During a\u00a0special presentation for the then-upcoming streaming service HBO Max,\u00a0Casey Bloys, president of HBO Programming, announced the network had given a 10-episode series order<\/a> to a Game of Thrones<\/em><\/strong><\/a> prequel titled\u00a0House of the Dragon. <\/em>Now, The Bourne Ultimatum<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Hot Fuzz<\/em>\u00a0star\u00a0Paddy Considine has signed on the portray the role of\u00a0King Viserys I in the upcoming series.<\/p>\n

Based on author George R. R. Martin’s book titled\u00a0Fire & Blood<\/em>, which chronicles the history of House\u00a0Targaryen, the prequel series will be set 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones<\/em>. In the lore of Martin’s fantasy world<\/a>,\u00a0King Viserys I ruled over Westeros approximately 100 years\u00a0after\u00a0Aegon I Targaryen conquered the land.<\/p>\n

Per Variety,\u00a0Considine’s King\u00a0King Viserys I is described as a warm, kind, and decent man who only hopes to carry his grandfather’s legacy forward. However, despite being chosen to succeed\u00a0King Jaehaerys Targaryen by the lords of Westeros, “good men do not necessarily make for great kings”. Known for roles in features film including The Death of Stalin<\/em> and Cinderella Man<\/em>,\u00a0Considine has also\u00a0collaborated with\u00a0HBO in the past with roles in The Outsider<\/em> and The Third Day<\/em>. House of the Dragon<\/em>\u00a0was one of many projects being developed to succeed\u00a0Game of Thrones<\/em><\/a>, but none of the others appear to be moving forward at this point.<\/p>\n

Frequent Game of Thrones<\/em> episode<\/a> director\u00a0Miguel Sapochnik will serve as showrunner alongside\u00a0Ryan Condal, who co-created House of the Dragon<\/em> with Martin.\u00a0Orange is the New Black<\/em> producer and House<\/em> screenwriting alumn Sara Lee Hess is on board as writer and executive producer.\u00a0Sapochnik, Condal, Martin, and Vince Gerardis will also serve as executive producers. The pilot and additional episodes will be directed by\u00a0Sapochnik.<\/p>\n

Of course, the Game of Thrones<\/em> franchise still has to earn back some goodwill after the largely panned final season. Reactions to the conclusion of the series even prompted a group of fans to launch a petition<\/a> calling on HBO to remake the final season with a new team of writers.<\/p>\n

House of the Dragon<\/em> will also have more competition to face, arguably, as networks have developed fantasy shows\u00a0of their own since Game of Thrones<\/em>. Perhaps the most notable of these would be Netflix’s The Witcher<\/em><\/a>, which is expected to debut its second season in 2021.<\/p>\n

House of the Dragon<\/em> is expected to debut in 2022.<\/p>\n
