Four Fantastic Adventure Games You May Have Missed

The adventure game genre is rife with storytelling and puzzles, and we’ve recently discovered some gems that may have flown under your radar. If you’re looking for something different but altogether engaging, these smaller-scale games that came out in the last year can help scratch that itch.

Unforeseen Incidents
Release: May 24, 2018
Platform: PC, Mac

I’m still playing through this one, but so far, I’m absolutely hooked. You play as an average joe handyman who lives in a town that was recently plagued by a deadly virus. After coming across a woman dying on the street, he finds himself entangled in a mystery that involves a government conspiracy and could change the fate of his town. You journey across the land, including a gorgeous wilderness, meeting fascinating characters that sometimes bring more questions than answers.

The Gardens Between
Release: September 20, 2018
Platform: Switch, PS4, Xbox One, PC, Mac

This short, surreal puzzle game follows two best friends, Arina and Frendt, who find themselves in a strange world filled with garden islands. The most striking thing about The Gardens Between is its aesthetic and visuals, which show supersized objects like couches or televisions hanging from rocky cliffs. These real-world items and their environments are manifestations of the best friends’ memories. As you explore, you use both characters’ unique abilities to solve puzzles.

Unavowed
Release: August 18, 2018
Platform: PC

Unavowed is one of the most intriguing adventure games on this list, since it combines RPG elements with its point-and-click gameplay. You play as a young man or woman and begin by playing out their origin story as a actor, cop, or bartender. Once this short but gruesome opening has played out, you realize that you’re possessed and have no recollection of what you’ve done. From here, you cross paths with a paranormal investigation force called the Unavowed, and you start to discover what the demon has done in your shoes, and try to fix the havoc it has brought. Unavowed is especially cool because your companions are essentially like party members, who you can have long, sprawling conversations with and both puzzles and interactions can change depending on who you bring on missions. It has a Mass Effect-vibe but without the combat, which I thought was extremely interesting and well done in this genre-bending experience.

Eastshade
Release: February 13
Platform: PC

I haven’t personally played Eastshade, but the more I hear about it, the more I want to. Set in an Elder Scrolls-like fantasy world, you play as an artist who was recently shipwrecked near a small village. You roam the countryside, painting places that your recently-passed mother loved to frequent. The setup makes for what sounds like a heartwarming game, putting focus on exploration and conversing with characters rather than engaging in combat. The world looks absolutely gorgeous, too, which is helpful since your goal is painting your surroundings. The painting mechanic is a lot like taking screenshots or operating a camera, where you drag a frame across the screen to capture the environment.

Captain Marvel Shatters Records With Biggest Opening Weekend For Female-Led Film

Captain Marvel came to theaters this past Friday, and it’s already breaking records with its instant success. The film’s box office debut soared to $455 million worldwide this weekend in ticket sales, including $153 million in North America.

The global launch’s success surpasses Beauty and the Beast ($357 million) and is the second-largest for a comic book adaptation coming in behind Avengers: Infinity War ($640.5 million). It is also the sixth-biggest worldwide opening ever, and beats Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($281 million) with a $302 million international opening.

DC’s Wonder Woman made history with $103 million during its first weekend, but now Captain Marvel surpasses that too.

For more on Captain Marvel, read our interview with the movie’s composer and our feature that looks back at Captain Marvel’s place in video games.

Report: Square Enix Disables Streaming For Left Alive After Rocky Launch In Japan

Left Alive has been out in Japan for a few days now, but it’s been having a rocky debut, leaving fans worried about its Western launch.

According to Siliconera, Japan-based players were able to stream everything outside of Left Alive’s cutscenes when it released on February 28. Now, streaming has been disabled on PS4. Left Alive is also selling for nearly half-off on Amazon Japan, and has an average rating of 1.8 out of 5 stars on the retailer website. User reviews reflect issues relating to everything from graphics to controls.

Left Alive is a spiritual successor to the Front Mission series, but changes things up by focusing more action rather than tactics.

Left Alive releases in North America on March 5 for PlayStation 4 and PC.

This Neat Animation Shows Steam’s Most-Played Games In The Last Four Years

Gaming trends come and go, and this fascinating data visualizer, which is presented in a GIF below, gives you an idea of what Steam’s most-played games were over the last four years.

The sped-up graph shows the top 15 games on the platform by daily player count. PUBG dethrones Dota 2 when the battle royale game released in 2017, but Dota 2 begins to steadily climb back up in late 2018. Grand Theft Auto V, Counter-Strike, and Garry’s Mod all jump around in rank, but they are a few that remarkably stay on the list.

Monster Hunter: World, Skyrim, Rocket League, and certain football managers make notable appearances too. Check it out for yourself below.

Substitute Mr. X For Thomas The Tank Engine With This Resident Evil 2 Mod

If for whatever reason you wanted to replace Resident Evil 2’s insidious Mr. X with er, Thomas the Tank Engine, now you can.

With his never-ending smile, I’d say Thomas is nearly as creepy as Mr. X, but he’s also pretty funny. It’s ridiculous to see a bulky locomotive swing through doors and move towards you with murderous intent. Thomas’ theme song plays in the background, too, adding to the ludicrous atmosphere.

You may be surprised to know that this isn’t the first time Thomas the Tank Engine has invaded a popular game. Back in 2013, someone transformed a dragon from Skyrim into Thomas as well, making him a fire-breathing terror.

Watch some examples of Thomas the Tank Engine in Resident Evil 2 below.

Here’s What The Resident Evil 2 Remake Would Be Like With A Fixed Camera

The Resident Evil 2 remake has been getting rave reviews, by bringing a modern makeover to the beloved horror title and a new over-the-shoulder camera perspective, ditching the old fixed camera.

But what would the remake look like if it did still have that fixed camera? Modder Enveloping Sounds was curious to test this out, so they made a series of videos to test this concept. These are by no means a full-fledged mod, and Enveloping Sounds has mentioned that making this possible for the whole game could prove difficult.

“The near pitch black lighting in certain areas of the police station was designed with the over-the-shoulder view and flashlight in mind,” Enveloping Sounds write under one of their videos. “Much of the environmental detail simply isn’t visible [with fixed cameras], so you’d have to add tons of light sources around all the blacked-out areas for the fixed angle to be both aesthetically pleasing and practical.”

He adds that the aiming system could also be problematic with a fixed camera, and that it would need to be reverted to a simpler system.

Still, even if this was just a test, the results are impressive. The videos give a wider view of Resident Evil 2’s environments, and the fixed camera also works great for adding tension, since you often can’t see what’s to come ahead of you (i.e. when you go up a flight of stairs).

Check out the videos yourself below. You can see all five videos by heading to Enveloping Sounds’ YouTube channel.

Xbox’s Heartwarming Super Bowl Ad Puts Spotlight On Adaptive Controller

Microsoft’s new Super Bowl commercial puts the Xbox One Adaptive Controller at center stage, with young kids commenting about their positive experiences with it.

The controller was announced and released last year, and its main focus is making games more accessible for players with disabilities. The short Super Bowl ad is pretty touching, giving us a glimpse of how the controller has managed to let kids with physical disabilities still enjoy their favorite games.

The Super Bowl airs later today on CBS, at 5:30 p.m. CT. For more on the Xbox One Adaptive Controller, read our in-depth feature about it, where we spoke to several gamers with disabilities.

The Most Impressive Creations In Dreams So Far

Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Developer: Media Molecule
Release: TBA
Rating: Rating Pending
Platform: PlayStation 4

Media Molecule’s Dreams has been in closed beta since mid-December, and we’re already starting to see some really impressive work from players. In Dreams, players can both create their own games and play experiences made by others. In just over a month, there’s been a plethora of player-made content ranging from game demos to experimental art design.

We’ve checked out the closed beta ourselves and found some pretty cool stuff. These include short interactive cinematic experiences, proof of concepts for larger games that creators say they’ll finish when Dreams launches, and more. Some are buggy or janky, but that’s to be expected as creators get their heads around Media Molecule’s extensive but complicated tools.

This list contains original content rather than clones or remakes of games that already exist. If you want to see Dreams versions of Cuphead, Legend of Zelda, and more, check out our video where we explore them.

Here are the most impressive creations that we’ve found so far.

Prometheus

Creator: Rothniel

This first-person shooter takes place on a surreal landscape; maybe even on an entirely different planet. Large statue-like hands stick out of the ground, and zombie cyborgs chase you. Your only chance of survival is by shooting down these creepy foes or making a run for it.

Grape Escape

Creator: TheGleeMan

This is one of the weirder concepts I came across in Dreams, but also one of my favorites. You play as a bunch of grapes trying to get back home to their grape friends. I don’t want to spoil how it ends, but it gets wilder the more you progress. You spend your time jumping atop oversized chairs, balconies, and cars.

Starry Night

Creator: TheOnetronaut

This is more of an interactive art piece than a game, but that doesn’t make it any less spectacular. You begin in a small bedroom by a window. On the window sill, you can drink some absinthe, which then blurs and distorts your vision. Outside the window, the sky begins to swirl and distant mountains shift in form until they look nearly identical to Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

Time Corruption

Creator: SlurmMackenzie

With some impressive puzzle design and an interesting concept, Time Corruption is a stand-out game demo. The Tron-inspired, neon visuals create a striking aesthetic. You progress by jumping on various platforms and collecting glowing orbs. In this universe, time has been stopped “to prevent further damage.” Once you find the time-control bracelet, you can control time by fast-forwarding or rewinding. Doing so moves platforms and obstacles out of your way, though you need a keen eye to get out of some tricky areas.

The Encounter

Creator: Bigsurf77

This short game demo is part of a larger game that the creators plan on launching once Dreams is out. You explore a space station from a first-person perspective, with guidance from a floating robot who helps you unlock doors and pushes buttons on different interfaces. You need to find your way home, but things go wrong in the process. With fantastic-looking hallways and a massive hangar, The Encounter is one of the most visually impressive games in Dreams.

Curiosity

Creator: X_DISARMED_PRO_X

This is another piece from Disarmed, who is one of the more talented and prolific Dreamers I’ve come across. In Curiosity, you play as a robot who journeys through a barren land. All you have to do is get to the destination waypoint, so gameplay is minimal, but it’s another one of those Dreams creations that shows off some brilliant aesthetics.

Project Dead

Creator: Servilletor

More of a proof of concept than much else, Project Dead is a short cinematic where you walk down a hallway littered with dead bodies. With a massive gun at your disposal and a suggested history of carnage, it gives off some mega Doom vibes. I look forward to seeing what else its creator brings to Dreams.

Project Zero

Creators: X_DISARMED_PRO, Rothniel

This collaboration between two players, one of which is the creator of Prometheus, is a beautiful-looking FPS that shows off Dreams’ potential for realism. The team only has a visual test that’s viewable on Dreams called ‘Metro – Realistic Visual Benchmark’ that doesn’t have any gameplay. Details are slim, but you can take a look at some stunning screenshots here from the developer.

Have you been playing the closed beta? Made any cool projects yourself, or come across some we didn’t mention here? Let us know in the comments!
