As the next-gen release for NBA 2K21 draws near, NBA 2K Gameplay Director Mike Wang has been sharing new features for the the game through a Courtside Report blog. The first report focused on next-gen passing, shooting, dribbling mechanics, and included a gameplay trailer, while the second report detailed player movement, player interaction, and next-gen controller mechanics. Now, in the latest report, the focus turns to MyPlayer features.
NBA 2K21 has revealed substantial changes to MyPlayer creation for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The community’s feedback has apparently been heard, and as a result MyPlayer pie chart builds will not be in the next-gen version. Instead, fans will be able to tweak each individual rating to a certain cap that depend on vitals like height, weight, and wingspan.
One of the biggest changes players will notice is with badges. NBA 2K21 on next-gen consoles will introduce new badges, and some old ones have been removed. Notable additions include Circus Threes, Sniper, Bullet Passer, and Ankle Braces. The Circus Threes increases ability on pull-up and step back three’s, Sniper increases shooting ability when using Pro Stick aiming, Bullet Passer gives ability to throw fast passes, and Ankle Braces makes less ankle breakers happen.
Another big change is the expansion of Takeovers. Instead of the eight basic takeovers available in the current-gen version, there will be 24 more specific Takeovers on next-gen consoles. For example, the Glass Cleaner Takeover granted better box-outs, better rebounding, and the ability to see where missed shots are going. Now for next-gen NBA 2K21, there are separate Takeovers specifically for box-outs, rebounding, and shot-reading. Takeovers also will have a multi-tier system, meaning players can equip more than one Takeover.
Much like previous NBA 2K games, in-game performance will fill the Takeover meter. Now, players can fill the meter and activate the primary Takeover, or wait to activate the double Takeover. Meanwhile, a tier above that unlocks the Team Takeover, which grants Takeovers to every teammate and gives full team control in MyPlayer mode. In honor the late Kobe Bryant, upon earning all badge points, players will receive the Mamba Mentality badge that allows them to change Takeovers from game to game.
Wang also breaks down the improved AI and play calling mechanics for next-gen. The AI’s ability to read screens has supposedly improved, and double teaming has been altered so players will respond to help defense more. Play calling has also been modified to give players more control over screens and favorite plays. Based on all the added features and improved mechanics, NBA 2K21 on next-gen may feel like a completely refreshed and different game.
NBA 2K21 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One. It releases November 10 for Xbox Series X and November 12 for PlayStation 5.
