The fighting franchise has gone through a lot of changes since its inception. New fatalities, new finishers (remember Friendship? How about Babalities?), and plenty of guest stars.\u00a0<strong><em>Mortal Kombat 11 <\/em><\/strong>keeps up the habit of adding more, more, more, right up to its<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/mortal-kombat-11-halloween-dlc-skins\/\">impressive DLC character<\/a> reveals, like the latest one presenting Rambo alongside old fan favorites Rain and Mileena.<\/p>\n<p>What started in 2011 as a natural fling between the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/free-steam-pc-games-halloween\/\">horror genre and a violent fighting game<\/a> has now evolved into a showcase for some of the 80\u2019s and 90\u2019s most iconic franchises. So many have now joined the roster that it&#8217;s possible to use <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> as inspiration for a Halloween movie marathon. But while good old Freddy\u2019s home franchise <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/nightmare-elm-street-movies-ranked-worst-best\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>A Nightmare on Elm Street<\/em> has 9 entries in total<\/a>, the original film bearing the same name is the best place to start as it encapsulates the horror side better than any other in the series.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Xqqej9T2gqI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Jason is the <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> rep suffering the worst case of \u201csequelitis\u201d so the original <em>Friday the 13th Part 2<\/em> is the go to option here. Why not the original? Because as anyone who&#8217;s ever watched <em>Scream<\/em> knows, Jason isn&#8217;t the killer in the first Friday the 13th, his mom is. Even so, <em>Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter<\/em> is also a more than decent option. Or go with <em>Jason X<\/em> if you want to laugh along with the kills, because that movie is just <em>priceless<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_1wDBNHYDv8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Predator\u2019s<\/em> first entry stands heads and shoulders above the rest in the franchise by a significant margin. It\u2019s one the greatest action movies of all time, yet it doesn\u2019t take itself that seriously and there&#8217;s no better proof of this than <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/stars-wars-squadrons-memes\/\">the &#8220;Epic Handshake&#8221; meme<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Texas-Chain-Saw-Massacre-1974.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>1974\u2019s <em>The Texas Chainsaw Massacre<\/em> is an absolute marvel that made a 10,000% return on its very low budget ($700,000 adjusted for inflation) and it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-ps4-xbox-one-horror-games-evil-within-2\/\">genuinely scary without relying on gore<\/a>.\u00a0Even Stephen King thinks so. The 2003 remake is its complete opposite in almost every way.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Alien.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>There are solid arguments on each side in settling whether <em>Alien<\/em> or its sequel\u00a0is the better movie, but there\u2019s no debate in saying both are sci-fi masterpieces. They are very different, with Ridley Scott\u2019s original work excelling more at slow-paced suspense and James Cameron\u2019s <em>Aliens<\/em> being much more action-packed. The first one has the classic chestburster scene, the second one has &#8220;Get away from her, you bitch!&#8221; Eh, just watch both.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CRRlbK5w8AE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>The Terminator<\/em> (1984) was James Cameron\u2019s breakout movie and a must see for anyone, yet <em>Terminator 2<\/em> made solid on the promise that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be back, only bigger and better. To top that off, <em>Mortal Kombat 11<\/em> is even more packed with references to the sequel. Another case where watching both is simply necessary.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZQTqu1_iQkw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A bit of a left field pick, however, considering how prevalent Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix\u2019s roles still are in recent memory, but perhaps it\u2019s time to give another Joker a chance. The animated film digs into one of the many story arcs for <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/batman-first-video-games-in-order\/\">The Joker and it features Mark Hamill voiceover<\/a> work that is sorely missed in <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Spawn-animated-1.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Spanning three seasons from 1997 to 1999, <em>Spawn: The Animated Series<\/em> is the comic book antihero\u2019s only well-received appearance, given the disastrous results of his 1997 film. Its legacy is backed up by current development of an animated <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/animated-spawn-movie-todd-mcfarlane-image-comics\/\">film also under the tutelage of Todd McFarlane<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6tC_5mp3udE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Another one of the all time greats when it comes to action movies, <em>RoboCop<\/em> has aged incredibly well by foreshadowing events like Detroit\u2019s bankruptcy, the militarization of the police force, privatization of public services and poking fun at the corporate America of the 80\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MortalKombat\/status\/1314188797102428161?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>If the irony of having Vietnam war veteran John Rambo join <em>Mortal Kombat<\/em> is somehow lost among gamers, then <em>First Blood<\/em> is due homework. Not really a Halloween movie, but\u00a0<em>First Blood<\/em> is a sobering\u00a0reminder of the terrible consequences of war and also the best way to start brushing up on Rambo movie references before the man himself lands in the world of Netherrealm.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JHIfHL5UgFs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Is <em>Mortal Kombat\u00a0<\/em>a good film? Well, no, but it has a great claim to the title of &#8220;best fighting game movie&#8221;, though that doesn&#8217;t say much when competing against the likes of <em>Street Fighter<\/em>, <em>Tekken<\/em>, <em>Dead or Alive<\/em> and <em>Dragonball Evolution<\/em>.
