That said, the Caped Crusader\u2019s recent video game adaptations have built up quite the reputation for Batman within the medium. Between <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arkham Asylum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">City<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there\u2019s no real shortage of high quality single player Batman games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/batman-arkham-asylum-best-things-about-game\/\">Batman: Arkham Asylum: 7 Best Things About The Game (&amp; 3 That Could\u2019ve Been Better)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As great as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arkham <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">games are, it\u2019s important to remember that the Dark Knight starred in a number of games before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asylum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 for better &amp; for worse. Batman\u2019s early adventures might not reach the high standards fans are looking for, but they\u2019re fascinating pieces of video game history nonetheless.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Batman (1986)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Batman-ZX-Spectrum.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The very first <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video game was developed by Ocean Software in 1986. An isometric action-adventure game, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1986) released to critical acclaim. Reviewers cited not only the game\u2019s level design, but its comparative sophistication to other titles of the era.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping in mind that Nintendo hadn\u2019t quite reinvigorated the games industry yet, the fact Batman\u2019s first video game adaptation was a success is quite a surprise. Said praise isn\u2019t unearned, however, as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1986) features a primitive form of saving that makes it so players don\u2019t need to restart the entire game upon death, and the art direction has its charm.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>The Caped Crusader (1988)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/The-Caped-Crusader.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocean Software\u2019s second Batman game, 1988\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman: The Caped Crusader<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> swapped the original\u2019s isometric gameplay in favor of arcade-esque side-scrolling. Stages were still explorable by design, but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Caped Crusader\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s design goal seems to center around giving Batman a more engaging combat challenge. Like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1986,) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Caped Crusader <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released to critical praise. Much in the same way <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">featured an early form of saving, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Caped Crusader <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">features an early form of multiple routes\u2013 with The Joker and The Penguin both having their own gameplay scenarios where they\u2019re the main villains.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>The Movie (1989)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Batman-Movie.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ocean Software\u2019s final batman game and an adaptation of Tim Burton\u2019s film of the same name, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman: The Movie <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">likewise released to rave reviews, even earning the Game of the Year award from the now defunct Crash magazine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/batman-arkham-origins-did-right-disappointing\/\">5 Things Batman: Arkham Origins Did Right (&amp; 5 That Were Disappointing)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like its predecessors, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman: The Movie <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marches to the beat of its own drum. Gameplay is the most modern of the Ocean Software games, fairly comparable to arcade games of the late 80s and early NES games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>The Video Game (1989\/1990)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Batman-NES.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developed by Sunsoft, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman: The Video Game <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was the franchise\u2019s first video game to lack Ocean Software\u2019s involvement. Despite this, little quality was lost in the shift in developers. If anything, Sunsoft\u2019s interpretation of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lends itself to a surprisingly addictive NES action-platformer that takes valuable notes from the likes of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ninja Gaiden<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although an adaptation of Tim Burton\u2019s film, Sunsoft does bolster the movie\u2019s plot by adding in characters exclusive to the comics\u2013 Deadshot, Killer Moth, KGBeast, and Nightslayer all appear alongside the Joker, alongside other members of Batman\u2019s rogues. Sunsoft developed a <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/game-boy\">Game Boy<\/a> port of the game where Batman uses a gun, but it doesn\u2019t match the same quality of the NES original.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Batman Sega Genesis (1990)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Batman-Sega.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the differences in hardware between the Super Nintendo and <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/sega-genesis\">Sega Genesis<\/a>, multiplatform games often featured significant changes\u2013 even if they were developed by the same studio. Sunsoft worked on the NES and Sega Genesis versions of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman: The Video Game<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the Sega Genesis release is more than just a spitshine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only is the story far more accurate to the film (cutting new characters and featuring more cutscenes,) the gameplay loses its <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ninja Gaiden <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influence and overall a far slower action-platformer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Batman PC-Engine (1990)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Batman-PC-Engine.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunsoft yet again refused to simply remake or port the NES version of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, creating an all new version entirely for the PC-Engine. This game was released exclusively in Japan, owing to the fact that it was abruptly changed from an action-platformer into an arcade-esque adventure game (along with the fact the TurboGrafx simply wasn\u2019t doing well in the west.) Gameplay has an emphasis on puzzle-solving, but nothing\u2019s particularly too challenging\u2013 the difficulty curve never getting any higher than early <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/zelda\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zelda <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dungeons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Batman Arcade (1990)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Batman-arcade.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Developed by Atari Games, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1990) is an adaptation of Tim Burton\u2019s movie, but sticks very close to the beat em formula popularized by arcades of the era. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(1990) is purely a side-scroller, featuring a higher difficulty curve than its predecessor and cutscenes that stick as close to the movie as possible. Don\u2019t expect to see any <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cabinets in the arcades, but the game itself isn\u2019t particularly difficult to track down.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Return Of The Joker (1991)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Return-of-the-Joker.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best games on the NES, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Return of the Joker <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is an NES adaptation of the comic book story arc of the same name. Detailing Joker\u2019s first appearance following his presumed death during the events of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Death in the Family<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the game pits Batman against most of his rogues in a game that turns a disappointing two-parter into a fantastic action-platformer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/batman-games-related-comics\/\">5 Batman Games That Are Just Like The Comics (&amp; 5 That Aren\u2019t)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gameplay is fast paced, and while that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/ninja-gaiden\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ninja Gaiden <\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vibe has since been lost, Sunsoft\u2019s last depiction of the Dark Knight makes for an excellent finale to their interpretation of Batman.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Batman Returns (1992)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Batman-Returns.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman Returns <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is very much a game of its time. By the early 90s, the movie industry had mastered the art of commissioning video game adaptations. As a result, several different developers worked on their own versions of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman Returns<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most notable of which, however, were Konami\u2019s. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman Returns <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/snes\">Super Nintendo<\/a> is arguably the best version of the lot, an action side-scroller that\u2019s very much in line with the combat found in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final Fight<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Konami also ported the game to the NES, but it\u2019s understandably a simpler affair altogether.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>The Animated Series (1993)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Batman-Animated-Series.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An adaption of the animated series of the same name, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Batman: The Animated Series <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was developed for the Game Boy in 1993. <a href=\"http:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/konami\">Konami<\/a> was once again working on the franchise, which in a way ensured the game\u2019s quality.
