Borderlands 3 Showcases Zane’s New ‘Professional’ Skill Tree

Borderlands 3 Vault Hunter Zane is one of the more popular playable characters in terms of personality, with the drunken Irish bounty hunter often getting laughs out of fans. The Borderlands 3 Operative is about to get some new skills to match his sharp wit as well, with a powerful shoulder cannon on the way for Zane.

Zane and his three companions will each be getting a new skill tree as part of the second season pass for Borderlands 3. The Designer’s Cut pack includes a new game mode along with the skill trees, all of which are set to arrive on November 10. While the second pack of DLC content is set to arrive next year, the additional trees should keep players busy discovering new builds for some time.

Zane’s newest skill tree has potential, and if the latest GameSpot preview on the “Professional” set of skills is anything to go by, Gearbox is certainly helping the skill tree live up to the hype. Zane’s new action skill will allow him to equip a “MNTIS Shoulder Cannon,” a special weapon that does powerful concussive damage and stuns enemies. The cannon can be “fired quickly” by players, with each shot consuming one of three charges. When upgraded, the MNTIS will gain additional charges to allow players more uses of the ability.

This new action skill should help make Zane viable in Borderlands 3’s upcoming Arms Race game mode, with the Operative’s additional abilities helping to improve the cannon even further. “Colder Shoulder,” for example, makes Zane’s new shoulder cannon do Cryo damage at the cost of reduced damage. The skill also boosts Zane’s cryo freeze rate, a setup that is sure to make for some even more powerful cryo Zane builds. “Brain Drain,” on the other hand, makes Zane regain shoulder cannon charges whenever he gets a kill via a critical hit.

The “Wet Work” skill makes enemies explode into elemental puddles if killed by the cannon, dealing damage to the foes around them. “No Way Out” pulls enemies towards Zane if they are damaged by the MNTIS, while “Proliferation” deals increased damage based on the number of charges remaining for the cannon. The rest of the preview details Moze’s new skill tree, and with Fl4k and Amara seeing their skill trees detailed yesterday, Borderlands 3 fans now have an idea of what each vault hunter will be able to do when the Designer’s Cut arrives.

With the skill tree DLC still a few weeks out, though, fans will need to keep busy. For Borderlands 3 players with artistic talent, making some special pieces of Zane fan art with the new cannon attached to his shoulder could be a good way to pass the time until November 10.

Borderlands 3 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrades coming as the consoles launch.
