Gears 5 Reveals Massive New Update Coming Later This Year

Ever since the Xbox Series X’s announcement, fans have been aware that the upgraded console would launch alongside an amped-up version of 2019’s highly acclaimed Gears 5. The game was, after all, one of Microsoft’s biggest exclusives of the generation, bringing Marcus Fenix, Kait Diaz, and Augustus Cole back to the screen with an ambitious and experimental new campaign.

Today, Microsoft revealed exactly what this Xbox Series X upgrade of Gears 5 would look like, revealing the game’s next-generation update, which arrives on November 10, will debut a bunch of new features. Included within the huge add-on is a New Game Plus mode, enhanced visuals, smoother frame rates, and way more Batista than fans might’ve expected, with the Coalition going into detail on everything it includes in an interview with IGN.

The first thing the update promises is technical optimization on the Xbox Series X, with Mike Rayner telling the publication how the changes will work. For one, players on both the Series X and Series S will be able to play Versus Mode at 120 FPS, while the studio has been improving latency to make multiplayer as smooth as possible. Meanwhile, cinematics now run at 60 FPS, standing as just one of the aspects The Coalition has worked on in its effort to add far more detail to the campaign’s visuals.

That’s not the campaign’s only notable addition, however, the biggest of which being the New Game Plus mode. Booting up the refreshed story mode gives players to option to restart Kait’s tale with all the upgrades for Jack as well as some notable extras. Players will now be able to assign character skins to Kait, Del, and JD as well as new weapon skins to their arsenals. Meanwhile, there will be fun mutators (such as big head mode) and two new difficulties. The first is Inconceivable, which as the name suggests, will be brutally hard, but the second mode, Ironman, presents an even tougher challenge, as players are tasked with beating the campaign with only one life.

The campaign will get one insane final addition, with players able to switch out Marcus Fenix for Dave Batista during the story. Not only will the ex-WWE turned Marvel Superhero feature as Fenix during the campaign – acting as a hilarious nod to his neverending drive to be cast as the character in Gears of War movie – but he’s also fully voiced. Overall, it looks to be a huge update with tons of fun new features and significant updates.

Gears 5 is out now on Xbox One, with its Series X / S update arriving on November 10.
