With titles like<em> Super Mario 64<\/em>, <em>The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time<\/em>, <em>Mario Kart 64,<\/em> and <em>The Legend of Zelda: Majora&#8217;s Mask<\/em>, it&#8217;s easy to see why.<\/p>\n<p>Collectathon games\u00a0like <em>Banjo-Kazooie <\/em>and<em> Donkey Kong 64<\/em> and innovative <em>Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> games such as <em>Pok\u00e9mon Stadium <\/em>and<em> Pok\u00e9mon Snap <\/em>are also at the forefront of people&#8217;s memories when reminiscing about the console. As developers were instead opting to put their titles on<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/canceled-playstation-games-rare-unknown\/\"> <em>Sony&#8217;s PlayStation<\/em><\/a>, which had an older fan base.\u00a0Despite the limited FPS titles, the <em>N64<\/em>\u00a0managed to provide gamers with an excellent array of games. Some of which are still considered to be among the best in the genre.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/turok-3-N64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion<\/em> is considered to be the weakest of the three <em>Turok<\/em> games released on the <em>Nintendo 64<\/em>, but is still a great shooter in its own right.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas most sequels try to keep gameplay fresh and interesting by adding a multitude of new features,<em>\u00a0Turok 3<\/em> simplified the formula.\u00a0 With secondary ammo, and other of the predecessor&#8217;s more complex features\u00a0cut.<\/p>\n<p>There were some<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/wrestling-games-gameplay-features-best\/\">\u00a0gameplay changes though<\/a>, predominantly through\u00a0the\u00a0two playable characters. Instead of controlling Turok, players take the part of either Danielle or Joseph Fireseed. The siblings can use different weapons and have physical attribute differences. Danielle can jump higher than Joseph for example, like a first-person shooting Luigi.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Forsaken 64<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Forsaken-64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Developed by Iguana Entertainment UK, <em>Forsaken 64<\/em> is known for its fluid gameplay and smooth 360-degree movements. The game was primarily geared towards a multiplayer experience. With the split-screen gameplay that <em>GoldenEye<\/em> revolutionized being a prominent feature.<\/p>\n<p><em>Forsaken 64<\/em> is also known for its Total Mayhem difficulty mode. The mode provided one of the toughest challenges\u00a0that the N64 had to offer. Total Mayhem was so tricky, in fact, that a patch was released to lower the difficulty substantially.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>Doom 64<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Doom-64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>The sequel to<em> Doom 2, Doom 64<\/em> didn&#8217;t try to fix what wasn&#8217;t broken.\u00a0With the fast, brutal action gameplay that the series is known for still ever-present. But differences like giving the chainsaw an extra blade weren&#8217;t enough to entice fans. Subsequently, the game sold poorly.\u00a0<em>Doom 64<\/em>&#8216;s marketing also hurt sales, as many players believed the game to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-64-n64-games-ported-surprising\/\">an <em>N64<\/em> port<\/a> of the original Doom.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this negativity, <em>Doom 64<\/em> earns its spot on this list\u00a0for being\u00a0one of the best early <em>Doom<\/em> games to play retrospectively.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Quake<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/quake-N64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>If this list judged games based on all console\/PC releases, <em>Quake<\/em> would be near the top. However, when judging the game based on the <em>N64<\/em> version, <em>Quake<\/em> drops a few spots for being an underwhelming port. The lack of cooperative multiplayer and frustrating frame drops make the <em>N64<\/em> port the suboptimal way to play the classic game.<\/p>\n<p><em>Quake<\/em> is still great fun to play on the console though, with the disappointing port not being enough to deter from some of the best FPS gameplay of the era.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Quake 2<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/quake-2-N64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s not often that <em>Quake 2<\/em>\u00a0finds itself above its predecessor in a ranking list. However,\u00a0<em>Quake 2<\/em> earns its spot for being a far better port than the original.<\/p>\n<p><em>Quake 2<\/em> was originally going to be the first game in a new series.\u00a0It was only late in development that <em>id Software<\/em> decided to re-brand the game, as they felt it was too similar to <em>Quake<\/em> to call it anything else.<\/p>\n<p><em>Quake 2<\/em> had a more\u00a0methodical\u00a0approach to FPS gameplay than its <em>Doom<\/em>-like predecessor. Players had slower movements and could also crouch, allowing for more tactical, cover-based action.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Turok: Dinosaur Hunter<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/turok-1-N64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Turok: Dinosaur Hunter<\/em> is the first game in the<em>\u00a0Turok<\/em> series. It was an adaptation of a popular comic book series of the same title.<\/p>\n<p>The game had a huge impact on the<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/canceled-nintendo64-games-never-knew-existed\/\"> <em>Nintendo 64\u00a0<\/em><\/a>with the game not just having its own great sales figures, but also boosting console sales too. This historical relevance justifies the opinion of fans who believe that the original trilogy is underrated today.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>007: The World is Not Enough<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/The-world-is-not-007-N64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>The World is Not Enough<\/em> had the near-impossible job of following on from the previous <em>N64<\/em> Bond game, <em>GoldenEye 007. <\/em>Publishing rights changed from <em>Nintendo<\/em> to <em>EA<\/em>, and development changed hands from <em>Rare<\/em> to <em>Eurocom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/most-underrated-platformers-n64-overrated\/\">5 Most Underrated Platformers On The N64 (&amp; 5 That Are Underrated)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Eurocom<\/em> still managed to create an excellent first-person shooter with<em> The World is Not Enough, <\/em>despite it not being held anywhere near the same regard as <em>GoldenEye 007. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the game was crippled by its enemy AI, which is some of the worst of any game on this list.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Turok 2: Seeds of Evil<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/turok-2-seeds-of-evil-N64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Turok 2: Seeds of Evil<\/em>&#8216;s\u00a0inclusion in this list completes the hattrick for the original trilogy. Developer&#8217;s <em>Iguana Entertainment<\/em> delighted fans by including a multiplayer mode, something that the original game lacked.<\/p>\n<p>The multiplayer featured characters with differing skills. Agility, speed, health regeneration, and other abilities all varied depending on which character players chose.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Perfect Dark<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/perfect-dark-n64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Rare<\/em> didn&#8217;t rest on their laurels after losing the <em>James Bond<\/em> license. They instead created <em>Perfect Dark<\/em>, a spiritual successor to their <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/n64-games-deserve-remake\/\">legendary <em>GoldenEye<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Perfect\u00a0Dark<\/em> had an updated engine from <em>GoldenEye<\/em> and needed the <em>N64&#8242;<\/em>s Expansion Pak to run many of its key features.\u00a0<em>Perfect Dark <\/em>also\u00a0bought back the iconic split-screen multiplayer that <em>Rare<\/em> revolutionized. Furthermore, the game had an excellent single-player campaign. With innovative stealth gameplay that was a breath of fresh air from the all-action gameplay of titles like <em>Quake<\/em> and <em>Doom 64.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>GoldenEye 007<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/GoldenEye-007-N64.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>GoldenEye<\/em>\u00a0is not just the best FPS game on the <em>N64<\/em>, but one of the best FPS games ever released. The game undoubtedly shows its age today. But still deserves its\u00a0top spot on this list\u00a0for paving the way for titles like <em>Call of Duty, Halo, <\/em>and<em> Battlefield.<\/em>\u00a0Rare revolutionized split-screen multiplayer on consoles, with <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/goldeneye-nintendo-hidden-details-missed\/\">excellently designed stages<\/a> that made the\u00a0mode endlessly replayable.<\/p>\n<p>Often overlooked is the game&#8217;s single-player campaign.
