Every week, the Epic Games Store offers free games up for users to “purchase,” and this week’s offerings tie in well to the Halloween holiday right around the corner. Costume Quest 2 and Layers of Fear 2 are free, and they’re coming along to users alongside over a hundred games discounted for Epic’s Halloween sale.
With Halloween coming up so soon, many games and game devs are trying to get players in the mood for the spookiest time of the year in many parts of the world. They both come at the Halloween mood from different directions, as Layers of Fear 2 is first-person psychological horror, and Costume Quest 2 is a cartoony kids’ adventure game.
One of the most interesting parts of Halloween is how broad the spectrum of spookiness versus spine-chilling horror can be, and discounted Halloween-themed video games are common at this time of year. The rest of the Epic Games Store’s discounted games cater to a wide variety of tastes, and these two games are no different.
Layers of Fear 2 features the player as an actor who’s commanded by a mysterious voice to act in a film on a ship in the middle of the sea; thalassophobia, the fear of the sea, is a common fear that horror games love to play with. It’s very atmospheric and focused on exploration and storytelling, and has been called one of the best horror games closest to a haunted house experience.
Costume Quest 2, on the other hand, could be enjoyable for older players but is mostly aimed at kids, as is clear from its bright visuals and focus on children as the main characters. The game explores a dystopian world where Halloween and candy are both against the law, but the tone is very light as players take on the roles of Hallo-warriors, or kids who put on different costumes to give them the power to fight monsters. The Costume Quest games are great to get into the Halloween spirit, especially during a year when many people are unable to take their kids trick-or-treating.
If fans aren’t intrigued by these discounted Epic Games Store titles, the games will be cycled out in a week anyway, but people who do want these games should keep the time limit in mind. Fans have until October 29 at 8 AM PT to get these games, after which the free games that will be offered are Blair Witch and Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered. Both those titles are also very Halloween-themed, and will be available through November 5.
