Fortnite: How to Detect Players as a Shadow | Game Rant

Halloween events are in full swing in many games, and Fortnite is no exception. Players are exploring new areas, battling the darkness, and eating Fortnite candy in droves.

Each of the latest challenges in Fortnite revolve in some way around shadows. A couple of these give bonus XP, and one of those gives players a specific task as a shadow. Players must detect other players as a shadow to better hunt them down like a true horror movie monster. Here’s a short guide on detecting as many players as possible while playing as a shadow.

The first thing players will have to do for this Fortnite challenge is become a shadow. This is nowhere near as complicated as some other challenges in Fortnite‘s immediate past. To become a shadow players must do one simple thing: die. Upon defeat, players will re-spawn and re-drop as a shadow, ready to hunt the still-living players. This occurs when defeated by anything, so players can easily access shadow-hood by simply running into the storm, enemy fire, or off a high ledge.

Shadows don’t play like regular Fortnite avatars do. They don’t use weapons or equipment and are focused exclusively on hunting the living. To do this, they have several unique powers all their own. These include their basic claw attack, leaping high, and dashing through solid objects. They can also possess regular Fortnite vehicles and run players over. In this case, the power that players want is Shriek, mapped to the R button on keyboard by default.

Shriek is what detects players. Using Shriek puts it on a cooldown and locates nearby players, highlighting them in red. This way they can be seen through walls and tracked easily. Each time a Shadow Shrieks, players will be highlighted again. It’s important for Shadow players to track others this way. Since they must rely on getting up close and personal to attack, surprise is of the essence. It’s a mechanic straight out of asymetric horror games like Dead by Daylight.

The challenge tasks players with detecting 10 players total, and it’s best to do them all at once. Shadow Midas’ lair, The Ruins, is swarmed with many players right now. Landing there, becoming a Shadow, and Shrieking will usually fulfill the challenge very fast. Players can get out there right now and hunt down others for revenge just like a real Fortnite Ghost Rider.

Fortnite is available on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
