The Metal Gear<\/em><\/a> franchise has always been known for its compelling characters. Solid Snake, Big Boss,\u00a0& Raiden are some of the greatest action heroes in gaming<\/a>,\u00a0and their supporting players are\u00a0just as impressive.\u00a0One of the most beloved is Gray Fox. The man debuted in the very first\u00a0Metal Gear<\/em>\u00a0title as a captured operative that Solid Snake needed to save.<\/p>\n

Gray Fox’s role and popularity grew in the proceeding games. He eventually became a fan-favorite once he transformed into the extremely powerful and athletic Cyborg Ninja. Even die-hard fans struggle to know everything about Gray Fox because there’s always been an air of mystery to him.<\/p>\n

10 <\/span>Origin Of His Civilian Name<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Gray Fox goes by multiple different names throughout the series. One of the most common is Frank Jaeger, which many assume to be his real name. But that’s not exactly the case.<\/p>\n

As explained in Portable Ops,<\/em>\u00a0when the future Ninja was a child soldier in Mozambique, he killed a bunch of government soldiers with a knife. Because he spoke a little german and preyed upon his victims like a hunter, people started to refer to him as Frank Jaeger, which translates to Frank Hunter. The name ended up sticking with him for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n

9 <\/span>Voiced By Three Different People<\/h2>\n

As the first two Metal Gears<\/em> didn’t include voice acting, Gray Fox’s tones couldn’t be heard until Metal Gear Solid \u2013 <\/em>incidentally when the series got really good<\/a>. At that time, his voice was provided by Greg Eagles, who would later gain fame as Grim from The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Eagles didn’t remain as the character for long, as in the Twin Snakes<\/em> remake, he was replaced by legendary voice actor Rob Paulsen \u2013 known for his work on Animaniacs<\/em>. The lesser-known Larc Spies then came in a few years later to voice the younger version of the character from Portable Ops <\/em>and\u00a0went on to\u00a0play the older Jaeger in the digital graphic novels. All three actors put their own spin on the character, and they all did a decent job.<\/p>\n

8 <\/span>Killed His Ex-Lover<\/h2>\n

Between the Big Boss and Solid Snake games<\/a>, Frank Jaeger met a talented figure-skater from Czechoslovakia, known as Gustava Heffner. The two quickly fell in love and wanted to elope together. However, America denied her request for asylum, and the couple had to separate.<\/p>\n

Years later, she became a spy and assisted Snake on Zanzibar Land. This put her in direct opposition to Gray Fox, although neither of them knew it. At one point during the mission, Fox destroyed a bridge hoping to impede Snake’s progress. Unfortunately, he killed Gustava in the process. It seems Jaeger never found out about what he’d done, which was for the best as he’d already had a difficult life without that added guilt.<\/p>\n

7 <\/span>Alternate Outfit In Metal Gear Solid<\/h2>\n

Every fan knows that Fox’s signature exoskeleton was primarily blue with some orange\/brown highlights, but it was also possible to unlock a beautiful red look for him in the first Metal Gear Solid<\/em>.<\/p>\n

All players had to do was play through the game twice, getting both the Meryl and Otacon endings. When Fox appeared in the third run-through, he was dressed in his stylish red suit.<\/p>\n

6 <\/span>The First Character To Pilot A Metal Gear<\/h2>\n

Throughout the games, many bosses have made use of the franchise’s titular machines<\/a>. And while the likes of Liquid and Ocelot’s stints as pilots are the most memorable, neither of them were the first.<\/p>\n

That was Gray Fox, as he controlled one in an attempt to take down Solid Snake during the second game in the series. Within the Metal Gear<\/em> universe, he wasn’t the first, but those instances happened in the prequels. Fox was the first to do it in a game, and it was a historic moment in regards to the series.<\/p>\n

5 <\/span>Most Recurring Boss In The Series<\/h2>\n

Along with cardboard boxes and codec calls, boss fights are one of the staples of the Metal Gear <\/em>games. In these battles, stealth was usually disregarded as the protagonist went up against at least one powerful adversary in what was a usually difficult fight<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, Gray Fox has been the hero’s opponent in these skirmishes more often than anyone else. Solid Snake faced the man twice in Metal Gear 2<\/em> and once in Metal Gear Solid<\/em>. Big Boss, on the other hand, fought him on two occasions during Portable Ops<\/em> while he was going by the name, Null.<\/p>\n

4 <\/span>Hidden Scene In Metal Gear Solid<\/h2>\n

Despite being one of the best parts about the original Metal Gear Solid<\/em>, Gray Fox didn’t physically appear in the game too often. He did have a hidden scene, though, that many players missed.<\/p>\n

It occurred during the torture section of the game. If the player suffered through all of Ocelot’s punishing sessions without escaping from the holding cell, the Ninja came to rescue Snake. He sliced open the door before acrobatically jumping away.<\/p>\n

3 <\/span>MGS Wasn’t Going To Include A Ninja<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

It’s hard to imagine the first Metal Gear Solid<\/em> without the Cyborg Ninja as he was one of the characters that made the game timeless<\/a>. Yet, he wasn’t included in the title’s original concept.<\/p>\n

In the Metal Gear Solid Official\u00a0Handbook<\/em>, Kojima explains that artist Yoji Shinkawa created the Ninja design by himself. Since it looked really cool, Kojima then incorporated him into the story. It’s unclear if this means that Frank Jaeger would’ve been excluded from the game entirely, but he certainly wouldn’t have been as popular of a character if he wasn’t a Ninja.<\/p>\n

2 <\/span>Importance To The World Of Metal Gear<\/h2>\n

The Patriots did all sorts of experiments on Jaeger when they rebuilt him into the Cyborg Ninja. Part of the data they retrieved went into creating the powerful genome soldiers that took part in the Shadow Moses Incident, and the nanomachines that almost every soldier had in them also came from The Patriots’ work on Gray Fox. He played a significant part in changing the way wars were fought in the Metal Gear<\/em> universe,\u00a0albeit not by choice.<\/p>\n

1 <\/span>Hideo Kojima Wanted Metal Gear Rising To\u00a0Star Gray Fox<\/h2>\n
<\/figure>\n

Metal Gear Rising<\/em> was a unique entry in the franchise for a few reasons. Firstly it was a hack-and-slash title instead of a stealth game. And secondly, PlatinumGames was its main developer, not Kojima Productions (at least by the end).<\/p>\n

Its biggest link to the rest of the series came through its strong protagonist<\/a>, Raiden\u2013 although he wasn’t Hideo Kojima’s first choice for the leading role. The series creator wanted to make the original Cyborg Ninja the main character<\/a>. It was the rest of his team who insisted on Raiden, and Kojima respected their decision. It certainly would’ve been interesting to see a story revolving around Frank Jaeger.<\/p>\n
