The PlayStation 5 is now only a few weeks away from its official release, and with the console set to arrive soon, every detail imaginable is being released to the public. The newest PS5 info sees the machine being as heavy as it is big, with the console weighing twice as much as the PS4 Pro.
Unsurprisingly, it seems like the much-discussed size of the PS5 has translated to the console’s heaviness as well. With the PlayStation 5 confirmed to be so large due to the system’s cooling fan, players were given a better understanding as to why the newest Sony console is so big. Even with that in mind, though, the PS5’s weight could still shock some unsuspecting gamers.
Industry icon and The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley recently took to Twitter to share a video of the PS5 box (with the console included inside) being placed on a scale. The brief five second clip confirms that the console’s weight comes in at an impressive 14.7 pounds, making the newest PlayStation console the heaviest in PlayStation history. For comparison, the original “fat” PS3 weighed 11 pounds.
The more shocking comparison is between the PS5 and the current PlayStation console, the PS4 Pro. With the Pro only weighing 7.3 pounds, the PS5 doubles the weight of the previous Sony system. While this will have no real impact on players once the big new machine has been put in place, setting up the PS5 console and its many accessories could give eager fans quite the workout on launch day.
The PS5’s next-gen dust catchers and advanced cooling solution certainly came at a cost, as the cleaner and quieter console is truly massive. With both the PlayStation 5 teardown video and UI showcase demonstrating a speedy and powerful system, though, it seems like the tradeoff was more than worth it. While a few fans may take issue with the weight and length of the PS5, most fans will likely approve of the design decisions made to prioritize gameplay on the system.
Players may be needing some new furniture to support the long and heavy PS5, but Sony does not seem phased by this in the slightest. With the company having high expectations for PS5 sales, the 14.7-pound console will likely be seen entering many households around the busy holiday season.
The PlayStation 5 will be available November 12.
