It was originally marketed as a console for older gamers than its N64 counterpart. However, Sony soon decided that it wanted a slice of Nintendo&#8217;s pie and tried to brand <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/crash-bandicoot-spyro-dragon-playstations-best-platforming-mascot\/\"><em>Crash Bandicoot <\/em>and<em> Spyro The Dragon\u00a0<\/em><\/a>as their gaming mascots. <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/kratos-vs-nathan-drake-playstation-best-hero-god-war-uncharted\/\">The <em>Crash<\/em> and <em>Spyro<\/em> trilogies<\/a> were very successful, but they didn&#8217;t quite reach the heights of the <em>Mario <\/em>and<em> Zelda<\/em> series.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Sony decided to embrace its\u00a0lack of identity and instead\u00a0use it as evidence of its diversity. With vastly different games like <em>Crash Bandicoot, Metal Gear Solid, <\/em>and<em> Tony Hawk&#8217;s Pro Skater<\/em> all proving to be very successful. One of the original PlayStation&#8217;s\u00a0many successful genres was its first-person shooters, which were entering their prime when the console debuted in the mid-nineties.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>007: The World Is Not Enough<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-World-Is-Not-Enough-PS1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>The World is Not Enough<\/em> was the second <em>James Bond<\/em> game to be <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nostalgic-playstation-two-games\/\">released on the <em>PlayStation<\/em><\/a>, and the first to be released on the Nintendo 64 since the genre-changing <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/goldeneye-007\/\">GoldenEye 007<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>Developer&#8217;s Black Ops Entertainment\u00a0improved on their previous entry <em>Tomorrow Never Dies <\/em>with more gadgets, tighter gameplay, and smarter enemy A.I.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these improvements, the development team\u00a0again made the baffling decision to not include a multiplayer mode, frustrating players who were hoping for a split-screen mode similar to the N64&#8217;s<em> GoldenEye.\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-sony-mistakes-history\/\">This was especially disappointing<\/a> as Eurocom&#8217;s N64<em>\u00a0<\/em>version of <em>The World Is Not Enough<\/em> was released a month earlier and had an excellent multiplayer mode.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Disruptor<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Disruptor-PS1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Disruptor<\/em> was the first game released by Insomniac Games<em>,<\/em>\u00a0the company that would go on to develop the original <em>Spyro The Dragon<\/em> trilogy.<em>\u00a0<\/em>Indicative of being the company&#8217;s first game it struggled to find it&#8217;s own identity, playing similarly to previously released games like <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/doom\/\"><em>Doom <\/em><\/a>and<em> Duke Nukem 3D.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Disruptor<\/em> did have some innovations though, predominantly its Psionics. These Psionics gave players various abilities such as Heal, Shock, and Shield.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Alien Trilogy<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Alien-Trilogy-PS1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Movie tie-in games are often looked down upon predominantly due to the rushed development that is needed to ensure that they are released in-line with the movie release date. <em>Alien Trilogy<\/em>, however, was released over four years after the third Alien movie. giving developers Probe Entertainment\u00a0plenty of time to make a game fitting of its corresponding films. This development time paid off, as <em>Alien Trilogy <\/em>provided an enjoyable action experience <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-playstation-games-undersold\/\">that sold very well.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Jumping Flash! 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Jumping-Flash-2.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Jumping Flash! 2<\/em> had the difficult task of trying to emulate the success of the award-winning\u00a0<em>Jumping Flash!<\/em>. Developer&#8217;s Exact didn&#8217;t try to re-invent the wheel and kept the gameplay very similar to its predecessor. The game did add performance medals, though, adding replay value to the game by rewarding players for completing levels in\u00a0different ways.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Duke Nukem: Total Meltdown<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/duke-nukem-total-meltdown-ps1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Duke Nukem:\u00a0Total Meltdown<\/em> is the name given to the PlayStation port of the game better known as <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/tag\/duke-nukem-3d\/\">Duke Nukem 3D<\/a>.\u00a0<\/em>The game\u00a0is heavily inspired by\u00a0<em>Doom<\/em> and subsequently plays very similarly. With fast-paced, action gameplay that must be tackled head-on present throughout <em>Duke Nukem<\/em>&#8216;s third entry.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-now-ps2-best-worst-games\/\">PlayStation Now: 5 Best PS2 Games On The Service (&amp; 5 Worst)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The game does have a few differentials, though, predominantly through the variety of environments that players fight in, something that the early <em>Doom<\/em> games lacked. Unfortunately, the PlayStation port of <em>Duke Nukem 3D<\/em> was far from perfect. It struggled with constant frame rate issues and\u00a0lacked a split-screen multiplayer mode despite the feature being in the\u00a0other versions of the game.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Quake 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Quake-2-PS1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Quake 2<\/em> was originally going to be a new IP. However, developers id Software ultimately decided to name the game <em>Quake 2<\/em> as they felt that the gameplay was too similar to the original <em>Quake<\/em> to justify creating a new series.\u00a0Because of this, <em>Quake 2<\/em> plays slightly differently to the original. The player&#8217;s movement is noticeably slower, and the new ability to crouch\u00a0offered more tactical cover-based gameplay.<\/p>\n<p><em>Quake 2<\/em>\u00a0also offers one of the best multiplayer game modes on the console, giving PlayStation gamers an enjoyable split-screen experience to rival the N64&#8217;s<em> GoldenEye<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Jumping Flash!<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Jumping-Flash-PS1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Jumping Flash!<\/em>\u00a0introduced PlayStation\u00a0gamers to the robotic rabbit, suitably named Robbit. The game differentiated itself from other shooters on the console by combining FPS gameplay with platforming.<\/p>\n<p>The game uniquely allowed players to jump multiple times,\u00a0letting them reach extreme heights and navigate levels with ease. This ability to navigate stages quickly is a fundamental part of the gameplay, as players need to obtain 4 jet pods in a limited timescale of 10 minutes to complete each level.\u00a0<em>Jumping Flash!<\/em> won<em> GameFan&#8217;s\u00a0<\/em>Megaward\u00a0PlayStation\u00a0Game Of The Year award in 1995.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Medal of Honor: Underground<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Medal-Of-Honor-Underground-PS1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Medal of Honor: Underground\u00a0<\/em>is the second installment in the long-running <em>Medal of Honor<\/em> series. The World War Two shooter attempted to improve on its predecessor by adding tanks to fight against and allies to fight alongside. The objective-based gameplay that the <em>Medal of Honor<\/em> series is known for returned and the pre-existing catalog of weaponry was improved upon.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/playstation-5-games-rumored-might-be-next-playstation-football-demon-souls\/\">PlayStation 5: 10 Games Rumored To Be Coming To The Next PlayStation<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Doom<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Doom-PS1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The iconic hardcore shoot-em-up <em>Doom<\/em> finally became available to <em>PlayStation<\/em> players in late 1995. The<em> PlayStation 1<\/em> port includes levels from both <em>Doom 1<\/em> and <em>Doom 2,<\/em>\u00a0plus 7 of its own new stages. This excellent range of levels made up for the lack of split-screen. However, multiplayer was still available, but\u00a0it forced players to use two consoles and two copies of the game if they <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-online-ps2-games\/\">wanted to play with a friend.<\/a>\u00a0Due to the <em>PlayStation<\/em>&#8216;s hardware strength, the PS1 version of <em>Doom<\/em> boasted improved graphics. Including better animations and color depth.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Medal of Honor<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Medal-Of-Honor-PS1.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Topping the list is the original <em>Medal of Honor.<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em>The smash-hit beginning to the long-running EA series\u00a0engrossed\u00a0gamers with its excellent objective-based gameplay that took place in a realistic and immersive WW2 setting.<\/p>\n<p>As it tradition with EA<em>, <\/em>there were numerous characters and features to unlock. These characters weren&#8217;t just generic soldiers with different sets of gear though<em>. <\/em>Players could unlock William Shakespeare, Winston Churchill, and even a velociraptor\u2014yes, seriously.\u00a0Medal of Honor also featured one of the best multiplayer modes on the console.
