When official merch doesn’t emerge, it’s often fan creators who bring elements of their favorite video games into the real world. Two blacksmiths who also happen to be big Among Us fans showed the world what the signature knife of the Among Us‘ astronaut imposter would look like in real life.
Among Us has seen a recent surge in popularity due to its simple Mafia-like setup and social nature at a time when many people have fewer opportunities to socialize. The game has an easy-to-recognize art style, and the animation is not that complex. There are a few basic kill animations that randomly fire if an imposter hits a crewmate, from snapping their neck to stabbing them with a jagged knife. Of course, all are cartoony in nature, and the gore is not that realistic at all.
Blacksmiths Matt Stagmer and Ilya Alekseyev run a blacksmithing shop and YouTube channel called That Works featuring the creations they make, like the sword belonging to Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings and the Lothric Knight Sword from Dark Souls 3. Many of the weapons they craft come from movies or video games, and the Imposter Knife is no exception. The video walks through the process that went into creating this unique weapon, including the addition of a pattern that added tiny Imposters on the blade.
The blacksmith Alekseyev uses Damascus steel, and shows off the various processes of forging a blade in the video, like hammering the metal and refolding it until the desired number of layers are achieved. It’s a fascinating look into the process of smithing and how much work goes into the finished product, which the Among Us imposter uses among various techniques to try to win the game.
The video is very informative even for those not interested in blacksmithing as a trade, as it’s interesting to many people to see how cool stuff gets made. The blacksmiths made a bunch of jokes about which of them was more likely to be the imposter in a game of Among Us, and at the end of the day, they had a very cool finished product: a huge steel knife with jagged teeth like players can see in the kill animation.
Among Us players don’t get to wield this actual knife when playing the game, which some may see as a shame given how awesome the final product will no doubt be to many. However, it is nice to know that getting killed by one’s friend in Among Us won’t be as painful as it looks like getting hit with Stagmer and Alekseyev’s knife would be.
Among Us is out now on PC and mobile devices.
