Petroglyph’s New RTS, Conan: Unconquered, Challenges Your Survival Skills

Publisher: Funcom
Developer: Petroglyph
Release: Spring
Rating: Rating Pending
Platform: PC

Petroglyph Games, the team behind Star Wars: Empire at War that is currently remastering the classic Command & Conquer strategy games, released the first gameplay footage for a new “survival real-time strategy” game set in the Conan the Barbarian universe.

Conan: Unconquered puts you in control of the famed barbarian, but the twist here is you are more concerned with building your defenses and holding the fort rather than accruing resources to…let’s say, command or conquer. You are tasked with remaining “unconquered” much like Frostpunk challenged you to survive increasingly harsh environmental conditions and They Are Billions swarmed your base with zombie hordes.

With many of the familiar RTS trappings in place, it looks to take that and apply it to what appears almost like a tower defense variant on the genre. You are holed up in a stronghold and must fend off a set wave of attackers and remain standing at the end. You can still spend time between waves to gather resources and fortify your position, but you aren’t concerned with taking down an enemy base.

Many RTS fans may be asking how multiplayer will work in this type of experience, and while it doesn’t sound like you’ll be squaring off against your friends, Conan: Unconquered features a cooperative game mode that tasks you with defending your base against even more challenging enemy forces.

Conan: Unconquered is being published by Funcom and is slated to release later this year on PC.

Dota 2’s Latest Update Introduces A New Hero

The newest addition to the ever-swelling Dota 2 roster, follow up Grimstroke from August 2018, is Mars, the god of war. He storms into battle with a shield and his deadly spear.

Mars can throw the spear and stick characters to the environment or use his shield to bash and stun enemies. How he will shake up the game’s routine is yet to be seen, but as with every new addition to the line-up, time will tell how effective he is.

The game was released in 2013, so it’s always nice to see the support for the game hasn’t waned since then. You can read our review for the game from when it launched or read about how well the Dota 2 mod, Dota Auto Chess is doing.

Take Some Time Off In April For The Release Of Vacation Simulator

Publisher: Owlchemy Labs
Developer: Owlchemy Labs
Release:
Rating: Rating Pending
Platform: PlayStation VR, PC

After a brief announcement at The Game Awards in 2017, Vacation Simulator, the follow-up to the hugely popular Job Simulator, has finally got a release date and a slew of new information. For those of you tired of waiting for this vacation, it’s not far off. The game is releasing in just over a month on SteamVR and Oculus for $29.99 and the PSVR version is coming sometime this summer.

Along with the news of when you can immerse yourself in the simulation, the developers, Owlchemy Labs, also released a trailer showcasing the different locales you’ll get to lounge around in on Vacation Island: the beach, forest, mountain, and resort.

Click here to watch embedded media

In the year 2060, the robots have built this simulation to better understand what humans do when they aren’t working. To that end, Vacation Island comes equipped with plenty to see and do. Owlchemy gave a run down of what to expect:

  • Experience Vacation Island, your destination for optimal relaxation and/or efficient memory-making!
  • Customize a virtual YOU for picture-perfect selfies!
  • Wave to interact with a colorful cast of Bots!
  • Enjoy RECREATION beyond the theoretical limit in immersion-inspiring destinations!
  • Splash in the silicon sea and bask in simulated sunlight, all without getting sand in your… hands!
  • Get lost connecting with your roots, nodes, and branches… then get actually lost on a hike!
  • Elevate your ice-sculpting skills to new heights and reach peak cozy by knitting mittens for a snowhuman!
  • Exist in a comfortable, all-inclusive VR experience — free of motion sickness AND seasickness

The game is nearly out, but it’s nice to see that the game looks to be retaining some of the signature charm that Job Simulator was known for. While you wait, check out our review of Job Simulator to see what we thought.

Untitled Goose Game Has Been Delayed

The Untitled Goose Game from developer House House just slipped from its early 2019 release window. The window wasn’t given a more concrete time frame to replace it. House House just says the game is coming “later 2019.”

https://twitter.com/house_house_/status/1098311593371197440

Untitled Goose Game looks to be a fun indie game that has you playing as said goose and causing trouble for people by stealing their things or generally being an obnoxious goose. Little details were given as to why the game is missing its target other than “circumstances beyond our control.” The developers promise in the tweet announcing this that it will only serve as cause to make an even better game in the end, so we’ll just have to wait and see when the game comes out later in 2019 for Switch, PC, and Mac.

You can read our preview of the game here as well or see what other indie games we’re looking forward to this year.

Why You Should Pay Attention To The New Game From The Creator Of You Must Build A Boat

Publisher: EightyEight Games
Developer: EightyEight Games
Release: 2019
Platform: iOS, Android

Luca Redwood is responsible for the mobile hits 10000000 and You Must Build A Boat. Both are addictive, match-three games where players navigate perilous caves and dungeons, fighting skeletons and dragons by sliding rows and columns of items along a puzzle board. Redwood is now hard at work putting the finishing touches on Photographs, a new puzzle game, but this time the focus is story. Photographs is very different from Redwood’s previous projects, but no less engaging. We got a chance to play through a large portion of the game and came away with five reasons you should keep your eye on Photographs.

Unique Narrative Structure

While Photographs is a puzzle game, it ditches the match-three mechanics from Redwood’s previous two releases in favor of delivering a meatier story. Photographs is told over the course of five brief vignettes that follow different characters through traumatic or transformational points in their lives. The first story follows an Alchemist and his granddaughter and opens on them living a quiet life in their wooded home. The girl falls ill, and the Alchemist’s search for a cure becomes an all-consuming obsession. This sorrowful and tragic tone permeates the game’s other four stories to varying degrees.

Impressive Variety in Puzzle Design

Photographs explores five completely unique puzzle types. In The Alchemist, you control two players on a 5×5 grid. Both characters move together, so you must navigate them around various obstacles and traps until they slot into their respective goals. It’s easy enough to get stuck, so thankfully the game has a handy tool to rewind to any previous move you’ve made.

Click image thumbnails to view larger version

The puzzles themselves are tightly woven through the stories. For example, when the Alchemist’s granddaughter becomes sick from exposure to a poisonous weed, the game’s traditional sliding puzzles change so that players must navigate the girl around carefully placed weeds on the board.

A later story, The Athlete, follows a young girl who is forced to make difficult decisions to stay competitive as a diver. The early puzzles are straightforward; there is a dotted line shooting off your character and you have to adjust the angle of your launch so she’ll land in a pool of water. However, when things get dicey and more competitive in her story, you’re asked to make more complicated ricochet shots that require careful planning. When she still struggles to compete, that’s when her puzzles, and her story, get interesting.

Multiple Endings

The final game will have a host of different endings depending on choices you make. There are no real choices during the vignettes themselves, but after the five stories are over, you make a series of choices that dictates which ending you’ll see, and then you play through a short epilogue that ties things together. Based on what we played, Photographs does a great job at meshing narrative and game design. We look forward to seeing how the game can play out differently.

The Music

The soundtracks in 10000000 and You Must Build A Boat were fun and catchy, but ultimately forgettable. This time, Ben Prunty’s soundtrack is a standout element of the experience, and it brings a dreamy, atmospheric tone that will be familiar to anyone who has heard his work on FTL. I recommend keeping this game on your radar if for no other reason than to listen to some excellent music. I’d also encourage headphones if possible when the game eventually finds its way to mobile devices.

Excellent Pedigree

Photographs is structured quite differently from Luca Redwood’s past games with much more attention paid to fleshing out a collection of stories and characters, but at its core it’s still a puzzle game. Whereas Redwood was previously a one-man studio, there are now three people working on this game. It might not sound like a huge team, but with what we’ve seen from Photographs so far, the larger team really shows in the presentation.

Photographs will release for PC, iOS, and Android sometime in 2019. You can read what Luca Redwood had to say about Photographs when Kyle Hilliard interviewed him, and you can watch us play the game in an episode of New Gameplay Today.

What We Want From Pokémon On Switch

With Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee and Let’s Go, Pikachu out in the wild now, it’s time to look ahead at what to expect and – more importantly – what we want from the next proper Pokémon game on Switch. Several of Pokémon’s core features were wiped out or altered for the airier Let’s Go games, and while that fit the tone of those games, for the mainline series’ first foray onto a home console, we’d like to see something more substantial. Here is what we would like to see change for the upcoming eighth generation:

More Diversity in Wild Pokémon Encounters

Tired: Random battles
One of the more drastic changes in Let’s Go was ditching random encounters in favor of having the monsters physically spawn on the map. This meant you could choose to engage with them or not, so you could finally make it through Mt. Moon without being swarmed by Zubats. While this is a great change that we think should be maintained, we’d love to see Pokémon branch out and offer a greater variety of ways to initiate an encounter.

Desired: More creativity
Some of the best examples of this were in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Players often had to use every element of the Nintendo DS to find the adorable critters. The series has always utilized outside sources, such as trading, to evolve Pokémon, but the generation four games allowed players to insert older Pokémon games into the DS’s Game Boy Advance slot to improve encounter rates for Pokémon specific to those games. It was a wild feature that went almost completely unnoticed, and Nintendo eventually did away with that port in later iterations of the DS.

We would like to see more adventurous ways of using your Switch. Perhaps Game Freak could use the HD Rumble in the Joy-Cons, the touchscreen in handheld mode, or let you transfer Pokémon by storing them inside Amiibos. The Switch is a versatile machine, and we’d like to see Pokémon make you work to catch ‘em all.

Broaden Combat Abilities

Tweak the Challenge
Beyond making use of the Switch’s different physical features, we hope that battles with the more dangerous and mythical monsters involve greater forethought and planning. Stumbling onto a legendary Pokémon while exploring a cave is thrilling, but those battles often come down to simply needing a huge stock of Pokéballs.

Let’s Go Hunting
Pokémon could do well to learn from the Monster Hunter series. Those fights require a keen understanding of what you’ll be coming up against and demand that you adequately prepare for a tough encounter. If you stumble into an encounter in Monster Hunter without the proper armor or materials, you’ll be at a clear disadvantage. While we aren’t asking Pokémon to adopt the full-fledged 3D combat of Monster Hunter, we would like to see some smart and radical changes to the existing mechanics. Incorporating some light combat options outside of battle would go a long way to expanding the tools at the player’s disposal. Using traps on the field or taking advantage of the environment in some way could be an exciting twist. After 20 years of catching Pokémon, the standard routine has gotten a little stale.

Have Every Pokémon be Obtainable

Pair Up and Pare Down
Since the series’ inception, Pokémon games have always come in pairs. This meant Pokémon Blue players had exclusive access to Scyther and Red owners, Pinsir, and this encouraged trading between versions. So while we’re asking for every Pokémon to be obtainable in the game, it doesn’t mean that they should do away with that feature. Having two versions of the games has always felt exploitative, but it continues to be a useful way to foster a community around the games by forcing players to interact in order to fill their pockets with as many monsters as possible. At the very least, we would like to see some way to allow us to transfer our Pokémon from previous generations. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to suggest that the Pokémon Bank could expand its functionality to the Switch.

Legendary Chores
Instead, we want each and every Pokémon to be obtainable between the two versions. It’s fine to make you go outside of the game to earn your catch, but simply adding them to your Pokédex with a download code never quite scratches the same itch. Ultra rare Pokémon date back to the original games’ Mew, but considering how often this practice is done now, we just feel like we’re running errands.

Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire featured plenty of legendaries to catch, but they made you solve lengthy riddles and truly prove that you understood the game to even find some of them. The next Pokémon games will most likely push the total number of Pokémon over 900, and it would surely be a monumental task to put every critter in the game, but it would be nice if they were all obtainable between the two games for any trainers who are willing to track them down.

Open it Up

A Brave New World
Pokémon’s second-generation games were important for the franchise as they not only added a slew of new Pokémon and gyms, but they brought fans two years into the future and let them explore the entire region from the first generation as well. This meant that after eight gym badges and the Elite Four, players could go take on familiar faces and see what changed in the intervening years. It lent the world a fun continuity on top of its existing, deep well of content.

More Choice is a Good Thing
While we would love to see the game go for broke and allow you to visit all of the previous locales, if we’re being more practical, we’d like to see the game become more open-ended. A popular fan game based on Pokémon Crystal, called Pokémon Crystal Clear, took the core game and tweaked the layout enough to allow you to go to any of the game’s cities from the start. You were no longer held back by a lack of abilities to reach certain areas and could take on the game’s 16 gym leaders in any order. To accommodate this, enemies’ levels scaled to match the number of gym badges you have. So if you fought who would traditionally be the final gym leader first, their Pokémon are relatively frail, whereas the “first” gym leader might have an all new, powerful team if you fought them later on.

Change Up the Starters

Meet Your New Best Friend
Another exciting change made in Crystal Clear was the ability to choose more than the standard three starting Pokémon. In each game to date, players choose between a fire-, grass-, or water-type Pokémon. This serves as a simple introduction to Pokémon’s rock, paper, scissors-style combat system. Which starter Pokémon players choose is often an important moment for new players.

Battling the gym leader, Clair, with a non-traditional starter Pokémon, Tyrogue. Taken from a Pokémon fan game called Pokémon Crystal Clear.

Choose Wisely
Crystal Clear gives players access to not only the traditional starters, but also a whole host of other Pokémon that could spice up repeat playthroughs. While this exact idea would be compelling in the Switch version, we would at least like to see them shake things up and vary the types of Pokémon choose from at the start. We’ve chosen between the same three types in each game when there are other sets of types you could use to exemplify this concept to new players while also giving returning players something fresh. We would love to see a dark-, fighting-, and psychic-type batch of starter Pokémon for example.

Tone Down the Story

Keep it simple
The world-ending drama and lengthy cutscenes of more recent entries are fine, but this new entry would be well-served to focus the story more on the central characters personal journey rather than the exploits of some maniacal villain. Maybe you foil some nefarious plot, but making the issues as cataclysmic as they have been only needlessly complicates things.

What’s Old is New Again
Reining in the story would not only enhance the appeal of the core gameplay to a younger generation, but would help to bring in those of us who have been put off by the games’ Saturday-morning-cartoon vibe.

Let Us Snap Photos

It’s Been Too Long
If Nintendo won’t make an actual sequel to Pokémon Snap, the on-rails Pokémon game that tasked players with taking the best photographs of Pokémon, then they should incorporate its mechanics into the main series. We would like this new game to essentially serve, in part, as the successor to Pokémon Snap. Previous games have let you take photos at designated spots – Sun and Moon went as far as rating your pictures. But being tasked with capturing Pokémon on film in addition to in Pokéballs would help us relive the halcyon days of being heavily critiqued by famed photographer, Professor Oak.

Wonderful!
What made Pokémon Snap so special when it released on Nintendo 64, was that it made players feel like they were discovering these wild creatures themselves. It lent the world of Pokémon a magic that can often get drowned out with the sheer quantity of creatures to find now. By giving players the objective to photograph Pokémon, it allows us to really get to know each of them.

We’ve offered our suggestions, but there are countless other changes that could help deliver a unique Pokémon experience. Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments what you’d like to see when Pokémon hits the Switch, hopefully this year.

While you wait, check out what some of your favorite Pokémon almost looked like in some early design documents and then you can head here to see Game Freak’s Giga Wrecker Alt, which is coming to console’s sometime in 2019.
