The Feds can crack any iPhone but Androids still give them trouble
Nobody makes a tool to hack the phones nobody cares about.
What you need to know
A government report details its capabilities in breaking phone encryption and acquiring data.
All iOS devices are effectively crackable.
Popular Android devices can be cracked but only select models.
While the FBI wages a court battle against phone manufacturers, our friends at Vice have found an interesting report from the Science and Technology branch of the Department of Homeland Security that shows the government is already quite capable of cracking your phone’s security. The most recent round of testing involved tools from security company Cellebrite, and many other companies offer cracking tools with similar records for success.
The good news is that the diversity of Android devices may be a saving grace in keeping the phone secure. While the government reports that nearly all iPhone models since the iPhone 4S can be broken into, the list of possible Android targets is a bit more hodge podge… 閱讀全文
Should you buy the Google Pixel 3 XL in 2019?
Best answer: The Pixel 3 XL has great hardware, easy-to-use software, and one of the best cameras of any smartphone available today, but its successor the Pixel 4 XL has better specs and a cleaner design, and the Pixel 3a XL offers most of the same features for considerably less money.
Better value: Google Pixel 3a XL ($430 at Amazon)
Top-end flagship: Google Pixel 4 XL ($780 at Amazon)
A great phone that can’t quite justify its price anymore
It should come as little surprise that Google makes a fantastic Android smartphone. The Pixel 3 XL went with the same proven formula, focusing on simplicity, speed, and useful features paired up with astonishing camera quality.
The software is far more appealing to use and experience than it is to read about.
The Pixel 3 XL can produce amazing photos in all types of conditions, from bright sunny days to dim indoor settings, all with a single rear camera. With a standalone image processor, the Pixel Visual Core, you can take multip… 閱讀全文

Progressive Web Apps might soon auto-start like regular desktop apps
PWAs are going to get a lot more like desktop apps.
What you need to know
Google is working on making Progressive Web Apps launch on startup.
A code change enabling this scenario was spotted in the Chromium code base this week.
The feature will work on all Chromium-powered browsers and is intended to enable communication scenarios where speed is a benefit.
Google is about to let Progressive Web Apps become a bit more like regular desktop apps in Chrome and other Chromium-powered browsers. As spotted by Chrome Story, Google’s added a new”Desktop PWA run on startup” feature flag to the Chromium codebase. This flag will let Progressive Web Apps load up even before Chrome is started by the user, acting just like their desktop counterparts do. For instance, Spotify and Slack can be configured to automatically load up on startup, and Google wants their PWA counterparts to have that feature too.
Progressive Web Apps are the future of computing. While the web was a slow starter, much … 閱讀全文

PC VR is far from dead, but it’s also more niche than ever
2019’s game and hardware sales have been good, but they reveal an interesting trend that no one expected.
If you’ve been around social media in any form over the past year, it’s likely you’ve heard of Beat Saber. The game is ubiquitous with virtual reality gaming, and for good reason. It recently became the first VR-only game to ever make it to the Steam top 100 best-selling games list. It’s streamed by thousands of gamers day in and out, in large part because a community of modders is constantly adding in new songs to the roster, like Toss a Coin to Your Witcher from the hit Netflix series.
Games like Beat Saber show that VR is bigger than it’s ever been. It’s on the minds of more gamers than ever, it’s talked about by more people than ever, and it’s being bought more than ever. But the surprising part is that it’s not the Valve Index, the HTC Vive Cosmos, the Oculus Rift S, SteamVR, or even Windows Mixed Reality that’s pushing VR to the next level and to more consumers. It’s not … 閱讀全文
Patapon 2 Remastered for PS4 review: Hard to find the rhythm
A flawed remaster of a solid rhythm classic.
It’s been nearly three years since the first Patapon Remastered was released on the PS4, and now the sequel has received the same treatment. In the second of three rhythm adventure titles, the Patapons have landed in a new country after being shipwrecked during their journey to Earthend. Familiar mechanics and music meet up with a host of new features, a longer story, and beautifully remastered 4K visuals.
But this remaster of Patapon 2 ignores some technical hurdles that modern games have to deal with. Despite the advantages that modern TVs and sound systems provide on the quality side of the spectrum, they introduce rhythm-killing lag to the experience. Unfortunately, Patapon 2 Remastered’s developers seem to have forgotten this inconvenient fact. Regardless of the quality of the rest of the remaster, this one fact will completely kill the very core gameplay mechanics on many people’s living room setups.
Thankfully, there’s an easy fi… 閱讀全文
