The console found its feet after a slow start, eventually reaching an <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/ps4-games-highest-lowest-sales-volume\/\">estimated sales figure of 30 million units<\/a>. This was predominantly due to the awful reception of two games that, surprisingly, both make it onto this list.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">10 <\/span>Dig Dug (1.64 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Dig-Dug.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Dig Dug<\/em>, like many entries on this list, started life as an arcade machine. Its\u00a0maze gameplay is similar to <em>Pac-Man\u00a0<\/em>and was praised at the time for its inclusion of loveable and marketable characters. As the name suggests, <em>Dig Dug<\/em> differentiates itself from<em> Pac-Man<\/em> by\u00a0having players and enemies navigate through solid dirt.<\/p>\n<p>The game was developed by Namco. A Japanese company that\u00a0was the predecessor to\u00a0<em>Bandai Namco<\/em>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/impossible-retro-80s-games\/\">the publisher that is\u00a0known today for\u00a0<em>Dark Souls<\/em> <\/a>and <em>Tekken.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">9 <\/span>Ms. Pac-Man (1.65 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/ms-pac-man.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>Comfortably the second most recognizable game in the maze genre, the arcade classic came to the <em>Atari 2600<\/em> in 1981. The<em> Atari 2600<\/em>\u00a0version of the game was very well received, unlike the disastrous <em>Pac-Man<\/em> port.<\/p>\n<p><em>Ms. Pac-Man on the Atari 2600<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abandonwaredos.com\/news-item.php?idn=247\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abandonwaredos.com\/news-item.php?idn=247\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won the Video Game of the Year (Less than 16k ROM Memory) Arcade Award in 1983<\/a>. <em>ColecoVision<\/em>&#8216;s <em>Lady Bug<\/em> won the over 16k award.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">8 <\/span>E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1.97 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/et-Atari-2600.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial<\/em> is one of the most infamous video games ever made.\u00a0The corresponding film looked set to generate huge income, with director Stephen Spielberg having recently directed the lucrative\u00a0<em>Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em>. Atari saw dollar signs and commissioned Howard Scott Warshaw to make a tie-in game in just six weeks.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/video-games-highest-selling-decade-copies-sold\/\">The 10 Highest-Selling Video Games Of The Decade (&amp; How Many Copies They Sold)<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This ultra-tight schedule resulted in one of the worst games ever made. It lost Atari<em>\u00a0<\/em>eye-watering amounts of money, as they had manufactured a reported 5 million cartridges in anticipation of high demand. An urban legend surfaced, claiming that the unsold cartridges were buried in a landfill.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eu.usatoday.com\/story\/tech\/2014\/04\/26\/diggers-find-ataris-et-games-in-landfill\/8232609\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amazingly, this was confirmed in 2014<\/a>,\u00a0when a group of diggers was hired to investigate the legend and found cartridges buried in New Mexico.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">7 <\/span>Demon Attack (2.13 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/demon-attack.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Demon Attack<\/em> was a fixed shooter set in space. Its gameplay was similar to titles like <em>Space Invaders, Galaxian,\u00a0<\/em>and<em> Phoenix<\/em>. Atari clearly picked up on the similarity to their game <em>Phoenix<\/em>, as they took legal action against <em>Demon Attack<\/em>&#8216;s developer and publisher Imagic.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this setback, <em>Demon Attack<\/em> was a success. It was Imagic&#8217;s highest ever selling game and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abandonwaredos.com\/news-item.php?idn=248\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won Video Game of the Year at the 1982 Arcade Awards.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">6 <\/span>Frogger (2.20 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/frogger-atari-2600.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Frogger<\/em> is one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/best-nostalgic-retro-indie-games\/\">iconic games on this list.<\/a> The game tasks players with crossing a\u00a0road and river to reach a safe space on the other side. This is far harder than it sounds though, as the unfortunate frog has to deal with alligator-infested waters and the world&#8217;s busiest road.<\/p>\n<p>The game was praised for its addictiveness at the time.\u00a0The gameplay mechanics are so addictive, in fact, that clones of the game are successful even today. Exemplified by\u00a0<em>Crossy Road,<\/em>\u00a0a 2014 mobile game that generated over $10 million in income just months after release.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">5 <\/span>Space Invaders (2.53 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/atari-space-invaders.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>If it wasn&#8217;t for <em>Space Invaders<\/em>, video gaming may still\u00a0be a niche form of media today. The game is recognized as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/call-of-duty-influenced-gaming\/\">most influential games ever made<\/a>, and for being a key figure in the aptly named golden age of arcade. Dates for when this golden age\u00a0ended vary, but 1978 will always be the starting year, as this is the year when the iconic shooter originally released.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"related-single\">RELATED: <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/highest-grossing-games-never-got-a-sequel\/\">The 10 Highest-Grossing Games That Never Got A Sequel<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Space Invaders<\/em> was created by Tomohiro Nishikado and is considered <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/10-best-retro-inspired-fps-games-ranked-according-metacritic\/\">gaming&#8217;s first-ever Shoot em&#8217; up<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">4 <\/span>Missile Command (2.76 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static2.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/missile-command.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p>One of the many Shoot em&#8217; up games that <em>Space Invaders<\/em> inspired is <em>Missile Command.\u00a0<\/em>The game required players to shoot down enemy missiles that are trying to destroy six cities; it\u00a0was inspired by the Cold War.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the six cities were originally based on six real American cities. However, game creator Dave Theurer removed the city names, possibly due to him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcadeclub.co.uk\/games\/missile-command\/#:~:text=When%20the%20game%20was%20originally,destroyed%20in%20a%20nuclear%20exchange.\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suffering from nightmares of his game&#8217;s\u00a0nuclear warfare becoming real.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">3 <\/span>Asteroids (4.31 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static1.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/asteroids-atari-2600.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Asteroids<\/em> is another key figure in the golden age of arcade. The space shooter differentiated itself from the popular fixed shooters by giving players full multi-directional control. This gameplay mechanic was enough to knock\u00a0<em>Space Invaders<\/em> off its perch, as <em>Asteroids<\/em> became the new leader of the arcade market.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, it was soon ported to the <em>Atari\u00a02600,\u00a0<\/em>where it again surpassed the sales of <em>Space Invaders.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">2 <\/span>Pitfall! (4.50 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static3.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pitfall-atari-2600.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Pitfall!<\/em> is a platformer made by current industry giants\u00a0<em>Activision<\/em>. Interestingly,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gamasutra.com\/view\/feature\/1537\/the_history_of_activision.php?print=1\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Activision\u00a0<\/em>was founded by game creators\u00a0who felt that Atari wasn&#8217;t giving them the financial reward or accreditation that they deserved.<\/a>\u00a0Furthermore, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/sethporges\/2017\/12\/20\/the-true-story-behind-the-original-video-game-easter-egg-that-inspired-ready-player-one\/#3900fa032976\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first-ever gaming easter egg was also a by-product of Atari&#8217;s treatment of game creators.<\/a> <em>Adventure<\/em>, which only narrowly missed out on this list, features a secret room. The room simply contains the words &#8220;Created by Warren Robinett&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Although<em>\u00a0Pitfall!<\/em> may not be able to hold a candle to modern platforming games like <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/crash-bandicoot-4-memes\/\"><em>Crash Bandicoot 4 <\/em><\/a>or <em><a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/super-mario-odyssey-hardest-bosses-beat\/\">Super Mario Odyssey<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0it is still contextually considered to be <a href=\"https:\/\/gamerant.com\/nintendo-64-best-games-90s-ranked\/\">one of the best video games ever made<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"item-title\"><span class=\"item-num\">1 <\/span>Pac-Man (7.81 million)<\/h2>\n<figure><img src='https:\/\/static0.gamerantimages.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/pac-man-atari-2600.jpg' \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Pac-Man,<\/em> along with <em>E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial<\/em>, is the <em>Atari 2600<\/em> game mentioned in the introduction that almost crashed the home console industry. The game was so bad, in fact, that stores began canceling customer&#8217;s orders of the game. As they were receiving so many returns and complaints that it wasn&#8217;t worth them selling it anymore.<\/p>\n<p>The game was criticized for massively watering-down the arcade classic&#8217;s gameplay. Moreover, hardware limitations meant that the game&#8217;s ghosts would constantly flicker.
