Emoji license plates could be popping up across the U.S. soon, thanks to a new bill introduced in the Vermont House of Representatives.
The bill, which was proposed by Democrat Rebecca White last week, would enable drivers to personalize their license plates with one of six emojis. The cute faces would be added to the distinctive letter and number combination selected by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles or those picked by drivers themselves.

It’s unclear which emojis will be eligible for license plates, but it would add a fun touch to drivers’ vehicles across the nation. (Who wouldn’t want a tears of joy face, a bright flame, or thumbs up emoji on the back of their ride?)
Vermont would be the first state to allow emoji plates if the bill passes. Emoji plate legislation isn’t a new trend though: Last year, legislators in Queensland, Australia passed a new bill allowing drivers to add emojis (laughing, smiling, “love,” wink or sunglasses) to state-registered plates for a fee.

Until then, we can only express our feelings with emojis on smartphones and social media.
