This was confirmed after an auction process for the movie rights was won by Paramount Pictures, over the likes of Netflix, Warner Bros. and Apple.<\/p>\n<p>Deadline broke the news for the upcoming <em>Cleopatra<\/em> film, which will be produced by Charles Roven and Patty Jenkins, with Gal Gadot joining production duties on behalf of her own company, Pilot Wave Motion Pictures, alongside her husband Jaron Varsano. Laeta Kalogridis is set to be the executive producer and screenwriter for <em>Cleopatra<\/em>, with her resume already boasting movies like <em>Shutter Island<\/em>, <em>Alita: Battle Angel<\/em> and, <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/the-worst-movies-of-the-2010s-according-to-one-critic\/\">funnily enough, 2004\u2019s <em>Alexander<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\"><strong>RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/wonder-woman-1984-vod-streaming\/\">Wonder Woman 1984 Director Dismisses Straight to VOD Release<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gal Gadot is said to have come up with the idea for <em>Cleopatra<\/em>, which was birthed at Pilot Wave and then aggressively pitched by its team of producers over the last few months, leaning mostly on the back of Kalogridis\u2019 early writing and research.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameborder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GalGadot\/status\/1315443922957729792?s=20\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The story of Egypt&#8217;s queen has been tackled before, of course.\u00a01963\u2019s <em>Cleopatra,\u00a0<\/em>starring Elizabeth Taylor at the top of her game, was the most expensive production ever made back then, to the point where its massive commercial success barely compensated the absurd costs accrued by 20th Century Fox to finish it, almost single-handedly driving the studio to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Cleopatra\u00a0is such a hot property that even Sony has had a project in the works for years that would bring\u00a0her back, with the likes of Angelina Jolie and <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/wonder-woman-1984-cheetah-doll-lady-gaga\/\">Lady Gaga<\/a> rumored to star in it, though there&#8217;s not much more known about it than that. \u00a0<em>Wonder Woman<\/em>\u00a0was met with widespread positive reception for how it portrayed female empowerment, a feat largely attributed to the Gadot and Jenkins formula, something that will hopefully be replicated when telling\u00a0<em>Cleopatra&#8217;s<\/em> story.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone is excited about Gal Gadot\u2019s self-casting as <em>Cleopatra<\/em>, as the news was met with certain\u00a0pushback from critics pointing to the actress\u2019 ethnicity as an issue.
