Amazon<\/strong><\/a> Studios is in the process of acquiring Coming\u00a02 America <\/em>from Paramount Pictures. The sequel to the Eddie Murphy comedy classic was originally slated to hit theaters on Christmas Day 2020.<\/p>\n

Coming 2 America<\/em> will see Murphy’s\u00a0Prince Akeem returning to the United States after discovering he has a son he never knew about living in Queens. Murphy will be joined by returning stars<\/a>\u00a0Shari Headley, Arsenio Hall, and James Earl Jones alongside new cast members Jermaine Fowler and Leslie Jones.<\/p>\n

The deal between Paramount Pictures and Amazon Studios is reportedly worth roughly\u00a0$125 million. In addition to selling Coming 2\u00a0America<\/em>, Paramount is expected to transfer\u00a0consumer marketing tie-ins with McDonald’s<\/a> and whiskey brand Crown Royal to the streamer once the final details are settled.<\/p>\n

Per Variety,\u00a0Coming\u00a02 America<\/em>\u00a0is now expected to premiere on Amazon on December 18, 2020. However, the deal must first be approved by Murphy, who also serves as a producer on the sequel. Paramount\u00a0had reportedly considered multiple options for the sequel in recent weeks due to the latest wave of theater closings<\/a>, including selling the rights to CBS All Access, the streaming service owned by Paramount’s parent company\u00a0Viacom. Other streaming services looked at the film before Amazon and Paramount began negotiations.<\/p>\n

Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke is said to consider the deal a top priority for the production company, having recently acquired Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat<\/em> sequel<\/a>\u00a0in time to release the comedy ahead of the 2020 United States Presidential election. The studio also acquired Paramount’s feature film adaption of Tom Clancy’s novel\u00a0Without Remorse<\/em>, a decision the latter company made in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. The health crisis and ensuing theater closings also prompted Paramount to sell\u00a0Aaron Sorkin’s\u00a0The\u00a0Trial of the Chicago 7<\/em> and the action-comedy Lovebirds<\/em> to Netflix earlier this year.<\/p>\n

With the release of Coming 2 America<\/em>, the list of films and television shows receiving sequels or reboots decades after the originals debuted continues to grow. This past summer, Will Smith and director\u00a0Morgan Cooper moved forward with a reboot of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air<\/em><\/a> based on the latter’s fan-film, which reimagined the sitcom as a serious drama.<\/p>\n

Coming 2 America<\/em> is expected to premiere on Amazon Prime on December 18th, 2020.<\/p>\n
