AOC Announces Time and Partial Lineup For Among Us Stream

Despite releasing in 2018, InnerSloth’s Among Us became an Internet phenomenon in recent months as many people are still staying home due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Among Us had three million concurrent players in September, and has been a hit on sites like YouTube and Twitch. Now, New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is gearing up to be the next big Among Us streamer on Twitch.

Yesterday, the Democrat member of the U.S. House of Representatives took to Twitter asking if anyone wanted to play Among Us as a way to encourage people to vote. America is in the midst of a Presidential election primarily between incumbent President Donald J. Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden that officially takes place on November 3, though early voting is currently open in many states.

AOC received responses from a number of Internet personalities, and Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. However, as of this afternoon she only confirmed that Imane “Pokimane” Anys, who recently returned to Twitch, and Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker will be part of the stream at 9:00 p.m. ET tonight. Omar confirmed she will be participating in a separate Tweet, but the remaining individuals who will fill the 10-player Among Us‘ group are currently unclear.

A major goal for the stream, besides watching members of Congress duke it out in psychological warfare with Internet personalities, is to “help folks make a voting plan” through iwillvote.com, a service provided by the Democratic National Committee that also checks voter registration. Given Among Us is a social deduction game that encourages players to keep their activities private between meetings to decide who might be an Imposter, there will likely be a lot of time to discuss the impending election.

The Congresswoman from New York’s 14th District has quickly risen to fame as an outwardly progressive politician who is active online, particularly through social media, keeping in touch with her constituents. This upcoming Among Us stream is not the only video game-related venture she has taken part in, as last year she appeared in YouTuber Harry “Hbomberguy” Brewis’ Donkey Kong 64 stream raising money for Mermaids, a UK transgender charity.

That a major political function is going to be held through the game is just one sign of Among Us‘ escalating popularity. Its developers were originally planning to release a sequel, but instead decided to buff up the current game with new content. New features like anonymous voting are being beta tested for Among Us, and it seems the game will only become more ubiquitous as it grows.

Among Us is available now on Mobile and PC.
