/em>&#8216;s in-game text chat automatically censors the words &#8216;Taiwan&#8217; and &#8216;Hong Kong.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/banned-hearthstone-pro-blitzchung-hong-kong-comments\/\">Banned Hearthstone Pro Blitzchung Doesn&#8217;t Regret Hong Kong Comments<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Senior Analyst, Daniel Ahmad, took to Twitter to give an explanation as to why this censor is in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/genshin-impact\/\"><em>Genshin Impact<\/em><\/a>. Ahmad explained that with developer miHoYo being a mainland China based company, it has many laws and regulations it must follow. These regulations include a list of banned words and content that cannot be shared if it is deemed a threat to &#8220;China&#8217;s national unity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad went on to explain that while these laws apply to Chinese versions of the games, they technically aren&#8217;t needed outside of China. He continued by saying this is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegamer.com\/genshin-impact-censors-taiwan-and-hong-kong-in-chat\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">why Chinese developers will sometimes have a Chinese version of the game<\/a> as well as a global version with varying content. As an example, he cited\u00a0<em>PUBG Mobile<\/em>, which was developed by Chinese company Tencent,\u00a0as another example of the word &#8216;Taiwan&#8217; being censored in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZhugeEX\/status\/1313575651656564736?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This obviously is not the first instance of Chinese censoring Taiwan recently. At the end of August it was discovered that the classic Neo Geo game\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/baseball-stars-2-taiwan-censored\/\"><em>Baseball Stars 2<\/em> had removed all references to Taiwan<\/a> and Taipei following a recent port. This change from the &#8216;Taiwan Dragons&#8217; to simply &#8216;Dragons&#8217; seems to be directly tied to the growing political tensions between\u00a0Taiwan and China.<\/p>\n<p>It seems like China-based game developers are determined not to undermine the country&#8217;s laws\u00a0by controlling the content provided in-game, as well as what the players themselves might\u00a0provide while playing. In 2019, players saw\u00a0<em>Hearthstone\u00a0<\/em>player Blitzchung receive a hefty ban from Blizzard for expressing pro-Hong Kong sentiments in a post-match interview. And although <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/blizzard-statement-reaffirms-blitzchung-suspension-hong-kong\/\">Blizzard later reduced the length of the ban<\/a> from a year down to 6 months and reinstated his prize money, the company stayed firm that the statements violated the policies Blitzchung had agreed to.<\/p>\n<p>At this time, it seems that this censorship will likely never be removed which is sure to be disappointing to some fans of\u00a0<em>Genshin Impact<\/em>.
