Pokemon Sword and Shield Discounted at Amazon and Best Buy

People who haven’t bought a copy of Pokemon Sword or Shield yet, or who want another copy for friends or family, are getting some good news from both Amazon and Best Buy. Both games are $20 off from these vendors just a day before the Crown Tundra DLC releases for Sword and Shield.

Neither Pokemon Sword or Shield have seen a price drop this high in the entire time that they’ve been available, so this may be the opportunity people were waiting for if they were turned off by the $60 price tag. Although $40 is still a lot of money in many people’s minds to be spending on a video game, it’s a pretty good deal given current gaming price trends, and Sword and Shield are not likely to be this inexpensive for awhile.

This sale is great timing, as many Pokemon players are excited about the release of the Crown Tundra DLC tomorrow. The DLC will take players to the titular frozen setting and get access both to new interactions with NPCs and some returning Pokemon that haven’t been seen yet in Sword and Shield. Since Pokemon Sword and Shield are the first main games in the series to not include every Pokemon, many people are relying on DLC to fill their Pokedexes in this gen.

It’s interesting that players didn’t see a similarly large sale when the first Sword and Shield DLC, Isle of Armor, released this summer. It’s possible that retailers wanted to wait until a second DLC released to tempt players, now that people can know what to expect from a DLC thanks to Isle of Armor reviews.

While some people buy video games the second they’re released due to the anticipation and build-up of hype, other people prefer to wait for reviews or to wait even longer for a sale. In that last case, this sale is the first time Sword and Shield have been available for this low, and another sale like this may not happen for a while. And although Pokemon Sword and Shield sales have been impressive, this sale is likely to rake in some extra numbers from those more cautious buyers, in addition to the sales Nintendo is likely to make off of Crown Tundra tomorrow and in the following days and weeks.

There’s a lot in Pokemon’s Crown Tundra to look forward to, but there are also some things some fans are worried about, like how the Crown Tundra lore will fit into the larger Pokemon canon. Either way, if people do end up purchasing a discounted copy of Sword or Shield from Amazon or Best Buy today, they’re not obligated to purchase Crown Tundra, especially if the reviews aren’t great.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available now for Nintendo Switch.
