Node.js 13, the latest version of the popular JavaScript runtime, was released this week, emphasizing worker threads, programming enhancements, and internationalization capabilities.

Node.js 13 replaces Node.js 12 as the “current” release but Node.js 12 remains the long-term support (LTS) release. Thus Node.js 13 is not recommended for production use. Nevertheless, Node.js 13 will be useful for building and testing the latest features. Developers can use Node.js 13 to ensure that their packages and applications will be compatible with future versions.

JSON, for JavaScript Object Notation, is a popular and lightweight data interchange format that has become ubiquitous on the web. JSON is known for being both easy for developers to use and easy for machines to parse and generate.

Not surprisingly, JSON has attracted the attention of tool builders, which have created a variety of tools for reformatting, validating, and parsing JSON. These range from online utilities you run in your web browser to plug-ins for code editors and IDEs such as Visual Studio Code and Eclipse.

More than 1,000 former employees of Sun Microsystems gathered near San Francisco International Airport recently to reminisce about the glory days. In attendance were all four founders of the company—Andreas Bechtolsheim, Vinod Khosla, Scott McNealy, and Bill Joy—who offered their perspectives on the technology business, past and present.

Sun Microsystems was one of the highest flying technology companies at the turn of the 21st century, challenging rivals like IBM and HP in enterprise data centers and producing a range of open source software technologies still popular today, including the Java programming language and the Jenkins CI/CD platform (originally called Hudson). Sun fell on hard times a decade ago and ended up being bought by Oracle, with the sale completed in early 2010.

Things are looking good these days for software industry workers, who are making more than twice the average annual wage of other workers, according to a research report released this week by Software.org: The BSA Foundation.

The average annual wage for software jobs in the US was $114,000 in 2019, more than double the $51,960 annual wage for all US workers in 2018. All told, the software industry directly employs 3.1 million people in the US—up 7.3 percent from 2016—and indirectly supports a total of 14.1 million jobs. Of the 3.1 million software industry jobs in the US, California led the way with 557,657 of those jobs, followed by Texas with 244,830 software industry jobs and Virginia with 188,939.

Oracle is positioning GraalVM, the company’s open source, polyglot virtual machine, as a substitute or replacement for Google’s Go (golang). Described as a “universal VM,” GraalVM can run applications written in JavaScript, Python, Ruby, C, and C++, and JVM languages including Java, Kotlin, and Scala. 

The Oracle developers behind the project say that GraalVM, like Go, offers fast startup and a small memory footprint. But with GraalVM, developers can still leverage the Java ecosystem. Further, these languages can be interoperable in the shared runtime, supporting the ability to pass a JavaScript object to Python, for example. GraalVM also offers ahead-of-time compilation for Java code.
