Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a ‘Coming of Age Story’ | Game Rant

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is set to be one of the foremost exclusive titles during the launch window of the next generation of gaming systems. Miles Morales is headed to both PS4 and PS5, and it is attempting to shake things up in both terms of gameplay and narrative. In a recent interview, the creative director of the game spoke up regarding some interesting tidbits of the story of the upcoming action-adventure.

Many know who Miles is in the Spider-Man universe. The character’s pop-culture breakout came with the extremely well-received Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. One of the key aspects of the film was the coming of age story for Miles, and with Spider-Man: Miles Morales, this will be the case again.

Brian Horton is the creative director of Miles Morales. In his recent interview with Game Informer, he highlighted a moment when Miles sort of “arrives” in the game, and how the story is indeed a coming of age tale. While Peter Parker and Miles are fighting Rhino, Peter is knocked down, and seemingly at the end of his strength, while Rhino has him on the ropes. This forces Miles to step up and protect his mentor, and in doing so, bioelectricity surges through his body and he punches the villain with amazing power. This moment, according to Horton, changes the trajectory of him being Spider-Man.

Horton says that the game is filled with emotional moments that force Miles to change and grow. In the game, Peter will leave for a time, while still staying in contact from afar, and he entrusts the city to Miles. This is where the new Spider-Man comes into his own, and this is what Spider-Man: Miles Morales is about.

Horton talks about other aspects of this moment with Miles taking down Rhino. There are scientific aspects of the bioelectric surge that fascinate both Miles and Peter. However, for now, Miles has to look into the matter himself, as Peter is leaving the city for a time. Communication between Miles and Peter will happen via text conversations, but also with challenges that Peter has spread throughout the city.

With Peter gone, Miles feels the weight of responsibility on his shoulders, according to Horton. After a year of training with the true “Spider-Man,” the training wheels are now off and Miles truly becomes his own Spider-Man. Miles now has to deal with the characters and villains of Miles Morales without being able to lean on Peter. This is where his opportunity for growth lies.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales releases November 12 on PS4 and PS5.
